I just saw the trailer for the new Murder on the Orient Express film. I can't work out whether the many.people in the comments asking if this was a remake of a film or if it was a new version of Cluedo etc., were trolling or genuinely had never heard of one of the most famous murder mysteries yet.

Poe's Law in operation!

I found a bunch of Cluedo episodes on YouTube. I'd never heard of that series before, so I was pleased to find that Season 3's Professor Plum was played by Tom Baker. Apparently Mollie Sugden played Mrs. Peacock in another season, so I'll have to check that out. I loved her in Are You Being Served?.

It's certainly better than manual power, as that doesn't actually cool you down.

You have not seen me sitting here at the computer, waving an envelope, catalogue, or crossword puzzle book in front of myself. It's been horribly hot and muggy this week, but we finally got some rain tonight.

Manual fanning is better than nothing. And the trick is that you have to put some effort into it.

Well, it makes you feel cooler, certainly, but you're also expending a great deal of energy to generate that cooling force, which generally makes you feel hot and bothered after you stop. Thermodynamics is a @#$%!

Uh-huh, whatever. I work with what I've got. My apartment faces southwest, so the next few months are going to be miserable. Yes, the nice, cool feeling stops when my arm gets tired, but it's better than nothing.

Have you considered putting some window screen over the fan so the cat can't reach in?

If I can find a fan that doesn't have such large openings, I won't need to worry about that.

I guess I could always move to Antarctica. If I wore black and white, maybe the penguins wouldn't notice me too much. This time of year, they're busy trying to keep their eggs and chicks warm.

Put on a 17th-century plague doctor costume and you'll be warm and snug. The penguins will be your friends.

Beak air-full though, otherwise you may gag.

Yeah, rookeries are smelly places.

They'd notice me anyway. I may be relatively short for an adult human, but I'm still taller than any penguin.

You can be the penguin that teaches all the other penguins that diversity is okay.

So I'm late to this cooling the office party, but the observation that a portable AC doesn't work is true. AC units are heat movers that also generate heat. It will blow more heat out the back than it removes from the air it is blowing out the front. However, the office AC that doesn't adequately cool is still most likely drying the air pretty well. In a low humidity environment a swamp cooler (colloquial name) can be very effective. I have a portable unit that works really well and only requires a refill every few hours, Or you can go with the "poor man" version by wetting an appropriate size towel, wringing it out, and hanging it over a fan. That lasts about twenty minutes, usually.
