Romney blasted for using story of dead soldier

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio: The mother of a retired Navy SEAL killed in Libya blasted the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, for discussing her son's death on the campaign trail.

''I don't trust Romney. He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama,'' said Barbara Doherty, according to 7News in Boston.

Ms Doherty is the mother of Glen Doherty, who was killed during last month's attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. Twice on Tuesday and again on Wednesday morning, Mr Romney described meeting Mr Doherty.

The tale starts out as a self-deprecating story about how the Romneys inadvertently crashed a private party.

After the crowd chuckles at Mr Romney, he grows serious and describes one man he met at the party - Mr Doherty - and their shared interests, and how Mr Romney had just learnt he was among the Americans killed in Libya, and how he exemplifies the American nature.

''When they heard that the consulate was under attack, they went to the attack,'' he told rapt supporters gathered in a pump manufacturing factory in Ohio on Wednesday.

''They didn't hunker down and hide themselves. They went there. That's what Americans do, when there's a challenge, when there's a threat, we go there. When things are tough, we don't give up.''

A Seattle-area news site spoke with one of Mr Doherty's friends, who disputed the details of the encounter, saying that Mr Romney repeatedly introduced himself then apparently forgot

''He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half-hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognise Glen's face,'' Elf Ellefsen told mynorthwest.com.

He added that his friend was non-political and his appearance on the stump ''does make me sick. Glen would definitely not approve of it.''

The Romney campaign said the nominee would no longer tell the story of meeting Mr Doherty to respect his mother's wishes.

Boston television station WHDH posted the interview with Doherty’s mother today. But Romney re-told the story at a campaign stop just hours later in Ohio Tuesday night and again today in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

What exactly is "Presidential calibre"? Does it, in any way have to do with dignity of office? Or does it have to do with using your position of power and authority over 20 somethings for sexual favors in the oval office? Or is it laundering PRC money via Buddhist monks in California to campaign coffers so the ChiComs can influence our elections? Is that Presidential calibre?

I don't think Romney should be expected to run around asking the permission of everyone and the family members of everyone he's known or met if he can tell a story about them. That's just not reasonable. He didn't do anything wrong here.
