Random Rants XXXIX: Coming up with a title is stressful

I had a customer storm out on me today calling me a thief. Her gripe? Her car that she bought new for $31,000 two years ago was, surprise surprise, not now worth $29,000 as a trade in.

I've heard some stupid stuff over the years, but her ridiculous expectation in conjunction with her over the top reaction places this encounter firmly in the hall of fame.

What was the actual value of the car after it had depreciated?

When valuing a trade-in I consider it's wholesale value, asking myself "How much can I convert your car into cash for tomorrow?", not "What may I possibly sell your car for on the yard over time?". We may elect to keep your trade-in and sell it on the used car lot or we may sell it to a wholesaler the day you collect your new car, but either way the customer gets the kind of price that one gets for a TV at a pawn shop.

Should I pay more than a trade-in is worth in order to sell you a car, this difference comes straight out of the profit. So if your car is worth 10k but I give you 12k , 2k comes out of the bottom line. Similarly, if it's worth 10k but you accept 9k , well that's an extra grand for me.

Sooooo.....in this case the ladies car was worth 18k. Far from exciting for the lady that bought it for 31k 2 years ago, and presenting trade in valuations is always the hardest part of my job. But this is not ripping her off, the simple fact is this is what the market commands for her car wholesale. The problem is, people expect retail prices when trading in their cars.

Luckily in this case I never got around to telling her this because she blew her stack when I suggested 29k may be unrealistic. When presented with 18k I dread to think what would have happened.

I was in the middle of typing up a long rant about how people should use "gay" in its original meaning, as the original meaning of words is always better, until I realized such a rant would be ********.

Let's look at the meaning of the word '********'…

You missed an apostrophe…

And right there you missed a full stop. Just sayin'… :mischief:

Sieg Heil! Heil Grammar!

I went to a Quiz night last night an the host for some reason thought this clip was from the Life of Brian. He just played the audio of it and just the tiny about him not being dead.

Link to video.

Thankfully he was able to look it up and correct it, after a few people, me included, complained that it was the Holy Grail and not the Life of Brian.

The forums is starting to become slow as molasses!

It has been a little laggy on and off the last couple hours.

EDIT: Okay, now it's really laggy.
Somehow, we were left with another blackout .

And the slowness comes back with a vengeance :shake:.

I was playing as England in RFC:E++, trying to take Amsterdam with a ridiculously promoted knight (without a Great General), while at a cold war with Austria. Suddenly, a wild Austrian pistolier appeared and killed my knight while about to take the city.

On another note, I've managed to get myself über-excited for prom (partly due to multiple secret plans about what will happen there) but it is over a month away. :(
