Hey could anyone create a real modern europe with about 18 civs. I know that all the civs exist out there and there are some great huge europe maps as well. It would be great to see one with fair balanced starting positions for all the moden powers. England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Modern Italy and Greece, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Netherlands, Hungary.... I leave it up to you really, I just dont know how to put my own civs into a pre-made map.

Ciao:rolleyes:

I'm thinking about making a map kind of like this as just a nice, easy, quick scenario to give me a break from my intense Chinese Civil War scenario. I'd love to start work on this, but I don't plan on doing things like changing the game around. What I'd do is make a map with preplaced cities with most civilizations starting in the beginning of the modern era. Tell me what you think! Here's the civilizations I think I'll include:

1. Great Britain (Scotland is not a seperate country :shake: )
2. Ireland
3. France
4. Germany
5. Spain
6. Portugal
7. Italy
8. Norway
9. Sweden
10. Finland
11. Denmark
12. Russia
13. Poland
14. Ukraine
15. Belarus
16. Greece
17. Romainia
18. Hungary

For starters, "Yugoslavia" does not exist.

Well, I do plan on making the scenario. I have found a great small map that will run perfectly on all computers and is very accurate. However, It is missing some northern Europe so I will switch Finland and Norway with Turkey and North Africa.

I like your style serf. I saw a couple of great europe maps by artemisarrow and uncopain on this site in the maps list. They still are missing much of Scandinavia, what is that all about. Anyway, they are big, bigger is better in terms of realism. A bit more to handle but good for adding cities. Your civ list is solid however i might switch one for the dutch. belarus maybe. I know they are small, but so influential in european history. i only thought of yugoslavia in order to balance things out geographically.
I am very intersted in a modern scenario but also a start from scratch ancient era. I can fix that up in the worldbuilder though.
Ciao

Then add Albania, because they had much more impact on Europe than Yugoslavia ;)

The people have been around since ancient times, and provided a successful rebellion against the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century. Yugoslavia was a short-lived "conglomeration" of different ethnicities that eventually collapsed.

Check out my Ethnic Albania thread in my profile, download the mod, and read the civilopedia entry for Albania to learn about some of the key elements of it's history... then decide if you'de like to add them or not.

:)

i so wish people could make european maps with scandinavia included, who can deny the influence of the vikings. Even Iceland could provide a late game colonial opportunity as it is full of resources. Oh well sweden will have to do. They were a major naval power at one time, just not colonial. Hmmm could have been a different North America if they were.

Anyway, when can we expect the map Serf, im anxious.

I really dont think you should exclude Scandanavia. Make it a European civilization map only without the middle east and North Afica if you have to, but you have to include Finland, Norway and Sweden. It just makes Northern Europe a much more fun place, which is importannt to me as I always play as Germany.

Im no Modder but I think accurate map making is awful hard to do. I agree it would be great to see a european map with scandinavia in full but it seems none of the map makers thought the same. North Africa is also critical and played a big role in European history. Egypt, Carthage, Ottomans, etc. I think its also critical to have a Black Sea to Mediteranian connection.

How big do you want the map? I have the perfect reference map for this project. I can make the basic map but will need help with resource and CIV placement and such.

Reference Map

Or I can use this one which is not as detailed but is it's actual size in pixels making it 145x145 and has N. Africa and the Middle East.

Maps Trying to get in Scandnvia and N. africa are going to be very squarish which is going to mean more plots so it might be a bit much for most people computers. If I try to make it mush "smaller" then we come into the area being to small for the CIV's.

as big as possible, the idea is to capture realism, so more room for different, important cities. Thats my opinion anyway. Im not much for the tiny world scenarios.

if you have 18 civs, even the smallest civs will need at least 3 or 4 cities. If you think it will be too squarish, try adding turkey, russia and some of the middle east. You will know better than me though

if scandinavia is a bit cut off, maybe thats ok. It will encourage the civ/civs there to invade other countries. (like the vikings did) Just make sure to leave a bit of overland access to russia. ie. dont make scandinavia an island

Well when I said how big did you want it I was asking for Dimensions has I can take the reference map and make basically any "size" map you want. As big as possible is going to different for different people depending on their computers. Right now I am looking at 145x145 or so though I can also make one a little smaller like 120 or so.

