@ Toteone - If you try to take over Canada in any NES that I am Canada, I will have to kick your ass. Got that? Nobody takes over my country and wins. The last that tried, Fascist Britain in Sheep's Alt Hist NES, that failed miserably.

Nationalism is well and alive I see. ;)
No fear though, it only happens if I'm USA. First turn, I promise. Hope you get Canada. :D

Finally, a story...

The Yugoslav fighter streaked overhead as the Greek fire team trudged through the mountain paths of Epirus. They hadn't noticed it until too late, since the craft had popped up from behind a mountain five seconds before the Greeks had seen it. Infantry scrambled off of the path, looking for any possible cover. The average Yugo bomber response time was under a minute, so they would have very little cover before the enemy air hit.

Yugo bombers drifted overhead, dumping huge loads of high explosives on the path where the infantry had been. The whole world was raining down on the mountain, as five heavy attack craft in a "V" formation released nearly 50 tons of trinitrotoluene and cleared the area, wanting to get away from any nearby Greek SAMs. None flashed up at the bombers: Yugo air superiority was complete. Only infantry and heavily-disguised tanks could make it through Epirus and Thessaly untouched. All of the Air Force had been annihilated on the opening day of the war, and the SAMs only lasted so long.

The infantry slowly crawled out of the underbrush near the path, untouched physically but deeply morale-wise. The non-stop bombing campaign was the Yugo trump card, the thing that had let them push this far into north Greece. The General of the Air Force had resigned, essentially there was no more air force. All of Greece was being slowly ripped apart, mainly by the Yugo bombing.

The corporal that was now in charge of the fire team ordered them to move out. The HQ for the company was straight ahead along the path, another mile. Three hours later the corporal was sitting in the noncom tent, drinking beer and making up guard lists for the night. One tent over, the company's commander, a first lieutenant, stared at the map. Things looked grim. The annihilation of I Corps had seriously damaged the strategic position. III Corps was being bled white by the continuous air attacks, and after that, who knew what was there to replace them? This company was the last thing in the way before the Yugos hit Ioannina, the major city in Epirus.

...At least, that was what he was told. Rumors were coming of a resurgent Greek troop deployment, a counterattack that would carry all the way to Skopje, a new Air Force, and development of nuclear weapons to smash the frontlines of the Yugos. Most, if not all, of these were untrue, but the Lieutenant knew that he had to hold this ground. It appeared as if the extreme left flank of the company was weaker than the rest. That was where the new replacement fire team would go.

The corporal in charge of Fire Team Chi would be informed of his orders tomorrow.

Harper Government falls!

It has hardly been a year since Stephen Harper, and the Conservative party was handed a slim majority by Canadians, but it did not last long. Ever since Harper put together his party, a union of the former Progressive Conservative and Alliance Parties, it has been a shaky and unstable union, with the Progressive Conservatives and Alliance supporters bitterly fighting over the direction of the party, such as Same-sex Marriage, Abortion, and a host of other such issues.

Ever since they got elected 11 months ago, after the damning report by the Gomery Commission into the Auberge Grande Mere scandal was released, and caused the Liberals to plummet in the polls. The election yielded in the Conservatives garnering 152 of the 301 seats, a bare-bone thin majority. The left-wing NDP picked up an astonishing 98 seats, the Liberals clung on to 47 seats, with the Green party astonishing the country by getting 4 seats, 3 in BC and one in Ontario. Even with the bickering and the obvious discord in the Conservatives, they managed to squeak through with a slim majority. However, the first thing that the Conservatives did was to declare the previously passed Same-sex Marriage Bill notwithstanding, effectively nullifying its powers. This stirred up a real hornet's nest in Canada, with condemnations, protests, and the like. The Supreme Court overturned the decision, calling it “unConstitutional”, so Mr Harper launched a counterlawsuit to the Supreme Court, and things, as we know, got very sticky. Currently, Same-sex Marriages are legal in the country, but Mr Harper is still challenging the ruling.

The second controversial item that Mr Harper did was to declare Abortions illegal. That caused about 700,000 people to take to the streets protesting, and popular opinion for the Conservatives plummeted. The anti-Abortion Bill barely passed Parliament. Those 2 actions by Mr Harper, along with some controversial comments that he made, and his decision to back out of the Kyoto Project, has riled the nation. How Mr Harper clung on all these months is hard to understand, but, today, the Conservatives finally schismed. 65 Conservatives left the party, all sitting as Independents for the time being. This prompted Jack Layton of the NDP to call a Confidence motion, and it was determined that no confidence was held in the Government of Stephen Harper. Elections have been set for 30 says from today.

The big question is what will be the shape of the parties. Currently all those 65 Conservative MPs are Independents. Will they form a new party? Will they bring the Progressive Conservative or Reform Parties back to life? Time can only tell.

2 days later . . .

