Random SG 01 - The Randomness Begins

Just PMed Gurra. Hopefully he'll give us a "Got it" soon

Hi! Sorry that I have been a little inactive (again...) but I'll read up on what has been going on and then I can play either tomorrow or Friday. :)

I will be out of pocket until Sunday afternoon. Please keep things going while I'm off the grid.

T200: Inherited turn, nothing for me to do here.

T201: I paid 1000 gold to ally Budapest, a militaristic city state bordering the Huns to the east. I thought they might be a great asset once we declare war. We got a whole 115 influence with them because they were looking for gold gifts.

Chemistry is researched and I move on to Economics since that is on the way to Scientific Theory. One of our Trebs is upgraded to a Cannon. Utique finishes a Caravel and they start on a Frigate.

IBT: Theodora enters the Industrial Era. Gustavus wants to buy Pearls for 3gpt but I say no to that price.

T202: Our Archer that is swimming around in the sea founds an ancient ruin out at Geneva island. 100 gold is collected and I use it to upgrade the second treb to a cannon. Gades finishes a Seaport and start building a Lighthouse.

We get to choose a policy and I go with Merchant Navy (+1 gold per Harbor/Seaport/Lighthouse and some culture+production bonus to East India Company). I thought of going for Rationalism opener first but since we most likely will be back in unhappiness when we capture cities, extra gold might be better in the long run. Our GPT went up from 83 to 105.

T203: Frigate done in Utique, they start on a Cannon.

T204: My turn log here is empty so I guess nothing happened.

IBT: Budapest gives us a Samurai! Not sure how useful they are in the late Renaissance because I don't play with or against Japan much.

T205: Since the Samurai spawned right outside Ankara, I sent them out in the sea to rebuild a Fishing Boat on the Pearls resource. Samurais aren't consumed when they improve sea resources, right?

And now: my big mistake. Every turn I thought "I must switch Carthage's production when they're 1 turn away from finishing Oxford because we want a later tech", but OF COURSE I forgot to do that... so Oxford finished here and now on turn 205.

Which of these free techs do we want? Architecture is on the way to Scientific Theory, but Fertilizer might be nice too. Although food might not be that necessary if we go unhappy after taking some cities.
Spoiler :

My vote for Fertilizer: it's an out-of-the-way, expensive yet valuable tech. It'll boost growth, thus research and everything else in between.

Samurai for sea resources is fan-tas-tic [party] Had my doubts about 1000g on a CS but with that sammy, it's a heck of a deal.

Agree with a Fertilizer, in our position it will be a huge growth boost.

When I play as Japan I always forget to try improvement with samurai, so let's try-)

T205: I go with Fertilizer for our free tech and we enter the Industrial Era. We get a new spy who goes to Attila's Court. Carthage starts training a Musketman. Gades and Hippo Regius finishes their projects and both start building Markets for more money and to make the East India Company available. I thought this might be beneficial since I adopted the Merchant Navy policy, which gives bonuses also to the EIC.

T206: Economics researched, and we start Architecture.

IBT: Attila wants to renew a deal for 5GPT in return for Wine. I declined since I initially thought I might declare on him next turn but it turned out to go a little longer than so before that happens.

T207: It's time for the World Congress and I put our delegate to vote for the Natural Heritage sites resolution we proposed earlier.

T208: Natural Heritage Sites failed, but Sweden's proposal to ban Silk passes. That doesn't matter much to us right now though since neither we or any of our city states have Silk. I re-proposed Natural Heritage Sites since I didn't see any better resolutions.

Cannon finished in Utique, and they start on a Privateer.
Musketman finished in Carthage, and they start on a Zoo.
Market finished in Hippo Regius, and they start on a Work Boat to improve their unimproved Fish. I know the Samurai could do it but the WB took just 1 turn.

T209: Our spy tells us Attila is plotting against Ethiopia. I share this information with Haile since we have no reason to dislike each other as long as he doesn't liberate his capital.

Work Boat done in Hippo Regius, and they start on another Cannon.

T210: Our spy steals Industrialization in Constantinople! It was the only tech they had that we didn't so there wasn't much of a choice. A Market is built in Gades and I left it open what to build there next.

I think we are in a good position to start this war against Attila. A cannon and a musketman is being shipped over the bay but they are both protected by Privateers.

Looking good, Fertilizer + Industry is a nice quick bonus for everything. We'll need the save to move on and play spot-the-coal now ;)

Since we went further down policy trees that aren't rationalism, I'd like to see if we can't speed up our wars - Sweden has a lot of people, a lot of research and they will most likely stay ahead of us on tech. The more we can do with frigates, the better, and that lends itself to haste before planes and artillery hit the deck.

Also, keep in mind that range upgrades can be unlocked after only 2 promotions in a same tree, so it's a very fast, very powerful boost to get. They just need to see some action.

I'm back. Excellent set up Gurra.

