SGFN-08: Random AWM Succession Game

No, don't burn any cities. The flip risk is low, Greece will be gone soon, and every city we keep saves 6gpt.

We can wait with the new palace until the new core is ready (i.e. has markets and barracks in the important cities). We'll have endless cash for rushing things in the new core, after MT is done.

The game is won now, but it'll go on for quite some time to come, so I do think a better core will pay off!

I think thats an acceptable compromise, having the new core ready before the jump. Meanwhile, get some prebuilds going to finish a nice group of cavalry as soon as MT is researched. Usually courthouses and colosseums work well.

Good news/bad news:
Good news is we have Athens and Heraklia , I pillaged the Persian saltpeter (unless they ahve another source) and we have an unfilled army and a new leader.

Bad news is GA ended surprising me. 2 cities revolted, we're broke and disbanded a treb, still several turns from MT.

End of GA always sucks.

I would suggest that we keep at least one, and possibly two, armies unfilled for now, in preparation for having cavalry armies. I'd also suggest seeing what our sustainable research rate is and having a few cavalry prebuilds (use markets or courts I guess) ready to go. It's vital that we get cav armies online as soon as possible.

Have we a prebuild going for the Military Academy? I can't recall and am not in a good position to look at the save.

We do have a prebuild for MA.

I rearely build armies from scratch. Correct me if I'm wrong, they're like a regular build, with chops, disbanding units, rushing possible?
If we want to cut unit support costs, does disbanding defunct armies net much by way of shields?

By the way, real life is placing demands on my time. I expect to finish the turn set Saturday at the latest.

Armies give 1/4 of their cost to produce (so 100 shields, since they cost 400) when disbanded, just like any other unit.

I still wouldn't recommend doing that though as a way to reduce support costs. Disband some old catapults or warriors or something before you do that.

OK, finished a rather eventful turn set. Here's the full summary:
Spoiler :
Preflight:
IBT: Greek and Persians move towards choke point.
Greek longbow kills archer exposed near Dortmond
Greek galley on our West coast, Viking galley on our east.

Turn 1
Dotmond walls>barracks
Berlin musket>musket
Leipzig warrior>worker
HAmburg LB>musket
Nurnberg LB>LB
Bonn Aqueduct>Musket

Dortmund tries to trebuchet the road from Herekleia and misses all three times.
Ship 2 LB across to Dortmund. Empty Berlin to see if the Viking galley will drop an invasion force. Hopefully we can play a shell game shifting empty cities to get them running around (hopefully not snagging workers) till we can set up for the palace jump. Make a couple of beaker heads to compensate for loss of MP.
Vet horse at Dortmund kills LB and promotes.
Units in Greek mainland move up towards Corint. Stack of workers near choke point move back to the mountain.

IBT
Viking galley leaves without dropping any units (drat), but another's approaching our coast.
Greek LB wounds exposed horse who retreats to Dortmund
Persia has galley off southeast coast near undefended cities. (Light blue looked like medium blue). Hope it's unloaded.

Turn 2
Leipzig worker>warrior
Utrecht galley>treb (no barracks there)
Hanover musket>musket
Stutgart LB>LB
Woodstock settler>settler (?)
Bombard Persian units to 1 HP at the choke point.
Mediocre bombard at Corinth. Load 3 LB's into Hegst army and kill full health Hoplite losing 1 health to defensive bombardment. Kill second Hoplite with 2 health lost but promotes. Horsa army kills 2 health hoplite. Vet LB kills remaining LB and Corinth is ours. As it won't flip this turn, I move in Barbarosa to make army-maybe we can get a new leader at the choke. Move horse to hill SW of Corinth. No units in sight and no Atehns visible.
2 elite LB's kill Persians at choke. Horse army kills remaining immortal losing 2 health and retreating to the mountain.
Shift forces to cover Rock Am Ring and Heidelberg 3 from nearby Greek and Persian galleys.
Tempting fate, I kill the wounded LB by Dortmond with a vet horse losing nothing.
Matalurgy in 2. Back down science to 40% to net +44 GPT. Treasury is at 21 gold.

IBT:
Said vet horse it attacked by LB, loses 2 but promotes!
Greek, Viking and Persian Galleys sail on without dropping landing parties.
More Persian knight enter our choke point.

Turn 3
Leipzig warrior to worker
Starvation at Corinth.
Darn it disorder in Eindoven-where did that come from? Move in vet horse from choke point mountain.
Bombard then kill Persian knight with horse army that retreats to mountain.
Move exposed horse near Corinth from hill top to hill top spotting Athens 5 tiles SE of Corinth. Move LB/Crusader army to protect horse. Athens is size 8, and has at least 4 tiles of its cultural borders desert.
Leave Corinth empty and move SOD slowly towards Athens.

Found South Heidelburg in ICS area. Move workers to irrigate down into the ICS area in anticipation of specialist farms. We may lose some shields in the medium corrupt towns, but there's no fresh water on the south penninsula.Set it to wealth.

