SimCity 5

When I tried to play Sim City 4 again recently, I was really surprised about this as well. Its a really, really, good looking game. I mean wow.
You guys should check out some of the buildings released by some very talented 3D modelers over the Simtropolis. Some really good stuff.

Heard CitiesXL was also pretty buggy, particularly the fact that the game broke once you got a certain amount of high population.

Thankfully, there's still SimCity4 to be played if all goes not well. I feel that despite being literally a decade old, SimCity4 has aged ridiculously well and still looks phenomenal today - and I mean really phenomenal, enough that if they made SimCity 4 today I wouldn't have thought of the graphics as outdated in anyway whatsoever. To be honest I think SimCity 4 looks better than the new one, which looks a tad cartoony.

The art in SimCity 4 was done very well in a timeless style

Yeah CitiesXL, one of them anyway, had a problem with road expansions too. You can upgrade/expand the roads, but even the first expansion that makes it few pixels wider destroys EVERYTHING ALONG THE ROAD which is ridiculous.

And a pity, they are the only competition to Sim City :/

I bought both citiesXL 2011 and 2012. The main thing I like about the game is that you can set up the roads in any direction or angle you want - you're not limited to 90 degree angles like in SimCity 4. I also like how when you plop down a hospital, the affected area is dependent on your road system, and isn't just a circular radius around where you put it.

Yeah, the game has issues, but I want to see what they do with the next release. I am not buying SimCity 5.

What a stupid way to organize a closed beta. To sign up for the beta EA asked you to submit your dxdiag results. Then they decide to release a lot of beta codes via twitter and other websites. Also, some people who signed up for the beta get codes on friday, others later in the weekend (while the beta only lasts til monday).

To add insult to injury you get only one hour to build a city.

"You can have up to 10 regions (in total, regardless of whether they're private or shared with other players)" tied to one Origin account.

So... basically unlike in SimCity 4, where we could have a gazillion regions (in theory), we are limited to 10 with the new SimCity, not to mention we are completely reliant on the internet.

Okay, I don't want to turn into a rabid EA-hater (though I understand their plight), but I am really tempted to become one now.

Since all of your save data is hosted online this isn't surprising, and most players probably won't reach that limit. However, considering there is a very sizeable Sim City community there will be a lot of people, even if they aren't a majority, who will want to exceed it (especially with no terraforming).

Another mark against the MO aspect.

To be fair, it was later clarified that one region is not the same as one city:

"It's like 160 cities?" "And of course, you can wipe regions that you don't care about anymore. So 160 in play at a time."

-Ocean Quigley, developer

Of course, who wouldn't prefer unlimited? Or as a compromise, 10 regions "in the cloud" at a time, but being able to save one to your hard drive if you want an 11th instead of losing it entirely. I'd even be okay if that were released in a patch after release - you probably wouldn't need 11 regions on day one.

I'd still consider this limitation a negative, but it's a lot less bad with 160 cities versus 10 cities.

Re: the dxdiag stuff: That probably is somewhat helpful for them in figuring out what hardware/drivers to target for. It could also be really helpful in debugging certain issues if they can tie bug reports to dxdiag submissions.

Although the Internet-reliance still means I'll probably skip this game, and maybe buy Cities XL at some point, even though I suspect this will be the better game.

Side note: Ocean Quigley is actually a pretty cool name.

I got a beta invite by email. I can't use it this weekend though. Is it worth giving the code to someone or is this something that everyone who registered got invited to?

It'll probably result in you losing all of your games (even the non-EA ones) and a minimum jail sentence of 10 years.

I'm not going to buy this. :(

Why not?

Anyway, I got my email with activation code saturday (about 1 in the morning). I must say I like it so far, even though the beta is very very limited. I didn't notice any bugs but that's probably because you can only play for one hour and region play is disabled. This is more of a demo than a beta really. Perhaps EA didn't call it a demo because they wanted to create a little hype and only allowed a small group play the game.

Anyway, the gameplay is addictive. I'm a bit disappointed about the map size (The maps seem smaller than medium size SC4 maps). Also, in SC4 it could take weeks or even months to fully develop your regions. I've got a feeling it will be faster with this version but because the beta is limited it's hard tot tell.

I agree the cities are going to develop far quicker but if you are playing with multiple cities in a region and controlling them yourself I guess that would be the weeks and months aspects that we all knew in SC4
