Q:

Hello support team,

I am interested in purchasing Civ 5 Deluxe Edition. I see that Steam offers a pre-order bonus along with the Deluxe edition, which I thought was an exclusive edition of the game only available on Steam. However, Direct2Drive is also selling it and I assume they will give out a Steam activation key on the release date:

My question is, how does the pre-order bonus work? Do I need to order directly from Steam to be eligible for it or can I also pre-order with Direct2Drive as well?

A:
Hello XXXX,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

If D2D has the Deluxe edition listed, then you can purchase from either D2D or Steam and receive the pre-orders outlined on the store page.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

This is pretty awesome, I think. D2D is officially the best place to order from right now. I hope this wasn't a miscommunication or something, I thought I was pretty clear with my inquiry.

Damn! that's a good deal

I would assume it to be miscommunication.
You did not point out that the pre-order bonus of Steam (the map) is not contained in D2D's offer.
Most probably those guys have even not understood that the pre-order bonus is not bound to the Deluxe version.

I would suggest that you write again and clearly point out what is offered from which service and that you would like to get the pre-order bonus (the map) even in case of buying at D2D.

Yeah I just added another response to the ticket clarifying the situation.

EDIT: I'll update this thread when I get the response. I just noticed that the reply to the original question just said "pre-order" and not "pre-order bonus". Arrrgh.

You know, I think it doesnt come with an extra civ, Since they say 'FREE Premium DLC Get the first Double Civilization and Scenario Pack for FREE.' Double civilization and scenario pack. this could mean that it is double since you get both the civilization and the scenario!!

When you pre-order on D2D you will only get what they are advertising that you will get.
Nothing more, Nothing Less.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition
Pre-Order Sid Meier’s Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition and get the following bonuses*!!!!

Preorder bonuses:

Get Civilization III Complete for free when you pre-order Civilization V

FREE Premium DLC Get the first Double Civilization and Scenario Pack for FREE when available "*Availability currently set to late 2010. Date subject to change."

Bonus Babylon Civilization with leader "Nebuchadnezzar II"
Behind the Scenes at Firaxis with Civilization V video feature
Game Soundtrack

....

Currently this is the best deal out there for game content, you won't get the various maps that are offered as pre-order bonuses, but instead you get bablyon + a free 2 civ & map DLC + civ3 complete, + behind the scenes video + soundtrack. All for £40.00, a good deal indeed. How much better this deal is compared to Steams DE is how much you value civ3 complete at, and how much the premium DLC packs will cost.

In Steam's response to you, "the store page" refers to the store page of the store you order from. They are in no way confirming that if you order from D2D you get the stuff listed on the Steam page as well.

Yeah, sadly just a misunderstanding:

Hello XXXX, Thank you for clarifying. In this case, you would only be eligible for the pre-order items listed on D2D's site. The Steam items would only be given with the Steam purchase of the game.

My bad, folks

Wait, so D2D allows you to get the Babylon civ but not that associated map pack? This seems to go against the idea that leaders will be released in bundles that include a scenario or map.

2K Greg can you confirm whether DLC will take the form of individual civs, multiple civs per purchase (e.g. packs of 2 or 3), or civ/civs+map/scenario per purchase? Or perhaps all of the above?

Someone who wants the Mesopotamia map pack who bought the D2D pre-order will either want to buy it (the map pack) separately from Babylon or have to effectively pay twice for Babylon if civs are only purchasable in bundles that include maps/scenarios.

D2D instead of giving a map with a pre-order is giving civ3 complete + the first premium DLC pack.
A bit of a better deal in my opinion.

As for what will be in the DLC packs, 2kGreg did say somewhere that 2 civs + 1 map would be in the DLC packs.

Yes, but D2D is also giving Babylon. I would have assumed that Babylon would be part of a DLC bundle i.e. with a map. The unknown is whether the map can be delivered separately from the civ Babylon.

Bablyon is not DLC, it is just a deluxe addition bonus, it may eventually be encompassed into a DLC along with other bonuses given to other distributors, maybe thier will be a DLC offered quite cheaply including bablyon + cradle of civilisation + africa map + mesopotimia map, which I have seen in various versions for pre-order bonuses.

The map pack is the preorder bonus on steam. If you get the regular game, you get the map pack, if you get the deluxe you get the map pack also. It is not connected to Babylon. Seeing as the 1st Premium DLC announced was 2 civs and a scenario that is what I'd put my money on for being the dlc packs you can buy. Then they can sell map packs seperate. I could see the 2civs and scenario selling for $10, and depending on the quantity and quality of maps, they could sell for $5. So they will have a low price point for maps, and higher for the larger bundle of dlc.

Greg has confirmed that the DLC package that D2D will give you for free (but will be available to others for a fee) will be 2 civs and a scenario.

@Tylerryan79
The question is, do you really think Babylon will never be sold again after all preorders are finished?

Me, I doubt it. If Firaxis and 2K are already demonstrating they are prepared to bring in more revenue from DLC packs, I think it's reasonable to expect they won't waste an opportunity to earn more revenue from selling Babylon once Deluxe edition orderers have enjoyed their honey moon period of Babylon-exclusivity (e.g. maybe 2 months after release). Notice that 2K have not mentioned that Babylon will never be available again and are being deliberately vague about it. If Babylon really became impossible to ever obtain after release, they would almost certainly be making a strong point of telling us now so we all ordered the Deluxe edition right away.

Is it really that D2D will give 2 civs?
"Double" might mean "civ+scenario", "1+1"...
Maybe, or the D2D dde has 2 DLC civ + scenario packs and the first is for free when available and date is subject to change.
Available doesn't mean september 2010.

Also, noting is said about civilization + leaderhead.
Maybe, those civs are minor civilizations or you'll able to buy a leaderhead later when available.

Not to me. Civ3 actually de-values the whole pack.

Tatran, I think it is safe to assume that a civ will always include a leaderhead (or better described now as just "leader" since you can see their body too). Firaxis have made the point that civs and leaders for civ5 are basically one and the same. i.e. All civs have one leader and only one leader. It's a very unlikely scenario that a civ offered as part of a "premium" DLC pack will have no leader with it!
