I want to practice simple modding, so I'm going to start with leaderheads/some .xml editing.

Warning: This will be an unnecessary, primitive mod. It'll be just made for simple entertainment purposes.
I am planning to make a very, very simple graphical mod (which also includes
some altered text) with static LHs replacing the present ones. It's based on some idead from a German Civ forum. As you can see, the current political (Head-of-State or gov't) leaders are to be replaced with more abstract ones- representing principles and ideologies that are important for the respective (or even the world's) history.
Some of the leaders were still HoS or HoG, but others are either visionary philosophers or demagogues, reformers and prophets etc. If there aren't enough great political/religious persons, I consider adding great artists and other cultural leaders such as Hafiz for Persia.
... Please add your suggestions, criticisms, etc. ...
The LHs (.dds) have to be made yet, but here are my suggestions so far (the catalogue is really FAR from complete),. My first ideas:

+Mongolia: Bogdo Gegen Khan (?)
+America: Ralph Waldo Emerson, ???
+Germany:Martin Luther- Spiritual, Philosophical- ???
Karl Marx- Philosophical, Aggressive- State Property
+France: Rousseau- ???, ???- Representation or Police State or Environmentalism :p
Voltaire- Philosophical, ???- Freedom of Religion/Speech
+England: Hobbes- ???,???- Police State
Locke- ???,???- Universal Suffrage
perhaps Thomas More?
+China: Sun Yat-sen- Organized, Creative- Representation
Confucius- ???,???- ???
+Greece: Platon- ???,???- Police State
+Rome/Italy: Cicero- ???,???- Representation
Machiavelli- Aggressive, Organized- Representation

Any more ideas? ...

Another project, which is meant as a joke (but Wikipedia provides enough images to turn into LHs:

CIVmusic- Great Composers In Charge. New civs, leaders are replaced by composers.

Germany: Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner...
Austria: Mozart, Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg...
America: Ives, Copland
Czechia: Dvorak, Smetana
Finland: Sibelius
Norway: Grieg
England: Haendel, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Britten...
France: Rameau, Berlioz, Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen...
Russia: Glinka, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich ... ...
Hungary: Liszt, Bartok
Italy: Vivaldi, Boccherini, Cherubini, Salieri, Verdi...
Spain: Ortiz, Sor, Tarréga, de Falla, de Sarasate, Rodrigo...
and much more...

Alternatively, there will be the following musical civs: Renaissance music, Baroque music, Classical music, Romantic music, Contemporary music

The AI will be based roughly on the composers personality- Wagner will be a greedy war-monger, for example, while Bruckner will be a fanatical religious zealot.

D'Oh! Rousseau was from Switzerland. How could I forget that. Nonetheless, he will remain alternative leader of France for some time. I think I should rename the mod, as it still includes political leaders (but the choice is highly unconventional). Gandhi will still be in, but I thought about adding Robespierre and Cecil Rhodes (who weren't really great people, but rather despicable).

The first version mod is probably 70% done. I have to alter some .xml files yet, and I haven't changed the AI yet (It'll probably stay the same for some time). Not all civs are already converted: Russia, India, Mongol, Mali, Japan, Inca, Aztec, Egypt.
I'm looking forward to upload it today. Here's an overview of the leaders:
America: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Twain
France: Robespierre, Victor Hugo
England: Shakespeare, Cecil Rhodes (as a symbol for the Empire)
China: Sun Yat-sen, Confucius
Persia: Firdouzi
Arabia: Averroes
Germany: Luther, Marx
Spain: Cervantes
Greece: Plato
Rome: Cicero

You may criticze my choice; I've still to learn how to add more leaders.
Perhaps I'll replace Rhodes with Darwin (the Diplotext would be much cooler)!

This is a pretty neat idea. Much more appealing for nerds like me, who aren't interested in an immortal leader but the notion of a prevailing ideology.
