SGOTM6 - Xteam

:wavey: Welcome back. There is some interesting reading as the map has changed to a lot more green thanks to Alan, Tomoyo and Gator. :coffee:

Hope Italy was sunny, relaxing and a great time. :thumbsup:

A little more warmongering :rockon: and we'll start getting cultured?? :rolleyes: :band:

EDIT - We are falling behind in the spam wars! :lol: :lol: :lol:

It looks as if the cultural conversion has started (especially in the last 20 turns)

I know how much you guys like tables and graphs and such so I thought I'd add one in myself :D
Spoiler :

Welcome back Willow.

I named a city in your honor, I think you'll like its quiet peaceful nature. Unlike my city which is our launching point to attack Japan from, if it doesn't flip before we launch our attack.

Nice chart Mistfit.

Lots of green...nice! And lots of white dots in the green - very nice! Are we still following some sort of planned urban sprawl to squeeze in as many towns as possible?

As for Italy, it was a good vacation. The weather was quite chilly (though warmer than Michigan), but I ate plenty of gelato anyway and enjoyed every bite. :) And saw lots of famous old things - like the Sistine Chapel (which appears will become ours when we take out the Iroquois...)

Edit: And thanks for the town! I like the location.

Just as a progress update.. Been a bit sick today so play has progressed slowly.. at turn 4 now.. and I decided to start a world war in turn 0.. :p
Only consentrating on fighting Japan and Carthage thou, and have taken cities from both (3 from carhage so far, 2 from japan)

@Gyathaar - Hope that taking territory from our enemies makes you feel better? :mischief:

Nothing like starting a world war when you're under the weather... ;) Hope you got our flipped city back again from those highly cultured Japanese. :mad:

Continued good luck and hope you feel better. :banana:

So you apparently liked where I left our knights. We had about 20 of them and I put 10 near Japan and 10 near Carthage.

Hopefully you will be able to secure 1 of the saltpeter sources for us as we learn MT.

Good luck with the rest of your turns and hope you feel better. BTW I was out from work (sick) on Tuesday when I played my turns so I think our game may be sick. Hopefully it gets well before it makes it back to me.

So you apparently liked where I left our knights
Actually I would have preferred to have them all on one side, with just 10 for each side I was not able to overwhelm any of them :p

Sorry, was not able to secure a salt yet :(
But Alan can get one in turn 1 or turn 2, or alternatively can get it from babylon in trade...
I have had really bad luck in the combat, cant remember last I lost this many knights :(

450AD, turn 160:
Adjust preferences...

I want to start a great war between the northern nations

First need to figure out who is already fighting who..

establish embassies with france, vikings, england and america

Paris is building Copernicus, 8 turns away (already has Pyramids and Leo's, and is at 27cpt)
London is building knights, and has Great wall
Nidaros builds muskets and has HG.. I look at the city view, and then look out of the window to compare.. no.. this is all wrong.. it doesnt look like that in RL :D
Washington is still building a market..

France is at war only with Japan (we are weak)
America is at peace with all (we are average)
Vikings at war with Japan (we are average)
England at war with japan (we are average)
Babylon is peaceful.. (we are weak)

We are getting ivory from america..

termorary put sci at 0%

call up babylon.. declare war

call op france. cancel our 2 lux for 24gpt deal to them
renegotiate peace.. they give ToG, 197gold and alliance vs babylon for spices,incense, dyes, WM and 206gpt
Tell them to withdraw their forces inside our borders, then declare war

Call up england, give them dyes,incense and silks for war vs babylon
declare on england

call up vikings. Reneg peace, get alliance vs france and england and WM and 30gold forspices,dyes, and 50gpt
declare war on vikings

give physics to america for alliance vs vikings and france (dont declare on them since they supply us ivory, and we have an undefended city next to them.

sci to 80% for MT in 10 turns.

time to look at cities.. we are building way too many temples.. we already have 72gpt maintainance, and we have too few workers.. only 47 native workers.. we should have about 100-150 more.

Switch many temple builds to workers, settlers, or harbors.

switch all catedral builds to libraries.. they cost same shields, give same culture.. but only costs half as much maintainance.. always build library first unless we need happyness (which we dont)

why have we settled on islands? They dont benefit us.. they will need both harbor and granary (wont get free from pyramids) to start being usable for culture towns, and even then they are only as good as an all desert town :(
Eventually we will have to gift them away to AIs so we can settle more land area (gifing them to AIs means they will puch back our borders there so we use less of domination limit)
Would have been much better to let AIs use settlers on them in the first place and used our settlers elsewhere..

no more units to attack :(

Use a 4/4 knight, kill a 3/3 musket in osaka.. raze it for 3 workers..

