[REQ] Mammoth and War Mammoth units

well if you feel like going crazy could you make an armored version? like this

img4627d61d186d5.jpg

Admirable, but that "puppy" is more the size of one of the larger sauropods than a mammoth!

Best,

Oz

PS/BTW sorry for "thread-diving" like this, but has anyone considered that the mastodon is actually a better choice? - attached are images of each, as well as a map of where the woolly mammoth trod.

-O.

What is the problem here , I gave Plotinus a Recommendation for an better model for a lighter working prozess.

H.Balck :king:of the:king:s

First you said my animation wasn't good enough and yours was better. Now you say my model isn't good enough and you think I should use a better one. This is not constructive criticism. Neither is it conducive to a "lighter working process" to tell someone to scrap everything they have done on a unit in order to use a different model instead. And I've always been well aware of that model anyway - just not prepared to pay for it.

If you really wanted to help, you would give tips about which model to use before someone started work on the unit. And instead of posting endless "previews" that never come to anything, you could always try making one yourself. If you're such a ":king:of the:king:s" perhaps you'd care to make your own mammoth unit and prove that you're better at it than me. Or at least post something about other people's work that isn't just insults, more or less thinly veiled.

Plot, go ahead, I'm willing to make you any other spare parts you might need, and please disregard any and all comments from Scandinavian mythological animals who use as their pseduonyms those of Teutonic war criminals from the 1939-1945 second global conflict. ;)

Considering that no one living today has ever seen a live mammoth, I would be happy to simply get a mammoth unit to use. I would like to have a Mammoth Cavalry Wonder, similar to the Statue of Zeus, which auto-produces Mammoth Cavalry units once the player has acquired the mammoth resource, which occurs only on tundra.

well im no scientist, but im not sure they should only be available in tundra, cold regions yes since they were fury animals, but its believed they went instinct due to a sudden climate change. Catastrophism followers go as far as believing the regions they inhabitted were once fertile, but some disaster caused a sudden pole shift, moving the north pole from north america to where it is now with a change of the earth's axis, if so, Siberia for instances was in the temperate zone then, while northern europe and america was further north in the frigid zone, europe wasnt very habitable north of the iberic peninsula, but due to a different earth axis (tilt), what is now east of europe was to the south-east then, so temperature was much better in places like the asian steppes, making them excellent grounds for large mammals.

Some of that is what im trying to represent in my mod, the Atlantean Chronicles, where the end if the ice age didnt happen exacly like it did, and Mammoths still exist by the time of the Sumerians, and so do the Atlanteans since the second event that caused the end of the ice age and rise of sea levels didnt take place. So im hoping to see a few different War Mammoth units, with flavors for Amerindian, Celt/Germanic and Asian civs :)

There were certainly lots of different kinds of mammoths, not all of which had shaggy hair or were found in cold climates. I'm making only woolly mammoths, for the sake of simplicity, but I am varying the hair length according to the (approximate) climate of the location.

Thats a great idea Plotinus, I would sugest the Amerindian flavored one to have longer hair, followed by the Celtic/Germanic, and then Asian with shorter.

I dont know if you'll borrow skins from Sandris' units or make your own, if possible I would welcome 2 or 3 versions for the European civs, since the Sandris packs are a lot different for Europe, there are the Britons with black hair, Celts with red hair and germans/norse with blonde hair. But I suppose if the rider uses some sort of fur hat the difference wont be much noticeable and one unit can be used for all or most of the European civs.

Well, it's not a matter of skins - this isn't Civ IV - but of props and clothing (which might have different textures). But the human figures in these are minute - it certainly wouldn't be worth going through 16 hours of rendering plus all the hassle of doing the palettes, converting the renders into flics, and creating the pcxs just for a pixel or two of different hair colour.

You could make the hair the civ colour, and then let people have black for Briton, Red for Celts, and blonde for Germans/norse

Hmm, well, even if people were prepared to do that, you can't really have such a tiny spot of civ colour. It would blend with the surrounding colours and not be properly blue enough for the game to recognise it as civ colour at all. I suppose it might be an idea that could work for full-size human units though, at least in theory.

It would probably be easier to change its colours in Photoshop rather than in Poser and re-render. It is surprisingly difficult to get the texture and the hair looking right within Poser.

(In fact I did change it a little after putting up these previews. It looks better now than before, but you'll have to wait to see for yourselves.)
