RIP Kobe Bryant

I can see how she would get death threats - sports fans can be irrational, more so when it is their idol.
I haven't read about the rape issue at all.

Re media grief: if it is just the news people (sports news, etc), it mostly is just fake. Just cause Kobe was a top player doesn't mean that many media/show people had close contact with him. That said, if you are a sports media worker, you obviously do not want negative attention in such high-coverage stories, so faking it may be bad but the alternative can damage their career.

He was also really active in player development and mentoring, so a lot of the younger stars did know him personally, as do a number of the older players who played with and against him. At the Clippers for example, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George trained with him and spent time, and Lou Williams played with him in his last year, and Doc Rivers coached against him and met him during those big matchups. There's connections like that all over the league.

There's also likely to be an element of simple recognition of someone dying prematurely in a similar life to them. When Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes died after being struck in the head onfield, the outpouring of grief was very real right across the cricket world based not just on knowing him personally but also on the familiarity of his life and circumstances. Everyone had faced fast bowling, everyone knew it could have been them. A young recently retired NBA star dying with family and friends in a helicopter crash would have felt very real to everyone else in that world regardless of their direct connection.

This, for sure.

I also have had to realistically assess that Kobe Bryant might very well be the greatest sports icon in the history of Los Angeles, and is certainly head, shoulders, and more above anyone else in decades. The Lakers are playing their first game tonight, and the grief is like a palpable cloud over the entire city.

If I marry I will have it in writing that the marriage is open (how open will be between my wife & I, obviously not all things will be permitted),
Good luck with that. I wonder what the underlying reason for getting married would be. Money?

Old School old school that. Practically medieval.

He admitted to everything but the rape.

That actually strengthens the argument that no rape occurred. Rapists who try to deny it usually go with the "it was 100% consensual and she is lying about everything" defense.

He settled it out of court

And? This is not evidence of guilt as has already been established in this and other threads.

Well, at least some good may still come out of this, given that inevitably it showcases how fleeting life/fame are.
At any rate imo sportstars are dangerously idolised. Charles Barkley seems to do more good by -apparently- only offering jobs/scholarships in non sport-stuff: only a tiny minority can live by (eg) playing in the NBA (including bad role players :) )

How guilty does an NBA superstar assaulting a hotel worker have to be before the cops even take it seriously enough to prosecute?
She refused to testify which is why the case was dropped. Or at least that was the reason given. I am not really familiar with how well a prosecutor here could be expected to press a case with these circumstances without her testimony. Is it generally done in Australia?

I'm trying to thread this Kobe needle where it's like, okay, the uncritical admiration for the dude is annoying, but then all the SJWs are basically saying you're a rape apologist if you don't performatively exult over a man's death

I'd be interested in seeing examples of the latter, because even in my circles I haven't seen this (if I'm reading you right).

I've just seen it in the wild a couple of times on Facebook. I didn't mean to imply an equivalence between the two poles there. Kobe-worship appears much more prevalent.

All the buses and trains are running RIP KOBE in their digital signage still. Both of my uber drivers yesterday brought it up as well.

When they were mourning him on the morning news my wife said in a pretty neutral tone, "isnt that the guy who raped somebody? Now we're pretending he was awesome? Ok." That's about as feral as I've seen irl and she's no SJW.

I don't think many really think you're a rape apologist for liking him. That's pretty extreme. I just think people who aren't obsessed with basketball remember that scandal and are wierded out about the veneration.

Better to just forget him.

It's hard to know what would have happened considering she refused to testify.

Here is what I'm saying here:

In the case of Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, etc I always 100% knew they were guilty before it went to trial because too many different people that didn't personally know each other all had a similar story of what he did to them. It is virtually impossible for all of this to be a coicdence.

OTOH, Bryant was only accused of this once, and it is worth noting that she probably did benefit a lot from it, even by settling out of court she probably got a lot of money from him.

Even then I'm not saying I'm sure he was innocent and that she made it up. But the possibilty that he could be innocent is at least there unlike a lot of other of these cases for the reasons I'm explaining.