Social Democratic Party founded!

Only 2 days into this Election Campaign, and a new party has emerged, one that will forever alter the Canadian Political Landscape. The Social Democratic Party, or the SDP for short, was founded today, and a platform was released. This is a left-wing party, combining the former Liberals, and the 65 MPs who left the Conservatives. Their leader is Belinda Stronach, the popular Ontario MP, who is Jewish, and the daughter of Frank Stronach, Founder and CEO of Manga Incorporated, the multi-Billion auto parts company. Belinda ran the company for 3 years while her father was battling prostate cancer, and was very successful at it, always delivering a healthy surplus.

The deputy leader is Anne MacLellan, the former Vice President under the short-lived Martin Governemnt. Pundits are surprised that the second top job didn't go to Martin, but many speculate that is because they want to distance themselves as far as possible from the Liberals.

The platform for the new SDP is one of Reform, Reform, and more Reform. They are pledging to restore the Monarchy of the United Kingdom as the ceremonial Head of State, have a fully elected senate, introduce some sweeping changes to Auditor General's Official, including Lieutenant Auditors in every Department, and undoing some of what the Conservatives did on the social front. They are promising new streamlined rules for immigrants, who face up to 5 year waits just to enter the country, and to relax some other immigration rules. They are also promising to introduce Bills to re-affirm that both Same-sex Marriage and Abortions are legal in this country. On the Environment front, they are promising to meet and exceed the Kyoto Plan, and obviously re-instate it. They will look into green technologies, and look at getting rid of Canada's large network of high-polluting Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas Power Plants.

Pundits are expecting the SDP to win the election. They say that the NDP is considered too left-wing, and the Conservatives, well, they are expected to sink like a stone. No Public Opinion Polls are out yet, but most expect the new SDP to pick up traditional Liberal support, and take away from the NDP's support. On the far left, the Green, they are expected to get at least 7 seats, hold on to the ones they have in BC, and pick up some more in the lower Fraser Valley area, and perhaps one or 2 in the fairly liberal Ontario. We will keep you informed as this election campaign progresses.

Greek PM Resigns, New PM Friendly to Turkey

AN UNDISCLOSED LOCATION IN GREECE: The prime minister of Greece, Michael Melas, resigned today over allegations that he had mismanaged the defense of Greece against the Yugoslav invasion. Melas had presided over a period that had been full of promise for the next few years, but was interrupted by the brutal Yugoslav attack, and the bombing campaign that is still tearing apart the armed forces. He was no wartime PM, though, and most Greeks are surprised it took this long to oust him.

His successor is one Spiridon Kyriakides, a typical conservative PM that served in the army before going into politics. The new PM has already extended a friendly hand to the Turks, unlike generations of previous heads of state. In his remarks to the press, he noted that Greece and Turkey should start acting like neighbors, rather than the barely veiled hostility of the 20th century. He also called for continued resistance to the invading Yugoslavs.

Kyriakides is evidently bent on good relations with the Turks, even against the opposition of half of the government. Some of the Conservative leaders have stood behind him, but he still needs to try to form some sort of coalition government if he wants to be even remotely successful in his proposed good relations with Turkey. Liberal leaders have shown much opposition to any Conservative moves, so his job will be difficult at best (OOC: Quite an understatement!).

Once thursday is cleared I will have a lot more time.

To President Al Gore,

Belinda Stronach is not the Prime Minister of Canada. Currently, the Prime Minister of Canada is I, Stephen Harper, and that shall remain until Canadians decide, in about 20 days time, to keep me as Prime Minister, or select someone else. Currently, Belinda Stronach is the leader of the SDP, the Opposition Party. I trust that your statement was made in error, and not an endorsement of any political party.

Yours Truly,
Stephen Harper,
Prime Minister of Canada.

OOC - Sheep, I clearly said that the election was called, not decided. Harper is still the Prime Minister. Ya, so Belinda's going to win, because she is the only politician that I feel IRL is good enough to be PM of this country, but she has not won YET!

OOC: Ohhhh...USA screws up diplomatically...like we haven't seen that before...

Then it is done. May we continue to be such friends far into the future.

SDP takes the lead as election draws to a close!

As the 2006 Canadian Election draws to a close, a clear winner has emerged – the newly founded SDP. This Socialist Party, combined of many defectors from the Harper Conservative Party, and the Liberal Party, has been achieving success by promising to take back many of the unpopular things that the Conservatives did, as well as many more environmental changes.

Here are the results of the most recent Public Opinion Poll:
  • Party - %
  • SDP – 54%
  • NDP – 17%
  • Greens – 20%
  • Conservatives – 8%

As we can see, the SDP looks like the clear winner, especially since the Greens and NDP as expected to split a lot of votes. The SDP looks poised to sweep the Maritimes and Ontario, and get many seats in BC. The Conservatives will cling on to many seats in Alberta, where they are strong. The NDP and Greens will get a lot in the other Prairie Provinces, and especially BC. In fact, BC is THE battleground for the Greens and the NDP, where they are almost equal in support. Other smaller parties, Communist, Fascist, Religious, generally regarded as Fringe parties, do not look poised to win any seats. In the previous election, the Communists came surprisingly close in one BC riding, but their support has evaporated.

