@Rex: I hope that you whipped the tank that I started in Chimpsopolis. If not, we'll probably lose it with the time jump (unless we end up in the Future!)

In general, if we find ourselves in an advanced era and one of our cities has almost completed either an advanced military unit or an advanced city improvement, we should probably whip it (if possible) before ending the turnset. It would be a shame to lose such units/improvements due to an "event".

I agree ~ that sounds like a good idea, even if we don't know if an event is coming or not...just whip/draft something in every city.

I did not. At the time, I didn't know that an event was coming. However, though, I honestly didn't even think about it. I knew we were only one turn away. I never whip units that are a short time in coming and I just never thought of it. Sorry.

@Pholk: 38 mothers provides the greatest genetic diversity. Cornelius would be a bad scientists if he used multiple mothers.
 
the first player (who is up?) whould whip the modern units / buildings on the first round (if possible). Sometimes the game doesn't notice that you cannot build something until the next round.

I was wondering about that, too. And wasn't it Pholk who was remarking on all of the monkey-related porn sites he'd found on the 'net? He even linked us to a site with 'Adventures of a Naughty Monkey' prominently featured, and, for that matter, a reference to 'spank' and 'monkey' right in the FAQ!

Pholk, we need to talk about this little 'obsession' of yours. You have to admit that you have a problem, or you'll never get better. ;)

(Apologies for the long wait and the short story - an explanation will follow)

INT - Cabinet Room - Day

Mr. Chimps is meeting with his council of advisors. All are seated at a long mahogany table, with the exception of Gen. Beast, standing at the far end.

CHIMPS: General Beast, I understand we've had another incident with one of your troops.

BEAST: I regret to admit it, sir, but yes.

CHIMPS: And who is the miscreant this time?

BEAST: (shuffles papers with his trunk) Mmmm...one Private Bobbo, sir. Deserted his post.

CHIMPS: Bobbo? Didn't he run off with Bubbles to that island up north?

GRAPE APE: Yes, sir. The tribunal....well, YOU, sir....let him off with a slap on the wrist. He was back on guard duty within the week.

CHIMPS: Well, not this time. Have we located him?

BEAST: Yes. It seems he took your order to shut down the pubs in the capital rather hard. He'd set up a still out in the jungle and was trying to ferment...bananas. (turns around and flicks a photo up onto the wall display).



CHIMPS: Twenty lashes, then send him to test site Alpha, too.

BEAST: Yes, sir. I...

Everyone blinks as a high-pitched humming sound begins. Lucy prods Cornelius, who has fallen asleep again.

CORNELIUS: What...I... (turns pale)

CHIMPS: Is that what I think it is?

The humming sound is dropping in pitch and growing louder.

CORNELIUS: Yes...the drive is firing again.

A sickly green light filters in through the blinds on the conference room window, then there is a bright flash, and everything goes dark.
 
Ok...sorry for the wait. It turns out that editing a game to go forward in time is easy. Going back, on the other hand....not so easy.

I'll go ahead and reveal that the latest Event has thrown our intrepid monkeys into the Classical Era, since it's too much of a pain to write this without giving that away. And you're gonna find out when you open the save, anyway.

Since I had a lot of freedom to tinker around without ruining the surprise for anyone actually playing, I took the opportunity to settle a few questions about game behavior, which I'd like to share. You'll see why.

First off, I discovered that the game designers did NOT intend for anyone to do what I'm doing. For instance - the World Builder has an easy built-in way to add all techs from a given era, but you have to remove 'em one at a time. Giant pain in the tuckus.

But if that were all, I'd have been done much earlier. It turns out that the game deals well with SOME aspects of a time-jump, but not others:
  • Chimpsopolis is building a Tank (267 of 270 hammers :cringe:). When the next player hits Enter, the game will correctly inform him that he can't keep building the Tank, and he'll have to switch to something else. Same with the Infantry, etc.
  • Research is a different story. It'll let you keep researching Rocketry (it would take just over 11,000 turns, BTW) as long as you don't manually switch away. Why does this matter? Because the AI is NOT bright enough to switch away from Plastics in 800 turns to something useful, like Iron Working. Since that would essentially kill the AIs progress forever, I fixed it and forced all teams (including you guys) to pick new research. Details on request, but it took about four tries to figure it all out.
  • It's not clear what happens to workers who are chopping Jungle when Iron Working goes away. I forgot to check, but I didn't have to reassign jobs to 'em, so...
  • Turns out that adding Satellites in World Builder reveals all tiles on the map, even if you take it away immediately (before exiting WB). Word to the wise...don't misclick.
  • The game doesn't force you to exit civics you're running, even if you've 'lost' the tech for them. Use this knowledge as you see fit.
  • The game also doesn't force the culture slider to zero, even though the slider itself is now gone. :eek:

    Notice that gold is at 0%, research at 80%, no culture slider. And you still have two happies from culture. You can lower the slider to zero by running either of the others up to 100%, but you won't be able to raise it again until you get the tech back. Again, use this as you see fit.
  • In case anyone was wondering, you do lose access to up-tech resources, even though you have the improvement in place. Note that the capital no longer has Iron.

Not a good thing to try. I once did that after having my only source of iron pillaged. I whipped my sword and next turn it told me I had to build something else and I got no production overflow from the whip or invested hammers :mad:. You may get them back next time you can build a tank :confused:.

So remember to whip all your warriors before the end of your turn because if Quantum Monkey in Chief Zophos transports you to the Future Era, you can't build warriors :crazyeye:.

Though, looking back, I guess it's a question of who posts first. So...was that a 'got it' or not?

Wonder what will happen if I whip the tank right before I hit enter ... will I get a tank, or will I just waste a pop for 27 hammer overflow?

I didn't test whipping, per se, but I suspect you lose the pop as Oz suggested. Basically, the :whipped: just increases the number of hammers you have invested in the item that you won't get to finish.
