Most Muslims I know aren't going to have a problem with the bacon 200 feet away in Aisle 6 if they're just dropping in to pick up some pita and lamb. Why would that be an issue?

what a pointless fuss, think you can get halal meat pretty much everywhere here and the usual nutters have moaned but retailers havent cared, and our local supermarket always has banners wishing people a happy whatever religious festival/holiday is going on

As far as I know, the only difference between Halal and Kosher is Halal requires that the animal be facing Mecca when it is slaughtered, whereas Kosher has no such requirement (for obvious reasons).

Am I wrong about this?

I remember reading an article in Time magazine around 2 years ago about the spread of multinational food corporations into Middle Eastern markets, and how they were catering to their customers with halal/kosher food resulting in large rises in profits.

There is no problem with this; actually I would encourage this, as this increases the profits of supermarket chains and (I would think) makes Muslims feel more integral to the community.

Why do you think halal-style animal slaughter is barbaric? From what little I know of it, it isn't any worse then what goes on in most large scale slaughterhouses.

There have been studies done on it.. I forget the details, but essentially the animal can go through a lot of pain. And yeah, I'm against any sort of inhumane (inanimane?) slaughter of animals. Kill them so they feel the least amount of pain.