IBT
We learn metalurgy. At -71/turn, we will learn MT in 6. We have 114 gold.
Persians move knights into the kill zone, galleys buzz our coast w/o dropping units. A Greek LB attacks Dortmond and is illed by an elite spear who loses 1 or 2.

Turn 4
Leipzig worker>warrior (or vice versa)
HAmburg and Heidelburg Musket>LB
Aztecs are building Sistine
Bombard at the choke point. Kill 2 knights with elite LB's. Have brain glitch and kill Immortal with eleite horse, leaving it stranded on the marsh. Turns out was good gambit as I get LEADER! Send him north to board a ship for Greece.
Join worker to Hamburg, it is short food. Move another worker to chop forest.
Retire our curragh hanging around Panama. We've got high unit support.
IBT
Galleys buzz our coast. Exposed horse at choke point killed by PErsian knight. LB dies attacking Dortmond

Turn 5
Berlin musket>LB
Leipzig warriorworker
Bombard and kill stack of 5 Persian units in the kill zone. They go after the slave I planted rather than the exposed horse. I recapture the slave and move him to safety.
Rather than killing them in a town, I kill to LB's appraoching Corinth with horsemen. One goes back in town to heal and the other marches on with the stack of death at a snaiil's pace to Athens.
Richtoven builds army in Hanover. Gets in ship towards Dortmond along with some more fresh troops.
Cut back to 60% research -17 GPT with 41 gold in the bank . MT in 7 turns.

IBT
LB dies attacking Dortmond wounding eleite spear. LB kills cusader at Dortmond (drat)

Turn 6
Leipzig warrior>worker
HAmburg LB>musket
Stutgart LB>LB
Spear army pillages and takes out Persia's saltpeter
SOD moves towards Athens, attack next turn and new SOD with army of 3LB's and musket readies to take Heraklia when the walls fall!
Workers irrigate the heck out of the south of the home continent.

IBT
Greek LB's converge on Corinth. I'll let it go quietly.
We learn education and the GL is obsolete. Oh well.
Aztecs offer peace treaty if we give them metalurgy. We kill their emissary.

Turn 7
Berlin LB>musket
Leipzig warrior> guess what-a worker!
Nurnberg musket>LB
Treasury is at 9 gold. I turn down research to 50%, make 3GPT and MT in 5 if the GA lasts.
Lone horse in Corinth runs from approaching 3 LB's.
Attack on Athens-lousy trebs miss over 50%. Longbow army kills 2 full stregth Hoplites losing health. Second LB army kils 2 Hoplites with min health loss. That leave 3 2 health hoplites in town and I leave the attack to resume next turn. On a happier note, an elite horse attacks a LB adjacent to SOD and kills it withpout loss producing Hengest the 3rd or 4th. It retreats to the relative safety of the SOD.
3 trebs bombard Hereklia to get some idea of their defenses and miss 3/3.
Lose a vet galley to a reg galley who loses nothing outside Nurnberg that was blocking access to the sealane to Dortmond. Kill it with no losses with an elite galley and ship a pair of LB's across to join the fun.

IBT
Greeks sue for peace, are rebuffed.
Golden Age ends, we're in negative money, a treb is disbanded and 2 cities riot.
We're at zero gold, running -43 GPT to get MT in 6. Oy!

Turn 8
Athens falls to treb fire and the southern army at a toll of several health. 5 resistors and I set the others as scientists and set the city to wealth.
Heraklia falls with no loss of life. 1 resistor. Set the 2 others as scientists and city to wealth.
Kill 2 stray Greek LB's with elite horses with min loss of health. They retreat back to safety.
Vet Horse that was doing MP duty in Eidoven loses to the lone Viking MI but retreats. Luckily, the horse army at the cjoke is in range and kills it.
Lose a galley to a Viking Galley (not the one that landed the MI) and sink it with another.
Spear army pillages and moves, heading SW towards Persia's horses.
On to the cities and budget:
In most productive cities, switch some worked tiles scientists, some are in shortage, but have a bunch of turns till lose population. Switch to courthouses as cavalry prebuilds (80 shields, same as cav).
Southern cities leave to grow as farms, generally building settlers or wealth.
Worth mentioning:
Dortmond-allow to grow, set to Harbor if we net some iron or luxes on the Greek Continent.
Eindoven is building an aqueduct. I see it as a farm, but leave the aqueduct as possible prebuild for cav. It has 2 scientists to avoid disorder. Running a food shortage, but will be fixed with the great southern irrigation plan.
Frankfurt, (in disorder)-make 2 scientists, continue Sistine as prebuild for the MA. Zero growth.
Hamburg (in disorder) make 2 scientists, switch to colliseum as calvalry prebuild Zero growth.
Konigsburg make 1 scientists, leave it to market which finishes in 1 and will improve our income by 1 GPT after maintenance.
Leipzig-let finish worker then maybe switch to wealth?
Rotterdam, cont on aqueduct in 1 and Salzburg on its non-prebuild courthouse (open for debate)
Drop research to 50%, drop happiness tax to 0, change a scientist each in Berlin and Frankfurt to entertainers and we have a zero loss budget and Military Tradition in 6. Whew!
Oops-Hanover, Bonn and Heidelburg will finish their prebuilds too soon. Heidelberg with no shields in the box set to wealth for 2 turns. Hanover and Bonn, set to Coloseums and deal with the shield overrun, I'd say.