4/4 knight kills 3/3 sam in the open, promote

We are stretched way too thin on Carthage side now, and no way of getting reinforcements in a long time, so I make peace for 2 of the carthage cities plus 20 gold (we can always declare war again at any time)

This way we can take out the last mongol remnants while Carthage sends their units back into war with japan.

We are also stretched thin on japanese side, but can easilly ship reinforcements here..
We have a settler that can grab salt from japan next turn if we can raze Kyoto, else it will take him 2 turns to settle.
After we grab salt we need either to make a harbor, or to make peace with japan to get a trade route home.

Alternatively we can buy salt from babylon for MT and magnetism/ToG

We really need salt for cavs so we can speed up conquest.. knights are too slow, and dies too much to samurai

We are currently at 94 cities and 18.4% land

Nice bit of diplomacy. I especially liked suing for peace and gaining a tech and then redeclaring and your intial kickoff to world war was good. Is that your normal style?

With all the AIs at each others throats that should help limit them attacking us and should slow the tech pace. Sorry about those island cities. I had settlers in the area and it was either settle the islands or walk them, across country to find a spot to settle. I probably should have shipped them to the Japan side so we could claim cities there.

But I've learned a few new things, which is always good. Especially since I've been toying with your region of CFC. I've started a HOF diety level attempt. I abandoned my first attempt when after 18 cities I had no horses and I was IRQ. It was a good game also. I was even in techs upon entering the MA and I was even in number of cities with 2 of the 3 AIs and way ahead of the 3rd AI. I've got Mapfinder running to get me a better map to start my next attempt with.

Is that your normal style?
Nope, I usually never break my rep, but since it was already broken there was no reason to not take advantage of it... ;)
I actually discovered a new diplomacy method this week, and when I get time I will start a sid HoF game to take advantage of it :p

Very nice work, Gyathaar. Those MA deals were exquisite.

Gyathaar - just played
AlanH UP
Tomoyo - On deck

Got it. I'll play and post tomorrow.

Very interesting work with diplomacy. :goodjob: :cool: Another nice weapon in the arsenal of ideas. ;)

@Gyathaar - Hope you are feeling better. :viking:

Good luck Alan! :thumbsup: Let's get some Cavs into action clean these guys up to clear the way for some culture, whatever that is???? :p :lol: :lol: :lol:
Hope you are doing better as well Alan. :)

Edited for clarity!

Turn 170 550 AD Preflight
Move 2 caravels south to transport troops to Satsuma. Changed a couple of temple builds to settlers.

IBT English galley shows up. Carthage auto-ejects our troops. Mongol pike and spears heading for our towns.
Qingdao temple->knight, Camulodunum knight->knight, Qianqin worker->worker, Ratae temple->knight. Palace gets a second floor

Turn 171 560 AD Knight into Karakorum to defend against Mongols. Knights from Rusicade towards Mongolia.
3 knights ship from Camulodunum via Durocortorum, Shimonoseki, head for Kyoto.
@Kyoto. 4/5 knight retreats from 4/5 pike->3/5. 3/4 pike shows up.
Build New Rutupiae in old Mongolia.
LB kills Mongol pike outside Karakorum, redlines.

IBT Mongol and Japanese galleys near Karakorum. English galley heads towards leif's hideaway.
Hadrumetum worker->worker, Noviomagus harbour->worker, New Augustodorum worker->worker.

Turn 172 570 AD Iroquois have taken Edo, north of Kyoto.New knight production seems slow. There's one arriving next turn, way over in China. Let's hope he's in time to do something about the English galley threat. Pop rush a knight in Shanghai for one citizen. The old core production is mostly 4-7 turns away. Our existing knights are all over the place. Consolidate the ones near Kyoto, move the western ones towards Mongolia.
5/5 knight kills 4/4 Mongol spear near Ta-Tu-> 2/5.
Japan's saltpeter needs a harbour, so it's a way off as we still have resistance in the captured towns and our own are at pop 1 right now. Decide to buy saltpeter from Babs. He wants Mil Traditiona nd Magnetism. OK - he hasn't any horses, so Mil Tradition is not going to help him a lot. We only have one knight in a barracks right now. Upgrade him for 20.

IBT English galley heads east. Mongols land spear and LB near New Ruputiae. China declares on America. France and India ally against us. India declares war. Japan land a samurai near Tabriz
Utical worker->worker, Shanghai knight->cavalry. New Lapurdum worker->worker. Hangzhou kinght->cavalry. Ulaanbaatar temple->worker. Paoting worker->worker. New Burdigala temple->library

Turn 173 580 AD cavalry kills 3/3 samurai near Tabriz, redlines. Elite knight retreats from 3/3 spear on hill near Ta-Tu. 4/4 knight kills him, redlines. 4/5 knight kills mongol spear in forest near New Ruputiae, 2/5. Move an archer into Deva and upgrade to longbow to provide a minimal defence against India's elephant sitting in Axima. Upgrade 2 knights. Knights advance on Kyoto.

