Sentus Populusque Rmnus

How soon will you be able to make new cities?

How soon will you be able to make new cities?

Settlers require Internal Colonization, which requires Formation of States and Bronze Working, so I'm about two techs away. Research is going to be so much quicker now that Rome has a Palace which more than doubles our commerce output and is again further boosted by the Monarchy civic.

Once all dissenters were dealt with and all of Rome had sworn their loyalty to Rex Romulus nothing stood in the way of progress and Rome's place in the limelight. Under His Majesty's guidance many great things were achieved, among them the invention of the wheel, a disk carved from solid wood or other materials used to facilitate the process of forming clay pottery and to help transport stuff. The population of Rome grew bigger than it ever had been before, now easily measuring in the thousands. The King also ordered hunters and warriors to more thoroughly explore the surrounding area, partly in responsive to the aggressive expansion of our neighbor, and had the people continue improving the countryside as well as fishers searching for new bountiful waters.

The project closest to his heart was the experimentation with copper and other metals. Under his direction it was burned, made wet, buried, fed to goats, carried atop a mountain and danced around, and of course thrown at birds, but almost nothing led to practical results, until finally, when he was at the ripe age of 60, a rare metal called tin was discovered and found to show promise. It took some more years to discover the best ratios and temperatures, but in the end mixing copper with tin proved to create a sturdy and robust metal capable of cutting through a great many things, but mostly the flesh and bones of your enemies, which he called bronze. Never since the invention of pottery has a material found so many practical applications, able to create all sorts of tools, weapons and armor. The people of Rome owe their king many thanks for his dedication to their wellbeing.

Unfortunately one day he was called to the spirit world, but not without promising to one day return and continue his just and wise reign. He had left no children behind, being more interested in tinkering with tools and researching the applications of copper than women. However our people could not possibly go back to the old ways of being without a leader, so instead it was decided to crown the head servant in the Palace the new temporary king until Romulus would return. His name I'm too lazy to make up is lost to history, and while nobody could measure up to the one true king he at least did a decent enough job. Still, it is undeniable that with His Majesty's death an era came to its close and a new one began.

Oh and also there were some hunters walking through the woods and meeting faraway people and stuff.

Btw feel free to critique my writing style as harshly as you want. Obviously there must be something I'm doing wrong or the number of my readers wouldn't be in the single digits.

Are the pictures okay? Too small, too big, too unreadable? Too many screenshots or not enough? Right focus?

What about update length and the time between them? I'll have you know I already played quite a bit farther and have more than 50 screenshots ready to go. (Not having to stop every ten turns and ask the populus for every little thing makes this move so much smoother.) The idea is to have a buffer to maintain a weekly update schedule even if I don't actually play in the meantime so we don't run into a months long hiatus again, every update being about the same length. Is that okay or do the like three of you prefer me to update as I play, some updates being humongous and others pretty small?

I refuse to critcize your writing style:nope:. But the screenshots are indeed a bit hard to read. Your readers are maybe not the masses;).

I just can't please anyone, can I? First people tell me my screenshots are way too big, now they say they are too small. What should I do about this? Increase resolution? Decrease size of screenshots only to 75 instead of 50 %?

;)Notable and remarkable, that your secureness in writing style doesn't extent over to the screenshot sizes. Just go by what's pleasant, in this case, not pleasant to the linguistic half of the brain but the visual half, pleasant to your eye. And forgive me my smartassing.

I prefer the spoiler method. Keep original size but put in spoilers so:

1- May be boring to scroll right-left but all info is visible;
2- The page won't take a lot to load all pics pushing you around it as it loads the pics

The 2nd reason is the most important actually.

It would be nice if civfanatics wouldn't stretch the text to conform with the widest image. That is something which has always annoyed me in general.

It's funny that they only do this in normal threads. Group threads the text don't stretch, which is far better to see.

The decades following Romulus' death saw a stark decrease in centralization. While there was always a king, nobody took the crown really that serious. The people of Rome saw their ruler only as a temporary figurehead who would step down once Romulus returned from the spirit world, which would totally be any day now you guys!

