Scn: A planet like Earth is discovered...

This is a scenario and I will throw new events at you and Edit them into the OP while posting them in the thread stream as well, if this scn becomes popular. You may be assigned a nation if you choose one however trolling will result in your being overthrown and replaced by a better leader. (Someone else) Others can become officers on the ships once launched and deal with problems as they come up. I'll make up rules too as we go along, as I see fit. I'll try to keep it interesting, but I have the final word. PM me any advice and if you don't have one of the countries, I might listen to it. You will get credit for that event if it appears in the thread.

Its 10 light years away. Atmosphere is roughly like ours but without the pollutants. Its a new planet for humanity! A miracle! Liquid water, atmospheric signs of life, its centered in the goldilocks zone. Thing is, some estimates place the cost of a single ship such as the Russia-China team are building, well in excess of a trillion dollars.

China and Russia team up and announce they will go. Together they will build a Generation ship. There is no such things as cryo sleep.

Question to our math whizzes, how long would such a ship take?

China will supply most of the money, Russia most of the science and engineering, China most of the labor, Russia most of the on site engineers. The ship will have nuclear propulsion, both countries withdraw from the test ban treaty.

Together they plan to bring a quarter million people, a huge ship able to feed itself, farms, cattle, insects, all the variety of Earth excepting species not helpful to humanity. (No mosquitoes or komodo dragons) Nuclear power plants, huge grow light artificial sun, the works.

You are one of the leaders of the free world, do you try to form a team of nations to go?

The planet is discovered, China and Russia make a joint announcement. Pick a country, state your interest and commitment. Trying to go it alone might crash your economy and cause your nation to drop out of the effort.

I would want the US to join the race. I would work to have Japan and Germany as major partners. Lesser partners could join, but their contingents on board would be smaller. I would also negotiate with the Russians and Chinese to split the two "crews" so half of each was on each ship. this might reduce the animosity upon landing and give each side an interest in the others success.

I didn't just discover a planet like Earth: I actually discovered Earth itself. And I did it at an incredibly early age.

(To be frank, Earth doesn't taste all that great. And it was, incidentally, one of my very first discoveries.)

Its not realistic. First of all an entire planet like Earth is out there. Maybe the combined effort of this planet could put less than a million people on that planet. There is no realistic reason to cause the deaths of billions and ruin this planet over it.

Perhaps this forum won't be interested in playing this out, seems to be going nowhere so far and that's okay.

Fill it with flippant posts if that's what you folks prefer.

The point is to enjoy a scenario. Imagine if humanity discovered another Earth, out there just waiting, or developing along its own path. We now have the technology to create a spaceship that has the same ability as our planet, the ability to sustain a large group of people, being born and dying off on the journey. So here folks take nations, develop plans, create ships, and take them to a new world. Might be fun. The question is are the folks interested? Whatever entertainment relief this site offers us from the real world means different things to different people. I enjoy making jabs and jokes, discussing the topics of the day and such, but in thinking about it doing something different might be interesting for a change.

Do you consider that another forum on this site would have the activity to sustain such a discussion, should it actually get going? It might not be worth the time I've put into it to begin with, seriously beginning to doubt it, but if it is I'd dislike it being moved somewhere to die of lack of traffic simply because it might belong there.

Canada and Sweden. We'd have the best ice hockey players in the universe. Perhaps a mix of Israelites, Germans and Japanese also to get some intel, production and science going and get that planetary shield up as soon as possible.

From your list I would choose the US without Israel. If Israel must be paired with the US, then I will choose Japan.
