RoM Latest Version

If someone could help me I'd appreciate it. I'm running RoM 2.81 mega on a Windows Vista 64 machine, dual core 3.0 and 4gb of ram. I have had an epic speed game going until January 2072, and I'm finally about to win. However, every time I end turn at this turn it just spins the globe around and never actually finishes the ai turn. It just says waiting, and takes up no cpu utilization. I've tried going to war, nuking people, reloading earlier saves, and it still does this.

I've spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to finish this game and would like to if someone can help.

Thanks

Are you letting Windows run your Video performance settings?

If you are, Windows will hog your Ram.

Right click My Computer select System Properties then the Advanced Tab. 1st section under Advanced is Performance settings click to open. Then Select Visual Effects tab(should be the 1st tab). Adjust for Best performance or Custom.
I have used both but have settled on Custom as there are only about 5 options you really need.
Then select Advanced tab and check paging size at bottom. I use 2046MB.

Above the Paging file size I have also selected in both sections: Programs.

If you change the Paging file size and select Programs be sure to click Apply at the bottom then Ok.

My Specs: (I use XP Pro 64bit with 8GB of 1066 DDR2 ram Dual Core E7400 Wolfshead chipset, ATI Radeon HD 4650 vid card with only 512MB of DDR3 ram.

I want to share my findings with you:

I know zappara prefers WinRAR, but I stumbled upon a great archiver called FreeArc by Bulat Ziganshin, which is free software, and in a lot of cases has a better compression ratio than WinRAR (and 7-Zip too), and has customizable recovery options (and SFX) too.

I recompressed the RoM megapack and the difference was 156 MB (!!!). That is a noticeable difference. (I did not use the recovery option but with as much as 56 MB of recovery data, the difference would be still 100 MB which is still remarkable IMO.)

- RiseOfMankind2.8Mega.rar is 935 MB (981 463 703 bytes)
- RiseOfMankind2.8Mega.arc is 779 MB (817 304 165 bytes)

Current version is v0.60, but it is pretty stable, i did not run into problems with it. You guys should check it out!

Have you also tried compressing with 7zip? If so, could you post the results for comparison?

RiseOfMankind2.8Mega.7z is 793 MB (831 747 067 bytes)

Compressed with 7-Zip 9.07 beta
Compression level: ultra
Compression method: LZMA
Dictionary size: 64 MB
Word size: 273
Solid block size: 4 GB

(The arc result in the previous post was achieved with maximum compression level and "fast, low memory decompression" option enabled (-m9x))

Yep, definitely seems that .rar archives don't get the levels of compression that .7z or .arc can.

Hello all!!! :D I heard great things about this mod ... although I may be a wee bit late on the cards ...

I'm itching to try out RoM but have a slight-ish problem (on my side ofcourse :P) Ya see, my connection isn't exactly the best in the world, so it's a colossal task for me to download ~1 GB of stuff (megapack :)).

So what I wanna ask is, whenever RoM2.9 gets out, will there be a 2.81->2.9 upgrade version or would I have to download everything again (which would make me cry)

If there's an upgrade path, I could download the 2.8Mega+2.81Megapatch and play until 2.9 gets out. In case there's no upgrade path, I could always wait for 2.9 :)

Thank you for the mod btw. From what I've read, it's gonna be a blast!!!

There is no upgrade path between large releases (2.81 -> 2.90), you will need to re-download. Don't bother waiting for RoM 2.9 though, 2.81 is still relatively new, it will be months, many months before 2.90 comes out.

Thank you Afforess :) I'll download the 2.8Mega+2.81Megapatch

See ya all within the week :p
I don't think there is any need to download the mega pack. Tell us what your specs are because you need a good computer to use it.

Oh?? I thought it depended on the size of the game you're playing (ya know, small map-> low spec, huge map -> high-powa!!! :D)

Anyway, this my system (kinda ancient, but I have fond memories with it :p)

XPHome SP3
Core2Duo E4600@2.4 G
2GB DDR2
nVidia 8500GT 512 MB DDR2 (with the latest drivers)
DirectX 9.0c (August 09)
Oh, and Civ v1.74+War v2.13+BtS v3.19

If this isn't enough, I'd love to know what to upgrade as a priority (just to have a lag/error-free game :p) Thank you for your concern

Edit: I see in your sig that the New Dawn modmod increases game speed, is it a performance increase or just the in-game speed? Will I need an even more powerful pc for New Dawn? :p

Oh, just stick with 2.8full or 2.8lite and patch it to 2.81. Don't bother with Megaciv. I am using megaciv but only because i have 3gb and have my aero features turned off.
Your system don't have what it takes to play with extra civs that is what megaciv is all about anyway.

A New Dawn makes the game run smoother and faster. If you can run RoM, you can Run AND, you don't need to have a good computer.

That's a shame then :( But it's a good thing too, cause I'd have completely flipped if I found that it didn't work AFTER I finished downloading it  Thank you for your help!

So, now with AND in the picture, how would this sound?

RoM2.8Full+RoM8.81Patch+AND1.54 (or greater if a new version gets released within the week ... <jingle bells> :D)

Thank you all for your help. Will probably be back after the Full finishes :p)

That would have been disheartening. I know how you feel, I had dial up a year ago... ugh.

RoM2.8Full+RoM8.81Patch+AND1.54

Close, try this:

RoM2.8Ffull+RoM2.81Patch+AND1.53+AND1.54Patch

A bit confusing, I realize, but it's just 2 mods and 2 patches. The order matters though.

I doubt a new AND will be released soon. I go through extensive beta testing before hand. And I like to give stable releases a time to cool off a bit, and give players time to actually finish a game or three.
(But AND 1.60 will be awesome, don't worry.)

Aye mate, good to know. And thanks again ... Your install order it is :)

Also, zappara, please consider Desolater's .arc/.7z idea for the next RoM, a 100 MB saved means an hour less of downloading for me :( and an hour less means that much less power used by the pc, save the environment ftw!!! :p

Screw the environment, it means playing RoM an hour sooner :)

Your welcome.:hatsoff: I have only had DSL internet for 3 months so I what dial up is like.

Is that an attempt at humour, Civking, or have you genuinely never heard of a dial-up connection?
