I was away from Australia for a month and got a bit of a shock seeing the low petrol prices when I returned too, even though I know what to expect 'cause it's the same where I was in Thailand too (not having lived in Thailand I didn't know the usual price of petrol there, but I was familiar with the Australian prices, and then there's the time gap, hence the shock)

The reason oil prices are so low is 'cause OPEC wants to make tar sands/fracking uneconomical.

So if you're concerned about the rise of unconventional oil (which is more destructive than conventional extraction), then it's actually kinda a mixed blessing.
