Search function

Surely the Google search is independant of CFC so it doesn't matter whether search is enabled here.

Not sure if this is possible, but are there ways to limit searches.

Examples:
You can only search a single forum.
You can only search the subject line
A limited number of searches per person.
A limit on the number of searches going on at simultaneously. Some message like "the search queue is full try again later".

I know very little about forum underpinnings, so I am probably stating something obvious. But just in case....

Limited functionality would be better than none.

And, by the way, Google won't work for seaching these forums, or any other forums using php for that matter. Now, if everything on this forum was on html, it would work.

Errrr no, Google won't notice the difference between an HTML and a PHP page, as in the end, the only thing that gets indexed is HTML. And since PHP is server side, the only thing you get when you call the page is still HTML. The only thing that can interfere with Google is session management, but AFAIK, Vbulletin doesn't have a problem with this. Therefore, the indexing of the pages should work as well as any other page.

I hate it when I make a typo, or accidentally have it show threads, and not posts as results for my search, and then have to wait five minutes to fix it (sorry for the run-on :p). I know it's not that improtant, but maybe just lower it a little.

Hmm, I beleve we should remove the search thingy and have a google search thingy.

And I was merged again...

I think we should possibly have different threads that discuss search, but I respect whoever's decision it was to merge me.

I am considering increasing it actually. :p We had a couple of database errors today.

I am leaving search on for now, despite today's problems. If the forum goes diwn again too quickly we may need to turn search off....

I am begining to understand why there is that little note next to search saying it should only be used by small forums. Or does the database error I get every time I post have nothing to do with search.

Then, you learn something new every day. :)

if the search function causes so many problems everytime is activated, why do people want it up? i really dont find it necesary or important in anyway, unless i was extremely bored w/ plenty of time on my hands and couldnt play any computer games.

lets just never activate the seah function again and save ourselfs of the same thing. having CFC down many many times

Search has its uses when you want to find things in old threads like a thread you remember or maybe you want to find a thread about a particular scenario to see if it already exists. So not everyone uses search but some people do find it useful.

The only problem with Google searches is they return information based on the last time the site was "spidered" so that post yesterday may have to wait a month before searching due to the phenomenal traffic on this forum.

This is one of the problems. I have not found it to have a lag of a month though. I usually find that if you cannot find the thread you are looking for on the last few pages of the forum, it is on google. Nothing like as good as the proper search though, but a shed load better than nothing.

Yes, Google has recently moved to continuous spidering rather than its monthly spider.
