We were researching Divine Right as Trader Bait, but, honestly, I'm not sure how many other nations are even willing to trade with us. Ragnar is a fairly significant tech lead at the moment, but nothing especially critical, save Engineering. He can field: Berserkers (Macemen), Catapults, Trebuchets, Crossbowmen, Longbowmen, Pikemen, Knights.

We can field all of the above except for Pikemen and Trebuchets. Finding a way to acquire Engineering would be wise, although Ragnar's army (as depicted in the last image) seems to be Infantry heavy, so it may not be desperate. Crossbowmen + Macemen would still be a good combination, plus a healthy dose of siege units (catapults).

In any case, yes, Ireland is not a major objective, and an immediate attack on them would be foolish, even if the Vikings were happy with us.

One other thing we should consider doing is sending out a cheap 2-move unit to explore more of the world, since our maps are woefully inadequate.

Now that the war and negotiations are over, I'll begin working on The Plan. I'll still need a few days, of course.

Edit: Great General settled in Birmingham (HE) is a good idea. I'll do some math to see whether Longbows or Crossbowmen would be better. Antium can be a troop producer, as well.

However, if we're not giving cities to the Vikings, we're not giving any more to Germany. Those cities are worth MUCH more to us if we control them than if we give them to our vassal. We can defend them ourselves.

If it comes down to it, we may have to beg Ragnar for 10 gold, and then give it back (or give him 10 gold and then ask for it back). This will force 10 turns of peace.

Right. Even if the Viking problem didn't exist, an attack on Ireland would still be in the very distant future.

Perhaps Cull the Great Spy, if he's still around?

I'd also like to know exactly why Ragnar's Furious (everything, not only including what just happened but all other modifiers). If he's mad about the loss of Viking soldiers, could we give him units to appease him?

No, we can't live without Cumae and Neo.

I'm kinda a bit angry that relations with Ragnar failed. LH, how do you expect us to get anywhere if you keep destroying our efforts to do anything?

EDIT: Speaking of exploration, have we found the New World with those three triremes I asked LH to send towards the northwest?

Settle the Great General in the Heroic Epic city and start spamming Protective Longbows with as many City Garrison promotions as they can get, NOW! This is Ragnar we're talking about, he's furious and we share borders. He has powerful allies who also hate us and our military is crap right now. We need Longbows, lots and lots and lots and lots of Longbows.
I strongly disagree. I mean, I do agree that we need to prepare some defensive forces, but we should NOT be spamming Longbows, much less ones promoted to City Garrison. Having to passively defend cities in Civ (i.e. wait for enemy units to attack your units fortified in your cities) is fundamentally disadvantageous for the defender. If we do that, Ragnar could either take all the time in the world battering down our defenses and then using collateral to take out our longbows, OR run around pillaging at will. The key to defense is collateral initiative, so if we are spamming anything, it should be Catapults (and units that are strong in the field to mop up after them, like Crossbows and Maces).

I can't remember if unit gifting gives diplo bonuses. I doubt it. And I wouldn't do it, either, since they'd probably be marching against us eventually... For now, we'll just send Ragnar missionaries.... Well, soon enough.

Edit: You're right about that, Spectrite, but Crossbowmen can still be used offensively (well, so can Longbowmen, if you use 'em right). But we certainly want at least one city on permanent Catapult duty.

I dont think it does.

Now then, we need catapults, lots of them. We need to build up the Royal Regiment of Artillery.

Did I ever say this would be easy? Did I? And Rome surrendered to occupation by England - Russia and Vikingdom have been BFFs FOREVER. I've been trying to convey that THEY AREN'T OUR FRIENDS for a while now. Besides, Egypt likes us.

Basically, Ragnar lost a lotta men at Cumae and thinks that the city is rightfully his. When Whosit rejected that, he went after the Balkans and suggested that the Germans be left alone with him and Peter. Whosit rejected that too. Ragnar also wanted all our scientific data and us but not him to abide by a DMZ in the Balkans and Germany.

Needless to say, Whosit didn't like that plan.

Basically, Russia and Vikingdom have been allies for a long time. Why should Ragnar like us after we basically hammered his best bud with the Eagles in the hostage breakout?

And relax all - there's plenty of nations in Asia and America to make enemies . . . err, allies of.

I pretty much figured that was your goal, LH. So, mission accomplished! :goodjob:

Yes, the British Dominion of Mexico, and another Dominion of Japan and 13 Colonies...

I just realized how imperialistic ive gotten...

Joiiiin ussssss.

But, in any case, we still have to meet these guys, hence one of the reasons to send out a scout, to see if there's anyone on our side of the world we've missed. Oh, and to find actual cities and whatnot.

I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get Rome's technologies, but all things considered, this worked out about as well as it could. aside from the fact that most of our army is German, but we can fix that