It is going to be square-ish unless take most of N. Africa out or included all of the middle east. I have another Map we can use as reference that covers all of europe/scandavia/n. africa and middle east. Check it out here......

Let me know which one you like the best.

Is Iceland than not gonna be in it or a part of Denmark or Norway? YOU GOTTA HAVE SCANDINAVIA AT LEAST. You could have Sweden-Finland as the same country and Denmark-Norway-Iceland as the same, I don't really care. But what about the Benelux countries? Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourgh? Are they part of France or Germany, and Austria and Switzerland, are they France or Germany? But with Yugoslavia, you could have them include all the former Yugoslav republics (Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, FYROM, Slovenia and Bosnia/Herzegovina) if the Benelux's are a part of some other country. But you can call it FYRs, Former Yugoslav Republics. Uuuhh.. and one last thing. Will Czech Republic and Slovakia be Poland or Germany, or even Hungary? This is a difficult choice with all those countries. Perhaps it should be made in around the year 1925, after the WWI and Germany in agony. Then we would have:
1. Great Britain (Ireland and Scotland included)
2. France (+Switzerland)
3. Spain
4. Portugal
5. Germany
6. Austro-Hungarian Empire, well.. didn't they collapse in 1920 or some? Well, that doesn't matter, does it?
7. Checkoslovakia, they were made after the collapse of Austia-Hungary.. this kinda messed up. But still let's have 'em.
8. Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Kakasus countries, if you're going that far east)
9. Poland (+Koningsberg)
10. Greece (+Cyprus)
11. Moldavia (+Romania, wasn't it Moldavia, not Romania at that time, the name of the empire.. Well if you don't like it, you can say Romania (+Moldavia) )
12. Danish Kingdom (+ Iceland (and Norway, or Sweden) )
13. Swedish Kingdom (+ Finland (and Norway, or Denmark) )
14. Benelux's (Holland, Belgium and Luxembourgh)
15. Yugoslavia, didn't they excist by than? (+Albania)
16. Ottoman/Turkey

Well, that added the Benelux's and Checkoslovakia and still reduced the number of empires. I don't know if you'll like it since the history in it isn't correct. My idea is an enormous map, even bigger than huge, and push Iceland a little bit east and than it well be as east as Portugal (no-one would notice). My idea of the map is it goes as south as Gibraltar, Sicily and Cyprus, but no souther. In the east it will go to Cyprus and up there through Turkey and you would still have the Crim peninsula and than through Russia all the way to Murmansk and the Arctic line goes all the way west towards Iceland and that's as west as it'll go. Than you all the way south right north of Madeira islands and than again east, right south of Gibraltar and than we have a square and a good map. Don't you think we could just ..skip the Algerian plateaus and the North coast of Africa. Well I thank you and I hope you understood me and with my geography.. and know what I'm saying. I like the idea by the way :)

Anyone can make any scenario that they want. But, as I understand it, the name of this thread is "Modern Europe." That leads me to believe that billysheares wants "Modern Europe"ean nations. That's why Moldavia, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Yugoslavia won't work.

You have good ideas SkippyT, and I like your post (with the exception of saying "Yugoslavia + Albania"), but these factions are from different timelines, and some aren't even 'modern.'

Then again, anyone can make any mod/scenario that they want :)

Which Reference Map should I use, First one with only Cathage area of Africa showing.... second one which it not as detailed but is pretty much the actual size and shape of the map at 145x145 or the last one which covers the most area so in general the area per civ will be smaller?

I think that the first one of those maps is the closest to what we understand as "Europe". The bits of the mid-east and Africa are still visible, but I think that they can stay there.

And, yes, please include the Scandinavian countries. Even though the strong countries at the moment are UK, Germany and France, I think we should have them all in there. Additionally, the northern Europe (Scandinavia) is the most technologically developed part of Europe, anyway (internet connections / computers per household, online learning opportunities etc.)...