This election has been a lot of hammering at the Conservatives. Harper has come under fire by all sides. His anti-Abortion stance has come back to haunt him, with him being dogged by pro-Abortion supports at every stop. Abortion groups have also attacked his position. A poll shows about 70% of Canadians support Abortion, and only about 10% oppose it. The Same-sex Marriage opposition by Harper has also not helped him, and the SDP has successfully portrayed him as a radical. The NDP and Greens, on the other hand, have been battling for the left-wing seats. The NDP is portraying themselves as a fairly left-wing party, a position which pundits say might hurt them, while the Greens have been portraying themselves as a more centrist party, and they have released a platform which does involve many Green initiatives, but the days when they publicly called for a Green Revolution are long gone. Their leader is Tom Walsh, who is the popular NDP Premier of BC for 5 years, before he jumped to the Federal Arena. Jack Layton of the NDP is popular in Toronto, from his City Council days.

The election is a mere 3 days away, and, while most do not expect the public to change their mind radically, this election is not yet decided. We will keep you updated.

SDP wins the 2006 Election!

It was expected by most observers, and it happened. Canadians gave the SDP a mandate to be their Government for the next 5 years. Well, under the political system of Canada, for up to 5 years. The SDP swept to victory with 52% of the popular vote, and 159 seats in the House of Commons. This is not an overwhelming victory for them, but a victory nevertheless. Their main power base was the Liberal Red Fortress of Ontario, where they took almost all of the 100 seats, leaving 5 for the NDP and Greens to share. Here, for the record, is the final results:

  • Party - % Vote – Seats ( /301)
  • SDP – 52 – 159
  • Greens – 28 - 80
  • NDP – 17 – 55
  • Conservatives – 3% - 7

As this shows, the SDP, formed only about 30 days earlier, has swept to victory, making their leader, Belinda Stronach, the second female Prime Minister in Canadian History, after the short-lived reign of Kim Campbell, during the dying days of the Mulroney Administration. But, even more so, Stronach is the first Jewish prime Minister, and the first Female Jewish Prime Minister. Some speculate this might mean much closer relations with Israel, but others doubt that, given her pacifism.

The most remarkable thing about these results is the strength of the Green Party. They swept to an astonishing victory, with 80 seats, forming the official opposition. This party, directly based on the Green Parties in Europe, has achieved unprecedented success only 10 years after being founded. This rise is even faster then the Reform Party, founded in 1990, who achieved Official Opposition status 3 elections after being founded. It took just 2 for the Greens. The collapse of the Conservatives has meant that supporters of the Conservatives have mostly either not voted, or support the SDP. Former Liberal supporters support the SDP as well. But, a lot of Liberal support has bled to the NDP and Greens.

The most remarkable thing about this election has been the rapid downfall of the Conservatives. The “Unite the Right” movement has seemed to completely fail, as the Conservatives are now a party beset by political infighting between former Progressive Conservatives and Alliance members. It was the weakness within the Conservatives that helped the SDP get such a majority. Now all focus turns to Belinda Stronach, and to see what she will do to lead the nation.

To The Kingdom of Greece

In relation to your message, the US President, Al Gore has heard your plight and has introduced a resolution into NATO that is expected to pass. Until then we will be enacting a unilateral blockade of Yugoslavia in response to their unwarranted aggression.

To the Yugoslavian Empire
From the United States of America

Up until this moment we have had nothing but cordial relations and we indeed hope that these shall return, however your unprovoked and unwarranted invasion of the democratic Greek Kingdom is unreasonable and thus we have ordered the US 2nd Fleet to blockade your nation.

The next step is a resolution that has been introduced into NATO. If passed this will mean NATO as a whole will declare war upon your state.

I am now telling you this, because I feel that your leadership has made an error and thus can be persuaded to withdraw and offer a small reperation payment for long lasting peace.

The consquences will be dire if you continue with this invasion.

Yugoslavia is a FEDERATION.

From: SFJP
To: USA

Whilst I and my people disapprove of the Yugoslavian invasion of Greece, I believe that if United States of America intervenne in the conflict it will set bad precedent. I think that it is a matter between Greece and Yugoslavia - diplomatic intermediation should be undertaken, but definitely not military action.

I also remind you that, as Yugoslavia is a Russian ally, military actions against it will probably worsen the relations between two leading powers of the world. And that would ruin all hopes of our little nation for a peaceful era.

I beg of you - DO NOT INTERVENNE MILITARILY.