IBT Neocarthage stack moves west towards Japan. Mongol units advance. Indian elephant from Axima attacks Deva, retreats from LB->2/4 :). Spear moves into Axima. Japanese LBs move towards stack at Kyoto.
Sabratha worker->worker, Hovd settler->settler. Agendicum knight->cavalry. Darhan temple->settler. Shantung worker->worker. New Tolosa worker->worker. Carthage starts Newton's

Turn 174 590 AD@Kyoto:
4/4 knight dies vs 5/5 pike->3/5. 4/4 knight kills 4/4 pike->2/4. 4/4 knight dies vs 3/3 musket, promo->2/4. 3/4 knight kills 3/5 pike->2/4. 5/5 knight kills 2/4 musket->1/5, takes Kyoto.
Settler builds New Monguntiacum on saltpeter hill west of Kyoto.
Japanese capital has jumped to Tokyo. Babylon is now Industrial, and has Nationalism. No deals.
Upgrade 5 knights, 100 gold. Upgrade 2 archers. Cavalry kills Mongol LB, no damage. Knight kills Mongol LB, no damage. Elite knight kills Mongol spear in forest, no damage.
Indial elephan is redlined, but covers a 3/3 longbow. Best we can get into Deva for defence is an archer and a knight (upgraded). Move an archer over to Shimonoseki to suppress resistance.

IBT Indian Elephant takes Glevum! Indian LB dies vs cavalry in Deva. Iroquois troops seen moving on Japan. English want to talk: They'll give 4gpt + WM for peace. As far as I can tell from our turn loogs we don't have anything tied to war with England. Why not? OK Liz. England galley and caravell head home. Japanese LBs back off. I guess the Carghaginians and Iroquois worry them more than our wounded knights.
Satsuma worker->settler, Leptis Minor worker->settler, Verulamium knight->cavalry. Gergovia worker->settler, Ise worker->worker, Isca worker->settler, Segustio worker->settler, NewVerulamium library->cavalry. Babs are building Newtons.

Turn 175 600 AD Cavalry stack (5 units) lines up outside Dalandzadgad (Mongol capital) or final showdown.
4/4 knight dies vs redlined elephant in Gelvum! Cavalry kills him with no damage and recaptures town.
Build New Glevum. Upgrade 4 knights (80 gold)

IBT Vikings want to discuss something: Peace straight up. Not a good idea, as we we have an alliance with America, tied to an MA vs France, and America supplies us with ivory. Mongols declare on America! Japanese LB captures a stack of workers outside Shimonoseki.
Mohacs settler->settler, Tabriz temple->cavalry, Augustodorum knight->cavalry, Lapurdum knight->cavalry, Lezoux knight->cavalry, Noviomagus worker->settler, New Lugdonum library->cavalry. Gator's point riots?

Turn 176 610 AD @Axima (Indian town on our northern cape) cavalry kills 3/3 spear, no damage, takes town.
@Dalandzadgad (Mongols capital) Cavalry takes -1hp from LB, retreats from 4/4 pike->2/4
Cavalry kills 3/3 pike->2/4. Cavalry kills 2/4 pike, no damage. Cavalry kills 4/4 LB -> 2/4 takes town. Pop 2. Mongols are out of it.
Upgrade 3 knights
Build New Axima near Kyoto.
Knight kills LB with no damage near Shimonseki. Knight recaptures workers
Elite knight dies vs 3/3 samurai outside Kyoto->3/4. 4/5 knight kills 3/4 samurai->1/5.

IBT Indian elephant stack shows up, threatening New Axima and New Tulosa. Iroquois want to talk: WM swap? OK.
France wants to talk: Wants 20 gold for peace. Nah! I think that's part of our deal with America! She has Nationalism.
Theveste worker->temple, Richborough settler->settler, Ratae library->cavalry, Deva knight->cavalry, Mandalgovi worker->temple. Palace gets a third floor and an east wing.

Turn 177 620 AD Knight approaches the stack of three Indian elephants. Sees they are backed up by two LB on a mountain. They can't reach New Tulosa this turn because of forests, so focus defence on New Axima.

