SGOTM 04 - Peanut

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/civ4sgotm4/Peanut_SG004_BC0220_01.CivWarlordsSave

I've left the next person with a decision to make. Khan has requested Machinery from us (he's pleased now). Should we give it to him or not? I'm leaning no, but not entirely sure.

In dealing with an Indian attack and a barbarian raider, I forgot to pop-rush the granary in Sarmatian, so that should definitely be done as soon as the Khan issue has been dealt with.

I went ahead and traded for mathematics, as I didn't see much use for HR and definitely didn't think it warranted another revolution at this point in the game. Health is more a hinderance right now than happiness, anyway. I did move us toward fully researching optics and using the great person toward some other purpose. I also removed the engineer specialist to help regrow after the whip faster and give us an increased likelihood of a GS.

We'll also probably want to rush the trireme in GNH very soon if we want to keep our seafood resource. Gandhi has a trireme of his own on the way.

My notes:
Turn 0 - 385 BC
- Move spearman out of Nidaros to guard our coastal gold mine
- switch production in GNH to worker
- Trade Khan Metal Casting for Mathematics. Get 2 extra fair trade points and he is now pleased with us.

Turn 1 - 370
- Khan now shows a monopoly on Calendar
- Rush worker in GNH
- Workers near Uppsala finish chopping jungle, start on mine for gems
- Realize Sarmatian has been working on a worker, switch to a granary.

Turn 2 - 355
- GNH finishes Worker, starts an axeman

Turn 3 - 340
- Nothing

Turn 4 - 325
- GNH completes an axeman, starts an axeman
- Nidaros completes a forge, starts an axeman
- Khan founds Confucianism in Turfan

Turn 5 - 310
- Nothing

Turn 6 - 295
- Khan converts to confucianism, relations with Gandhi sour.
- GNH grow to 8
- Science % set to 90% (-6 GPT)

Turn 7 - 280
- spot an Indian galley off the coast near Uppsala, move troops to the coast to deter an invasion.
- Uppsala grows to 4 and immediately rushes the library
- Science % set to 80% (+2 GPT)

Turn 8 - 265
- Discover Machinery and enter the medieval era. Start research on optics (15 turns @ 80%).
- Uppsala complets a library, starts a forge
- Gandhi drops a sword and an archer next to uppsala, pull troops (3 chariots, 1 axe) back into city, trying to lure his troops out of the jungle.
- Gandhi also has a trireme heading around toward GNH, start on a trireme to counter

Turn 9 - 250
- Crush the Indian attack, losing nothing.
- Barbarians take advantage of the Indian distraction, sending an axeman in from the north (threatening to cut our source of copper, actually)
- somewhere in the last couple turns we lost a fair trade point with Khan and he's now back to cautious (I didn't know those went away...). He would now be willing to go to war with Gandhi in exchange for Machinery.
- Trade Khan our gems for his fish (Nidaros had grown unhealthy)

Turn 10 - 235
- Nidaros completes axeman, starts another
- Move troops to intercept barb axe

Turn 11 - 220
- Forget chariots only recevie the bonus vs. axes on offense and lose one when the barb axe attacks
- Khan requests Machinery.

Well, looks like I'm up :).
I got it and intend to play in the evening.
I think to trade machinery for monarchy with GK. I still want as many techs out of GK as possible as long as we don't know anybody else. This is a lousy value, but will keep him happy (should increase the "fair trade" counter).
BTW, the values behind this aren't really going down over time. But the points you get are evaluated by dividing by the number of turns you know the civ. So you need to trade/gift more over time to stay at the same value.

Other than that: defend against Gandhi (needs at least 1 better 2 trireme soon). Research optics, maybe keep the research at 0 then for some turns to upgrade triremes.

Sorry, I ungot it for now. I didn't get to it yesterday and I'm now not on my computer till Sunday night, when it might be too late to play.
So if somebody can step in until Monday please do.

So MailMan (or a space oddity, if you have time) please post a 'got-it' if you can play in the next 48 hours or so.

Played, the save.

We have optics and 2 caravels (one currently healing).
I lost Uppsala for a turn to Gandhi . Not nice - it's difficult to defend against his pretty advanced troops (elephant and sword), sorry.

My turn log:
Turn 0 220BC:
Kill a barb axe.
Rush granary in Sarmatier.
Decide to trade machinery to Genghis for monarchy.
I want the full to stay at good terms with him and that will increase our fair trade bonus.
I also generally think that we want to drive research, so want to avoid that he repeats our research.
I don't revolt, as we don't need it currently, but do need some production currently.