Looks like Eric gets to start the war. Sit back and let Attila come at us. Maybe move that crossbow away from the frontier with the Huns. Go for complete kills as frequently as possible.

I just sent Eric a PM so hopefully he'll show up soon. Let's give him another 24 hours. If he doesn't show, then our new teammate can bring out the :hammer: :D
What's with the Christmas smilies?

According to his profile, Eric visited CFC this morning so I'm sure he saw the PM. We're going to put Eric on permanent skip until he checks in again.

Beorn gets to start the :hammer:

May the force be with you! :scan:

Tomorrow it is. What a shame, I start a war  :mischief:

Guys, I'm a damned fool.

I was writing my turnlog in the in-game browser, on a reply window, and I closed the game.

Crap. :hammer2:

So here's a whole bunch of screenshots and the best summary I can tie up alongside them.

Plan:
Spoiler :
Start a war, send a settler to coal and spies to CSs that could turn the tie vs Sweden later on. Research towards Sci Theory then Oil.
etspRJj.jpg

3 coal tiles are visible, 2 in hostile environments.
zh8FeKW.jpg

Furthermore, both bad sources are only 2 coal each. Vancouver has a 5 coal tile, right outside its borders. We need to settle that.

Attila has a lot of units nearby but we have ranged units. All we need, really.

Action:

Western Front:
Addis Ababa is the first site to see action
ExyJL4I.jpg

and we swiftly capture a galleass there.
Spoiler :
We will end up capturing 4 out of 5 galleasses we attempt, and lose 2 of those 4 in the immediate AI's turn (for obvious reasons):

I get betrayed by the RNG :spear:

Turn 218: D-Day

bCwq1nF.jpg

Turn 219: Will lose a cannon to either a pike or city bombard. It turns out I can't just move-swap with an embarked unit so I'll have to take my chances and fire at the city. A shame, I even had reinforcements queued up, but it was too crammed to do it right. This mistake costs us 1 cannon.

The state of the city on turn 220:

Eastern Sea Front:

One,

and two,

and Jijiga goes down steadily
TLOUWvc.jpg

It comes equipped with Library, University, granary and workshop. THAT is a good deal.
tvwZixv.jpg

We get our first +1 range frigate
C2ubW7e.jpg

But Attila also gets his first one
w8xnbsh.jpg

T219 is the only time when the frigate was within range, but we were badly tied up east and out of (safe) capture range with privateers. That's 1 risk i regret not taking.
4useVjE.jpg

T220: Steal a galleass from under his nose, but it'll die.
7TsjHuK.jpg

Notice the +1 range frigate is doing some work on the city already.

Diplomacy:
Spoiler :

Sweden has more delegates than the rest of the world combined so I try and get a few cookie points with him:
1tYIFeZ.jpg

I hand Sully his missionary back
8Xh4Zgk.jpg

But there's no pleasing him
ZOdoAfk.jpg

Attila ends up offering the moon, but I want all the other stars as well. No deal just yet.
ephKmSN.jpg

I also sell a bunch of horses and luxes for gpt. There is no iron to be bought so we are at a loss for iron. Frigates are much less effective, which slowed down the southern war.

Homefront
Spoiler :
We swap great works to gain 2 tourism before the war.
a4D4GDc.jpg

Queue up a settler in Utique. He'll go grab the coal, it's free so far.

We find Columbo
3fzXMEG.jpg

Which puts us at 14 active CS.

A few goodies:
9k9puzg.jpg

xFyrXHa.jpg

After-action: I locked a bunch of tiles during my set, mostly to take advantage of a golden age and the unmanned artists' guild in Carthage.

We need to claim some iron for Frigates to come back to full force. There is none to be bought. I held off on upgrading the Samurai because we had sea improvements to make, but it is the next logical step as it will release 1 iron.

Our settler is still a few turns away from getting the coal.
6GTksPf.jpg

But we are just about to hit Public Schools:
ZzC9pba.jpg

I built a bunch of banks and privateers in my turnset. That cash should help us get right on top of factories ASAP.

So what ever happened to the Great General that was next to Addis Adaba's ivory? I thought we were going to steal that lux with a citadel upon declaring war? I guess not. :crazyeye:

Good progress on the war.

What do we want to research next? Knowing where the oil is would be most helpful. Having artillery might also be a good idea, but I do like the +1 range frigates.

What happened to our iron? I don't understand why we don't have enough. Can we get some from a city state?

So what's the plan with the settler and stealing the coal? Settle at six and then build a citadel just to the south? Is that what I am seeing?

Great screenshots by the way. :goodjob:

I don't think you can complain about the RNG. Your privateers had a field day. Capturing that many galleasses was great luck.

I don't think the war will last another complete turn set. Beorn you accomplished, or set up for accomplishing all of our objectives. The Ethiopian capital will soon be ours. The Hun ground forces look like they are gassed. Attila's Court will be doable with iron.