That isn't to say nothing happened in those years. For one, as the generations passed memories of our great war against the neighbor faded and less and less people were filled with irrational hate against them, until one day a group of shepherds decided to gift some of their surplus wool to them as a gesture of goodwill to prevent future conflict. There they learned that their tribe calls themselves the Etruscans. Shortly after a fire in the forge broke out, and the whole town had to work together to prevent it from being destroyed and to repair the damage. While the exact cause is unknown, many suspect it was done by one of the elders as a protest against the normalization of our relations with the Etruscans.

Scouts secured the surrounding territories, fishermen doubled their yearly catch, and workers improved the countryside. All in all things were looking up, until one day not one but two shepherds proclaimed themselves the re-reincarnation of Romulus, and accused the other of being the re-reincarnation of Remus... again. The current King made a public announcement but nobody cared what he had to say so the shamans just had them repeat the same ritual as their previous reincarnations. Because history repeats itself first in earnest, then as farce, one of the two suffered a deadly accident when climbing down the hill upon which he conducted augury, so the other was crowned King Romulus by default.

There was much rejoicing upon the re-ascendancy of Rex Romulus to the thrown, and some bloodshed. Actually mostly bloodshed. There was a bunch of skeptics doubting his claims, so he had them sentenced to forced labor, along with the previous king and all his relatives. But apart from that everyone was quick to cater to his every whim.

All hail Rex Romulus I! (Or II or III depending on how many of his reincarnations of his you believe to be real. Not that you would ever doubt the word of your king, would you? ... That's what I thought...)

Btw I've still got about 40 screenshots that have been downsized, but after that I'll upload them in original size in spoilers. I'll try to maintain a weekly update schedule with about a dozen screenshots each.

Btw for those who aren't following the Temporary Leave Announcement Thread in the PBEM forum, for the next month or so I am extremely limited in my capacity to access the Internet, that is also in my ability to upload my screenshots. Expect the next update one week from now at the earliest.

Ah internet troubles. Gotta love 'em

Never mind that, all is well again.

I still won't update until next weekend because now I have to catch up with uni stuff I missed.

Eww schoolwork. It digs into my story-writing time like a byotch.

When you finally reach the moment in college that you can work on your own work/thesis/project, then studying and doing what you like most (or at least a lot) become almost the same thing. I'm eager to reach this moment on college, then I'll create my own mod/game.

For those wanting to do or doing college on writing, then I believe S&T will be of great help.

But while we have to study several things we don't really like or that have nothing to do with what we want to create, then we have to keep this struggle for free time for everything.

Under his Majesty's guidance many great things were achieved in Rome, most notably the invention of sophisticated spearheads of various hard materials like stone or bronze to better hunt and fight.

The population of Rome went forth and multiplied, to such an extent that many people felt the village and its surrounding lands were becoming too crowded. Furthermore there were still some subversive elements who just wouldn't accept the divine authority of their king. Also Rex Romulus wasn't terribly trusting of our Etruscan neighbors, despite the recent improvement in Roman relations with them, and wanted to curtail their expansion. Our King decided to solve all these problems at once by gathering all the rebel scum together with his most loyal guards and a few volunteers and ordered his oldest son Ravennus to organize the settlement of an outpost on the other coast than the one Rome itself is located on to prevent us from being surrounded by the Etruscans. Roughly a quarter of Rome's population was to be relocated to this new settlement, with the enslaved rebel scum taking over the brunt of the hard work necessary to establish the new community.

The trek was long and hard, and many slaves died, but finally, after several decades and the deaths of both Rex Romulus himself and the leader of the expedition the new settlement of Ravenna was established. One of the first things its population set out to do was to properly harvest the many clams found in the nearby sea.

Unlike his first two incarnations this Romulus was quite fond of women folk, and the many children they beard him. While on his deathbed he decreed that all his descendants were to father at least one son, and that upon the death of his father the youngest one is to claim the title of Rex Romulus unless he is unable to procreate, in which case the crown goes to the next oldest son.
Then he died.

...

The king is dead, long live the king! All hail Rex Romulus II!

Where his father focused on domestic development and expansion the new ruler had taken a keen interest in trade and foreign relations. He sought trade and open borders with all the known civilizations, but was denied by almost everyone. Only the so called Illyrian people on the other side of the sea of Ravenna welcomed his messengers with open arms as they too had a royal dynasty and were interested in how best to keep the common plebs under your yoke lead their subjects to glory and wealth.
