Should family values be controlled by the government or by one's family?

Is morality the responsibility of the state?

The name "family values" implies that they are the family's responsibility. But certain political groups disagree. Certain groups seek to use governmental power to force their family values on other people. Some of these very same people, or at least their allies, claim to be libertarians, believing in limited government. Is legislating morality when a vice does not harm others the government's job, both in family matters and otherwise?

A family's values should, of course, be controlled by the family.

However, there isn't an overwhelmingly obvious argument against the government being used as a tool to regulate culture.

Family values should be controlled by the family as long as those family values don't teach the child to disobey a law.
That's a rather vague definition: What is the law? Is it illegal to have multiple wives? To drink alcohol? To swear in front of a woman?

Where are all the people against legalizing gay marriage? I was hoping to pick a fight with them. Next time I shouldn't defeat their argument in my first post.

Rather, you shouldn't make a lame poll that deals in moral absolutes.

A person's values, once an adult, are up to them and are netiher the business of the government nor their family.

The law is whatever the government says it is. Ideally this would only be crimes that are reasonable, such as murder, theft, fraud, etc. However, the law isn't perfect IMO. So if the law is don't chew gum on Tuesdays, then parents shouldn't be telling their kids to chew gum on Tuesdays. Although the law is stupid and unjust people should follow the law for the good of society.

Or you could tell your children that they can pressure their government to change a stupid law. That's where we get all these fun fights.

I think the family values should be controlled by the family because as the name suggest they are "family values":p.

Family values are shaped by the Brownian motion of society, which is the way it already works and I'm fine with that.

So should Government be, at least in a moderately sucessful democracy.

Anybody wanting to influence how people run their families better argue his case in front of the body public.:)

I am against gay marriage...but I didnt think thats what your post was about. The government will make law that it views will be popular with the pople and get politicians re-elected. Plain and simple.

By the way, I dont think you can defeat my arguement against gay marriage for that matter either. :D

Because you have no argument, just some religious and political talking points.

Sorry, I do have an arguement and not all of it is religious either. But I guess its hard to have a "real" debate on issues if all you do is dismiss everyone else's viewpoints.