Turn 1 205BC:
Sarmatier granary->trading post.
Rush trireme in GNH.

Turn 2 190BC:
GNH trireme->trireme.

IBT: Gandhi's trireme ignores our trireme on the seafood.

Turn 3 175BC:
We now have sheep hooked.

Turn 4 160BC:
Nothing of consequence.

Turn 5 145BC:
GS born. Builds academy in GNH.

Turn 6 130BC:
Pyramids built in a distant land.

Turn 7 115BC:
Nidaros axe->explorer.

Turn 8 100BC:
Nothing.

Turn 9 85BC:
Rush trading post in Sarmatier.
Optics is in. Genghis still doesn't want to trade anything.
Set research to CoL as this might not get researched soon.
But also set slider to 0% to upgrade triremes. Ask Genghis for a gift of spices and get it.

Turn 10 70BC:
Sarmatier trading post->library.
GNH trireme->caravel.
Upgrade one trireme to caravel.

IBT:
Gandhi lands an elephant and a sword near Uppsala.
This can get dicey.

Turn 11 55BC:
Try to get reinforcement to Uppsala, but still have to hope that Gandhi pillages first.

IBT:
No dice. Gandhi attacks with both and kills both our troops in Uppsala.

Turn 12 40BC:
I can retake Uppsala with an axe and also kill the elephant.
Kill a trireme with a caravel.

Turn 13 25BC:
Move a few troops.

We want to find new friends now. But I think we also need caravels to stop Gandhi's ships.
I saved a little money to be able to do an emergency upgrade of a warrior if necessary.
I have research on CoL currently, hoping that currency can be traded from new contacts.

So MailMan, please post your status. space -are you available?

I've been super busy with my current move - we're in escrow on a new house, and have just listed our current house on the market. Needless to say, lots of stuff going on!

I got it. I will have time to play this weekend.
I will probably start in 24 hours.

Please post any thoughts and suggestions you might have.

I've been super busy with my current move - we're in escrow on a new house, and have just listed our current house on the market. Needless to say, lots of stuff going on!

Actually, same here. :) We're going to be closing in the next couple days... and then heading out to Chicago for a wedding right after moving in (exactly one week after closing). We'll see if I actually have time for anything besides work and house stuff over the next 2-3 weeks. Here's hoping the hotel in Chicago has reasonably priced internet service... (and that I don't end up just using it to do work ;) )

Summery:
met the other continent:
Issi very backward (got mono on us but lack many - such as writing)
Mehmed, backward as well, got HR on us (also has alpha)
Washington, the least back wards of the three, I trade compass for Mono and HR after checking that he is no one worse enemy.

apparently that was a mistake, since 2 turns later I met Hannibal. he is very advance and I traded with his worse enemy (I actually met him in New York).

defended without losses or pillage against trireme, jumbo and a sword.

got circumvent bonus and we are 4 turns away from the coleuses.

Notes for next player:
we just lost the gem for fish deal. try to get the fish back.
I suggest building a settler next in the capital.
we need 2 more workers as well
and of course reinforce the army

I recommend to gift a tech to Hannibal and to Mehmed. That should make them cautious again and we should then be able to sign open borders. But we have to do it soon so we get maximum benefit of the gift.
Maybe Washington doesn't like that, but that's probably no concern.

Hannibal we want at least cautious to trade techs (though he will not trade currently because of monopoly), Mehmed will even go to war at cautious (if we can pay his price). I'm thinking here that at some time in the future we will have him go after Spain, while we prepare to back-stab him.

I'll post a got it; probably wont be able to play until Sunday sometime.

space - if you have time this weekend, I'd be happy to step aside and play later. :)

OK. I'm taking a look at the save.

We've just made contact with 4 more civs so 6 total; with 7 rivals we have one more civ to contact.

We're 7 turns away from Civil Service. At some point we'll want to take most of the continent away from Genghis. Until there are other civs who have made contact with Gandhi, Genghis probably has to have a presence. Do we want to learn CS, get some Berzerkers, and start some trouble, maybe take the 2 closest cities? Or is that asking for too much trouble (we don't have much of an army currently)

We are considerably ahead of the other continent in research. In general I'd be pretty loose with trading/gifting techs with them; we want the general level of research to be higher, and they can't contribute much if they're researching older techs.

After CS, Paper (?), and then Education (?)