IBT Three elephants die attacking New Axima. No losses. Chinese move in, Iroquois look a bit threatening. Babs wants to talk: WM swap? OK.
Karakorum settler->settler, Nnjing library->cavalry, Camulodunum knight->cavalry, Rusicade worker->temple, New Curovernum worker->worker

Turn 178 630 AD
Cavalry kill two more Indian elephants, see four more approaching. Buy an embassy with Iroquois. Building knight, has Sistine Chapel, Heroic Epic, only furs hooked up, three spears in residence. 6spt, sliders at 6.2.2. Pop 4 includes 2 entertainers. He has an alliance with France vs Vikings and is also at war with Japan. He will give an alliance vs India for ToG and Magnetism. OK. Apparently we shouldn't trust him as he betrayed our friends the Monguls. Weren't they the last civ we destroyed? Checking around, we don't seem to have any other alliances. So I was mistaken about the American ones.
Cavalry dies, redlines 4/5 samurai outside Kyoto. 2nd cavalry kills samurai, no damage.
@Nagasaki: Knight dies vs 3/3 musket->3/4, knight retreats vs 3/4 musket, no further damage.

IBT The alliance with Iroquois has the desired effect. The elephants attack Edo, kill one spear and retreat against a second. Another attacker takes Edo. One LB attacks our cavalry and he retreats.
Qingdao knight->cavalry, Xi'an harbour->settler, Glanum settler->settler, Durocortorum worker->library, New Richborough knight->cavalry, New Glanum temple->library.

Turn 179 640 AD Rush temple at Choybalsan.
Near Edo: Cavalry kills LB, no damage, promotes.
@Edo: Cavalry kills 3/3 elephant->1/4, 3/5 knight kills 1/3 elephant, takes town with 1 resister and 2 catapults.
Beyond Edo we see a stack of 3 elephants (one redlined) + 2 LB + a pike and 2 spears.
Gandhi will give us his 8 gold and WM for peace. He would also give us Dacca, but it's not much use to us. We have an alliance with Iroquois against India, but that's never been a problem for us before. We don't owe Iroquois anything. I sign a peace deal with India, wihch seems to upset Hiawatha. Now we can focus on Japan.
@Nagasaki: cavalry kills musket, redlined.
Build New Deva.

IBT France and America sign peace. Japanese galley sailing up the straits.
Qianqin worker->worker, Tatong settler->settler, Choybalsan temple->library, Erdenet harbour->temple, Ningpo worker->worker, WillowBrook temple->settler

Turn 180 650 AD Build New Lezoux
@Nagasaki: cavalry kills spear, promotes, takes town with 2 resisters.

After action report
Japanese front: There are two settlers waiting in Satsuma to start taking over the Japanese territory now that we've pushed back the borders. There's a stack of cavalry and knights capable of attacking Tokyo next turn. Japan's countes have pretty well stopped coming. There are three cavalry in Shimonoseki with movement points left (7 tiles via roads). I've left two cavalry available in Lugdorum and Burdigala in case the Japanese galley drops a samurai in our old core next turn.

Building and development: We have 105 towns and 9.1 tiles per town. There's a settler north of New Camulodunum, heading to fill space one tile west of his current position, or you could put him north east of Chengdu if you prefer. There are lots of spaces in the old Mongolia. Workers are starting to irrigate grass away from the cores, on the basis that as soon as we have steam we'll rail them for extra food. I've been reforesting tundra tiles, so don't assume you can get much more out of chops on the south coast. Anything with a road and forest on it has prolly been chopped already.

We have steam in 7 turns. We are down Democracy vs quite a few civs, and up on some. We are strong or average vs most, weak only vs France and Babs. We have 5 knights and 21 cavalry.

Enjoy the save :D

Looks like another great turn set. :goodjob: :goodjob:

I'll need to have a look at the save, but it sounds like we have the Japanese on the run and can prepare for the next target. :spank:

After Steam we must need Communism and then we're off for culture-land, wherever that may be???? :mischief: ;) :rolleyes:

EDIT - BTW, forgot to mention the nice save hiding spot! :lol:

Got it but will not play until tomorrow.

Sounds like we'll start culturing up soon, as soon as we get to Communism (which conveniently we can go into in a one turn anarchy), so I'll head in that direction. Steam should be a big priority, but does Industrialization have its normal importance?

Factories is not important imo.. normally replacable parts is important, but doesnt work in this game since that means no 40 shields builds possible..

While I don't think there will be a "line" we cross and all of a sudden we are maxing our cultural growth, there are some tasks yet to do if I understand Gyathaar correctly, and please correct me if I'm wrong.

We need the Pyramids and they are located in Paris.
We should try to identify and seize as many Lux's as we can within the boundries of what is practical to obtain.
We need to have enough space for our 300 cities, if that is still our goal? :cool: So we still should produce settlers and workers.
We should rail all food sources and, if I understand correctly, change BG's to irrigation? :crazyeye:
Once the culture blitz begins, seek peace with all our neighbors?

CRpMapStat says we are at 21.1% of tiles towards domination and have 105 cities. Here is the screen:
