Rant: Rap

And i think your cute too ;)

Let me refute your points

You can't paint rap in one broad stroke. Someone who listens to G-Unit (gangster) won't like The Roots (conscious), while someone who listens to Talib Kweli (conscious) won't like Snoop Dogg (gangster). Rap is lyric and rhythm. To sya it doesn't have rhythm is truly idiotic. The reason a lot of rappers rap about sex, drugs, and violence is because it sells. And smoking weed is a part of life in the ghetto where a lot of rappers grew up. Conscious rap raps about politics, real life, usually pro black stuff. Gangsta rap is about guns, drugs, and women. And yeah, I smoke weed, but it's not because of rap, it's because of the environment I live in and the choices I decide to make. I know a lot of people who listen to rap and don't smoke. A friend of mine is top 50 in his class and listens to gangsta rap exclusively. You can't generalize people, it makes you look like a moron.

Rbis, you have just gone up in my estimations :)

Quoting from page 4.

No flaws!? Are you mad? Saying that rap "poisons people's minds and that people who don't listen to it are better off is certainly flawed. As there is not a shred of proof to back such bold assertions.

That is my perspective. A perspective doesn't have flaws.

I have lots of names, I was born in Mexico.

...

Say that again, I used to hate hip-hop and rap untill I gave the good ones that Trajan and others showed me a chance. Now I no longer hate hip-hop and rap. So tell me again that you cant correct someone else's perspective.

No one can change my perspective, sorry :(

Ok, D can you see the difference between "Gangsta" Rap and Rap in general?

Yes, I can. Gangsta Rap: Yo yo yo wassup ma *insert n bomb here*. And they sing about rivalry etc, guns, narcotics.

Regular rap is just about regular things, such as women.

Why do people enjoy listening to rap? I mean, most of the times, it is about insulting other people, and making everything turn into slang. For example, Enimem, he "raps" about how he hates women.

Another thing about rap, how can people like the sound of it? There is no beat at all to it. 90% of children now listen to rap, which ruins their mind. Whenever I become friends with someone, I make sure they do not listen to rap, and they are overall much better people.

This just proves rap poisons the mind. It encourages drugs and alcohol, which gets you in accidents and much trouble.

That was my rant, thank you for reading :)

Also, post your views on Rap as well.

Well rap has a huge underground following and industry. It started that way so having a limited exposure to a few mainstream artists won't give you very much information and your definately showing a supreme lack of info on the subject. A lot of disputes have occured in the rap industry and community because artists who are different criticizing the others. But that wouldn't happen if the genre didn't allow the freedom to do so.

I do enjoy rap but not as much as I used to. The quality has gone downhill because of commercialization an I'm preoccupied by other genres. I don't blame anyone who doesn't like it but a lot of your statements are very ignorant. A lot of people like to cry because others have different taste then them but its ignorant to say that people are bad etc just because their taste differs. People from many different walks of life listen to rap.

People enjoy listening to rap for many reasons. The beats are rythmic and hard hitting or smooth, many of the lyricists are skilled even if you don't like the content. The expression is very free. There is no beat at all? That statement makes very little sense. The beats are more rythmic then most genres. Unlplug your speakers and watch the signal while the music plays and you can easily confirm that because the samples and loops are timed with precision. But then again you probably don't have the exposure to make that kind of statement in the first place.

A lot of people listen to music as an outlet. Sometimes that involves expressing negative thoughts. Sometimes it involves just wanting some form of free expression. Not everyone has the same morals as you and some people just don't want to think about them when they listen to music. A lot of people drink alcohol so a lot of people can relate to an artist when they sing about it. There should be no mystery. Its just a raw form of expression that doesn't apeal to you.

Slang - its not necessarily a bad thing. In the end your argument boils down to intolerance and whinning because people are different from you.

Please point out where I was whining. Also, read the rest of the thread. Specifically page 4 and 3.

Perspectives are transient.. yours forms currently because of the "wanabee" prats at your school and thats fair enough. Every action you take however changes your perspective.. it definitly changes form as you grow up. By that i dont mean your immature.. a persons perspective doesnt stop changing til they die.

Address his points, don't point us to your one-liners that only demonstrate your ignorance of the genre.

With this I can agree on. When I was around 7, I didn't care about rap, now I can't stand listening to it. Probably will change when I get older however.

It's no use. I think he's given up. There are quite a few excellent rebuttals, why start a thread introducing an opinion and not defend it? Seems rather pointless to me.

How old are you? You said rap poisons minds and leads to drug and alcohol abuse, but you also mentioned you are drunk. If you are under 21, something must be poisoning your mind.

problem is its a generally flawed opinion... and those few others that hate rap (we have had this thread a few times before) arnt here to lend their support to his side currently.. 1 against many isnt going to last long

The drunk part was a lie.. unsure why he said that... as his title says he is 12.

Gangsta Rap is the reason rap has such a bad reputaion. It is just a beat in the background with some black guy talking fast about sex, drugs, violence, etc over the top of it.

Non gansta rap is generally ok though, although (depending on the song) a little duller than other music.
