Sexist Game or Sandbox?

A lot of that I believe was motivated by a general dislike of the Eastern Romans on behalf of Western European historians.

Specifically I believe it has to do with the schism between the Greek and Latin churches.

In OT topics like "how do you put your silverware in the washing machine" are both valid and interesting. We've made it to 12 pages in this thread, so it's hard to make the "not worth own thread" case. It seems like the kind of question that would straight up derail other threads.

If anybody other than the character you're controlling is having a good time in CK2 you're doing it wrong :p.

My understanding is that the people of the time called themselves Roman in the same way the larger east/west combined empire did, and that Byzantine is a newer term for East Rome that became common usage after the Ottomans ended their existence either way. Is that mistaken?

More or less right.

Byzantium is a modern term they regarded themselves as Roman.

The west would call then the Empire of the Greeks.

It was definately a political continuation of the Empire and the Roman institutions and army lasted into the 6th and 7th centuries. Paganism survived into the 6th Century and in isolated spots into the 8th perhaps 9th century.

I lean more towards that the Empire fell in 1453 with the last remnants in 1460/61.

But yeah you could argue 6th, 7th century or 1204 or 1453 for an end date of Rome and a few other dates. It wasn't nominally Roman after the Arabic expansion.

Not to go all "meta" on the thread, but it's interesting to see Lexicus get "attacked" from the left & be like "hey, I think you're going too far & here's why I believe that." I lurk in a lotta threads, very rarely post, so I've seen & can predict, most poster's general takes on any given issue, Not to say they are formulaic, or uninteresting, just that I know where many people stand. The points brought up by both sides are interesting & often enlightening even if I can usually predict who will be on what "side" of an issue.

All that said, my point here is that everyone, it seems, fails a "purity test" at some point. There's always some issue where you're not "ONE OF US" enough, left or right, that you get thrown in with "them" (the bad guys).

fwiw. just an observation.

That's the way it should be. Tribalism is wack. "You're exempt from our standards so long as you're on our team." is painfully obtuse.
Funny that you seem to only notice this now, and not in the countless previous threads where this exact argument was pushed forward.

Weird insult. I'm trying to think of someone I've agreed with simply because they're on "my side" here and not really coming up with anything. I've fought with just about everyone on at least one major issue. Who are you saying I exhibit this hypocrisy with?

Yeah, I think I'm going to take this opportunity to get some DLC...but is the game now free to play forever or just for this weekend?
There seemed to be no mention of it being time-barred on Steam, so... hopefully for ever?

Yes, it's "free to own" right now.

I picked it up on sale a long time ago, but didn't get any DLC. Still haven't played it...Paradox games tend to suck me in so that I neglect inessential things like eating for hours and hours...so I've wanted to wait until I have some substantial amount of free time...

I have all the dlc except jade dragon.

Uber fast net for hosting EUIV

Some CFC MP?;)

It's usually forever.

Everyone gets to use host dlc.

They did a humble bundle not to long ago. All the DLC plus game for $16 iirc.

Crusader Kings 3 is happening!

From my perspective, its greatest challenge will be to avoid appearing diminished on release in relation to its heavily expanded predecessor. Not sure how they could work around that and dodge the flak. It's unrealistic to expect so much content from the get-go.

Also, apparently, the phrase "Deus Vult" will not be featured in the game, since it has been apparently fueling racist memes. :dunno:

Yeah just got a CKIII thing on launcher.

Agree with your comment. Imperator was to bare boned at launch.

Not to surprised about the Deus Vult thing.

Interesting. Not sure I'll get it though as when I played CK2 it felt like I was constantly waiting for something to happen rather than being in the drivers seat.

My problem (as with all Paradox games) is rather on the opposite end of the spectrum, that their game end up bloated after tens of DLC. And also the conundrum at release "is it even worth it to buy the game before the first five years, considering it will be completely unrecognizable later ?".
