Role Play Challenge: Suleiman the Magnificent and the Battle of the Philosphers

Gah. I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but very occasionally, when a city gets razed in Civ4, the whole game crashes on me. Had that happen last night while playing on this map. It blew me right into XP's blue screen of death :(

Thanks. I will try BUG. Anything special to install\running it? I rarely play BtS, today I am sick at home, avoiding work :), I wish I have time to play :(. I just read like 3 RPCs, you guys rock! I have learn more today than reading those Sis' 30+ pages per game.

Well, alot of my game I learned from Sis and his posted games, so consider mine mini-applications of his strategies. Thanks for reading the games!

I have to say that this and other series were also pretty instrumental to my improvement as a civ player (and still are). It wasn't that long ago that I was getting mauled repeatedly by the Chairman Mao RPC ;). It's much more fun to succeed! Although I also get some kind of sick pleasure from finding ways to stay within the rules that still make the game easier etc.. That does have some value in forcing out-of-the box thinking though. I even have something like this in mind for the Hammy game already! This series is very good for learning from that standpoint and I give you kudos for hosting so many for so long.

And at marathon speed too, he must be mad!

I only play marathon games for HOF and they take me at least a week.

I like mad's variants they show you that unconventional tactics at Monarch can still produce a win. And his speeling iz sumfink els.

I don't notice much variance in actual gameplay time from quick to normal to epic (maybe half an hour from normal to epic, and nothing from quick to normal). However, marathon is different. Most of my games clock around 4 hours, this one took me 6:41 :(. More than six hours! Jeez! Even if you click fast, 3x the turns of normal is kind of rough. Everything takes an eternity! Players are double encouraged to make units on marathon, not only are they cheaper relative to buildings than on other speeds, but they're the only things you get relatively quickly .

hmmm....

i'm playing a shadow of this also... it is going very well but it is slow going cause of marathon. however if i turn marathon off, the game becomes uncompetitive with other shadows etc.

Damn TMIM, that was one hell of a blitzkrieg! It makes me wanna download Mad's save and see if I can work some magic too .. maybe after my Freddie game.

*is going to follow this one*

Marathon speed makes the game much much easier. Jans have longer life and all units cost 33% less.

It's true, that is slow, but I bet we cant win the game at 15th century on normal speed

Hm... normal epic games on higher difficulty levels take about 15 to 20 hours for me. :crazyeye:

Magnificent Suleiman and the Battle of the Philosophers: Part II

The bloodshed has begun however the BulbS**ting has yet to materialize!

We start the segment my meeting

SulB0000.jpg

How you doing SB, time to sit arround and shoot the BULL a little bit.

Tecpath went: Hunting/Archery/HBR/IW/Math/Masonry and start construction. Yeah, everyone sees where I am going with this.

We settled our last city of the segment

SulB0001.jpg

But fear not, that is NOT our last city acquired during the segment.

Soon we see Sitting Bull's culture to our west indicating he is close.

SulB0002.jpg

Now we did not open borders for a while, and only then we opened borders with Al and Peter, the Hindu leaders. I am not planning on the Buddhists being arround too long.

And after teching IW we find

SulB0003.jpg

The lady has the only source of Iron. Guess that wraps ups where we go,

SulB0004.jpg

Note the HAs that we got from archery! I have certainly acquired a good appreciation for these guys! All flanking II, they typically wither won all battles or survived and the extra movement got them into a city for protection and healing as opposed to axes which often are succesptible to counter attacks the next round

We quickly subdue York

SulB0006.jpg

And head immediately to the area where I expect London to be

SulB0007.jpg

Notice that the iron was not mined yet indicating Liz did not have the tech yet.

So we have three English cities left, we simply go after the blue border ones.

SulB0008.jpg

SulB0010.jpg

Very nice to see those 2 gems. I should note we have access to ALOT of happy resources plus the Hamm UB meaning Monarchy and HR can probably be greatly delayed!