Groundnuthill - finish Colossus (4 turns), then either a Settler (grab the Iron to the North) or military, for MP duty and possible upgrade to Berzerker later. Settler could go to space SW of Iron square (best, IMO), or SW-W of Iron (contest India for Clams, but I think we lose that one).

Nidaros - after Aquaduct, probably military. Do we want a Stables, and then build more Horse units?

Uppsala - pop a Library when able, go for Forge next

Sarmatian - pop a Library in 3 turns, go for Forge next (needs an aquaduct, too)

If we don't go to war with Genghis nearterm, we can probably get Construction for CS; should we do that trade?

Please post comments. I'll probably play tomorrow night sometime.

(edit - I don't see any fish available)

Our military should be Berzerks and cats, IMO. No use for horse units (at least not before knights and we don't want to research guilds). So also no need for stables.

Build a monastery in GNH for the 10% research.

We could gift a caravel to Hannibal. He might find our continent and trade then. Another idea would be to spread confucianism to Hannibal. By that he would know Genghis.

I've played 5 turns and thought I'd post the status for any additional comments.

The 5th civ on the other continent is Brennus of the Celts. He is very friendly with Isabella, and pretty friendly with Washington. Like the others he is fairly behind in Tech.

I gifted Alphabet to Mehmud and Hannible, and was able to sign OB with both. I've also signed OB with Brennus.

I gifted the Southern Caravel to Hannible; he's pretty close to Genghis and his westernmost island, so perhaps he'll make contact fairly quickly.

India decided to land 2 WE's on a Gems space near Uppsala. They pillaged the space, and one moved over to the other gems space. Our Spear took out the first WE and wounded the 2nd when it came to attack; an Axe finished off the 2nd WE; I have to remine the Gems.

Libraries built in Sarmatian and Uppsala; Colossus finished in GNH. GNH and Nidaros are building Axes.

I got CS in 5 turns, and plan to start on Paper next, and can get that in 10 so that's probably the eventual stopping point.

Scouting the closest Mongol city revealed a Crossbow in it; fortified on a hill it will make mincemeat of our Berzerkers so attacking it is no option until we have Cats. Even then, we'd have to hold of reinforcements while the Cats do their thing.

Mongols will trade Construction; we only have HorseRiding and CS, so I plan to hold off for now. Brennus will trade us Calendar, and we have a raft of older techs to trade - plan to do this and develop our Spices (which Genghis was giving us but has taken back, by the way) and Sugar.

Should finish tonight; post anything other suggestions/comments you may have :)

GNH should build a monastery.

I would trade with Genghis first. He might get into WFYABTA if trading calendar from Brennus.

Revolt to bureaucracy and hereditary rule.

Pop a Forge at Sarmatian

Turn 15 - 395 AD
Forge completes at Sarmatian, set to Aquaduct next, but that can be changed
Nidaros completes a Spearman, set to Berzerker next
Our Gems are now reconnected

Realize we aren't in HR (gah!), so revolt

End of Log

GNH has the monastery. I didn't trade with Genghis because all I had was CS to trade with. Perhaps we can get enough Berzerkers and Cats going to take a couple of cities. GNH will finish a Settler in about 4 turns to gain us the Iron, finally; I was building roads around the settle space, so once the city is founded it should be connected.

Not sure if we want to develop a couple of civs on the 2nd continent to be research partners. Definitely we should get more contacts with India to reduce his research cost.

Long term - we could plan to take out Genghis, and really long term, gift the entire continent to India (we'd move to the 2nd continent by then). If most everything was researched, that should be fairly low risk.

Over to ainwood; attached an image from space of the 2nd continent.

GNH should grow and work commerce tiles IMO, not slowly (ok it's not that slow :)) build a settler. We could have assisted a settler build by forest chops, if we think it necessary. There is still a forested hill there and we even are working it.

We could get feudalism, map and a few coins for optics and paper. Not the best trade, but I don't think we should hold back techs this early in the game.
We also could stir up some trouble on the other continent. I think we should bribe Mehmed to go after Isa. It's probably the last chance now, before they get too friendly by shared religion. The idea here is to have later the possibility to team up with Isa, when we are going after the pyramids (which I think we should do). So I don't want to declare on Isa.

I'm not so sure what to research next. I think we should have astronomy soon, to be able to go to the other continent and also for building observatories (rather than expensive universities). BTW we should look if the goody hut near the stone island is still there. There would still be the chance to pop astronomy.
