SheepNES: The European Union

If you're going to put the French name of the EU, then I demand you put the EU in all official languages of the EU! Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Irish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portugese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, and Swedish! Otherwise, remove the French!

:p

Germany Agrees, we are European not French.

The United Kingdom would also like the elimination of the French in the name. Don't think just because you are the president of the EU that means you have authoritarian control. However we are in support of putting the name in every official language.

I will add German and English, the working languages of the EU Parliament.

(OOC: Sheesh, just because you are all barbarians does not mean you must drag France into the dirt aswell ;))
Actually, all 20 languages are working languages for the parliament.

But the Council of the European Union, which this is, only uses English, French, and German. So it's fine.

Are you guys going to make one thread per turn? Are we sure this won't annoy powers that be (a.k.a. the moderators)?

Welcome to 2008.

In light of the recent horrific Chunnel bombings and other acts of senseless violence, Luxembourg proposes Resolution #8:

Resolution 8
The European Union:
1. Condemns the senseless violence and loss of life caused by the recent Chunnel bombings and other such acts worldwide, including those in Sydney and Delhi;
2. Reiterates its commitment to world peace and international security;
3. Notes the importance of maintaining security while not sacrificing liberty; and
4. Pledges to uphold the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including articles 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 18 and 20, as well as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, including articles 1, 4, 8, 10, 12, 22, 47, and 48, regardless of whether opposing forces obey these principles.

Luxembourg votes YES on Resolution 8, firmly convinced of its importance and necessity.

Germany Votes Yes.

France ABSTAINS.

Our actions were not in anyway violating civil liberties and we are in full accordance with the EU Charter of fundamental rights. If such a resolution passes, we will be happy to oblidge by it.

OOC: All I did was close a mosque which expoused a fundamentalist agenda which calls for harm against our nation. That is perfectly legal. Free speech does not apply towards threats against a nation.

No accusations that your steps were not legal were made. We are simply warning of further steps that could be taken and would be wrong.

Resolution 8 is not intended as a denunciation of France. Luxembourg regrets France's abstention--on such an important issue, the EU should be unanimous.

The United Kingdom votes in favor of resolution 8

If it is not intended for France, then why do leaders of your nations openly state that France is pursuing a policy based upon racial prejudice? We are not, in any way, doing such a thing - again, we have arrested 670 individuals for participating in riots and have shut down a Mosque which has been proven to preach fundamentalist and violent threats against the nation of France.

We will not support any measure such as this when our so called "allies" openly insult us and exaggerate our actions for their own political gain.

Again, we reiterate that this is not a denunciation of France. Rather, this is a pledge that the nations of the European Union will uphold the fundamental rights of all mankind.

Belguim, The Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia all vote YES

Romania, Bulgaria voted NO

The others abstain on resolution 8.

France will switch its vote to a YES as we have been significantly assuaged of our concerns and due to the fact that the British government has agreed to retract its statements concerning our actions. We will fully abide by the EU Charter of fundamental rights.

(OOC: I will update the thread tomorrow.)