We find the last English city where Elizabeth is hiding awaiting for her hero to save her.

SulB0012.jpg

He never came!

One AI down!

So let's view the map

SulB0014.jpg

9 cities so far! we can easily settle two more to the south which should be self suffcicient. But then again I bet we can shoot the Bull with Sitting Bull once we get a nice healthy slew of pacaderm power!

A view of our cities.

SulB0015.jpg

We are building libraries and plan to run several scientists until all the cottaging can get our slider above 20%. Suleiman plans to break out the whip soon for that! Also noone has alphabet yet so we cannot see the tech situation.

A view items for discussion/decision

1) Techs after construction? I say Calendar/Currency/CoL, but in what order?

2) I think Sitting Bull should be hit hard and soon, well before he nabs Fuedalism. Once he is out we can sit back and consolidate out techrate.

3) DO we settle a few new cities now, or wait until the three economic techs?

Enough for tonight. Tomorrow will likely be the last segment posted until next as me and the misses are heading out of town for a nice retreat!

One final note: we did get 1 GG in the English war which we created a superhealer on a HA with.

1) Techs after construction? I say Calendar/Currency/CoL, but in what order?

I'm thinking CoL/Currency/Calendar. Make sure you whip Courthouses ASAP, but you already knew that. ;)

2) I think Sitting Bull should be hit hard and soon, well before he nabs Fuedalism. Once he is out we can sit back and consolidate out techrate.

As soon as your economy recovers. It shouldn't be that long with courthouses, maturing cottages, and calendar resources. But if he gets longbows, life will be hard.

3) DO we settle a few new cities now, or wait until the three economic techs?

Wait. 9 cities is enough in the BCs.

I'd go Currency first. I find it makes for a quicker recovery on the slider than CoL does, and the markets give you yet another happy boost, which is handy for whipping.

Once the economy is stable, I say beeline Gunpowder and go on a Jannissihad!

It's kind of rough offering trade advice without knowing what the AIs have. If you can win a race to alphabet get it! If someone has it by now, research what the AI's don't have first that way if they tech miserably you can still tech it, else trade for it.

COL is not that hot on monarch, currency might be nice though... Alphabet however will give you way more return than currency could(especially if you got it before killing off lizzy.

After much reading I decided to practice some. May I show my latest game, very low level :(, and even so, I get stuck, how do you figure out which victory to choose? how do you make AI friends(or enemies)? sorry if this is not the right time\place to upload but this is my save:

1) I would say currency/CoL/calendar. Currency for the fast boost of cash. Calendar as the last one since you already have phants/gems/gold for the :) After calendar make the cities grow like mad. You have spices, dye, sugar, bananas. This is awesome for fast growth and no limits.

2) You might consider prioritizing construction after the above mentioned 3 so you can hit Sitting bull indeed hard. Don't know if you can tech all this before he techs feudalism. But even then cats/HA/phants/axemen do a good job against heavily defended cities. My bad, you are already researching it :p

3) If you can get the deer-clam city online (with a lot of cottagable land) you will be sure that every city can grow >size 10 without getting into trouble. But I would wait a bit for Cur/CoL

Crazy good game so far but where are the darned GP???? I want to see some of those burned!!!

Well done, but expansion is not about the troops and winning wars, it is about the economy. You have 9 cities so courthouse are essential before you expand further. As you know city maintenance has 3 aspects, the distance from the palace, the number of cities and then the size of the city. Here all three conspire to make it very expensive to expand further before you've underpinned your economy. So it has to be CoL first and then build courthouses as a top priority. I even think you should switch research now before finishing construction.

I'd say the research path should be CoL, Currency, Construction, Calendar.

On second thought, I agree with UncleJJ. Get courthouses online while teching currency and the economic hole you are in, is gone. Then tech to calendar. Your cities will have the opportunity to grow first before you need the calender resources.
