There was a public competition in the late 80s ending in the early 90s to select the lead design, so it was known about pretty soon after conception.

Sorry for the misunderstanding guys. That's not what I meant. What I meant was the new jets are ones we don't know about. The F-22 has been known for a long time, and is really not "new". I'm sure we are testing these unknown new jets, and perhaps even flying them in a few missions, who knows. But we as the public don't know about them.

The F-22 is our newest declassified jet, but that doesn't mean it's our newest jet The military has stuff that can only be described as "sci fi", but as far as we know it's not in use yet.