IBT:
Viking and galleys near our coast.
More Persians approach the choke point.
Athens in disorder-should have made the scientists entertainers.

Turn 9
Rotterdam aqueduct>courthouse prebuild (have to find 1 more GPT maintenance)
Leipzig worker>wealth
Konigsburg marketplace>courthouse

Move LB/Musket army from Heraklia to hills of Mycenae. They have furs. Start a SOD towards there.
Spear army pillages and finds Persepolis in the fog.
Move all but 2 horses from Athens in case it gets the cute idea to flip. i'd have liked to let the army heal, but not this turn.

IBT
Russians sail away
Viking Galey approaches Dortmond, underdefended for an attack from a 'zerk.
Lots of Greek LB's start towards Dortmond and Hereklia
Persians enter the choke.

Turn 10
Dutch treat-settler to wealth. Size 2, growth in 5.
Bombard Immortal in choke, kill with elite* horse leaving it exposed. It can die next turn.
Elite galley sinks viking galley of Dortmond with 2 health lost.
Elite horse kills LB near Dortmond and returns to cover of musket. 1 musket moves to hold the hills by Dortmond and hopefully send the 2 approaching LB's into the grasslans where they can be killed next turn.
SOD moves adjacent to Mycenae. LB army moves on its tile
Settler moves towards the ferry at Nurnberg (oops may have on auto move-sorry)

We captured and lost Corinth, captured and held Athens and Hereklia. The south of our continent is well irrigated and set up for sceince farming. We weathered the loss of th GA and our economy at present is 40% science, 0% happiness tax, and MT in 4. We have a clown each in Frankfurt and Berlin. Frankfort has about 200 shields towards Sistine as a MA prebuild. We have a bunch of coloseum and courthouse prebuilds for cavs. we have an unfilled army and one leader I kept free to make an army or rush for a palace jump or the MA if we needed it. We have 6 galleys at the Nurnberg/Dortmond ferry point.
If we want to abandon the security of the choke point, Marathon has spices and there's a group of soon to be furloughed irrigation wokers nearby to road there. We're poised to take Mycenae (a little shy on trebuchets though) and aquire furs. A harbor at Dortmond is still 13 turns away.
Regarding Leipzig- it was set to produce a warrior/worker alternating turns. I stopped it as we were pretty maxed on MP's and the cash flow was tight for more units. We can restart that or perhaps build settlers for the Greek territories.

Please give me constructive criticism as to my play in general and in succession play! Good luck!

Excellent play with regards to both, leading the military campaign in Greece as well as optimizing our research towards MT! The only tip for improvement I could offer:

Turn 8
Athens falls to treb fire and the southern army at a toll of several health. 5 resistors and I set the others as scientists and set the city to wealth.
Heraklia falls with no loss of life. 1 resistor. Set the 2 others as scientists and city to wealth.
Set captured towns to produce workers! They will be slaves and work for free, which is particularly important in this game, as we pay already very high unit upkeep and will need lots of workers for improving Greece.

Ok, Education is in... :( Well, that at least relieves us of the necessity to find a way of shepherding an enemy unit towards Berlin... :D We can just disband it now, whenever we need to. (Or invest a leader into a new palace, whatever feels best at the given time.) But for now I would say: every leader is a Cav Army! :hammer:

Who's up? Is that me? I can never remember where the roster is.

Our roster keeper is slipping. I think its you DW, but not sure.

Roster:
1: Overseer
2: GamezRule
3: Lanzelot
4: Splunge=>Just played
5: Sparthage=>Up, but can he play?
6: DWetzel

As I posted in Emperor SG, Sparthage has no internet access, currently. He has it in his sig when he will get it back. I believe it is 8/6.

Lets try to keep it rolling, DW, consider it a skip of Sparthage and you are up if you still want to play.

OK, got it--will be a night or two before I can play though. Any transitional thoughts appreciated.

I assume the plan is:

1. Continue to burn/capture Greece until exterminated.
2. Get cavalry online as soon as possible, including a cav army.
3. After getting MT, I assume we will want Astronomy semi-quickly (bigger boats, mainly) then give research a bit of a break until we get unit costs in order.

All 3 points are very good. I might add that keeping the Settler pump going is a good idea, but thats just preaching to the choir;)

@Lanzelot: I say don't abandon Berlin. Even if it's placement is a bit off, as you said, the game is now won. That hold's true with one less army. It will be tougher without the added culture that the GL adds.

All 3 points are very good. I might add that keeping the Settler pump going is a good idea, but thats just preaching to the choir;)

Definitely that. You didn't need to tell me that though!

I suspect we'll be able to set up new cities in old Greece pretty soon. Are we committed to the plan to jump palace at some point? That would clearly affect city placements. (Personally, I think it's more trouble than it's worth, and the flood plains make for excellent science farms which are much easier to set up, but I'm prepared to be outvoted on this.)
