Controversy erupts over President's pledge for 2 Tier Healthcare
The minute after President Gilles Duceppe uttered the phrase 2 Tier healthcare during his Independence Day Speech, controversy erupted. Everybody except for Duceppe and his top Advisors were caught off guard by this, and the condemnations and outrage has been building ever since. Duceppe's Liberals have come under stining attacks and rebuke by all sides, the Conservatives being the lone voice demanding that they go through with their pledge, and ignore the left, and the left, the Socialists and Communists, viciously attacking Duceppe for the "erosion of Medicare as Quebecers know it". The Socialists have launched vicious attacks on the Radio and TV, roundly condemning the Liberals and Duceppe for this "catastrophe", as they see it. 16 Liberal MNAs have defected from the Liberals, 15 of them joining the Socialists, one joining the Communists, and more threaten to. Under the Constitution, Duceppe will remain President for 1 more year, until his term ends, but the last year might be when he cannot get anything done, if the Socialists gain control of the National Assembly. Duceppe has set off a firestorm, and he is being roundly condemned by everybody, including many members of his Liberal Party. His announcements about Education, Immigration, and La Francophonie are being majorly overshadowed by this announcement, and it looks like Duceppe's career has come to a screeching halt. The Liberals dropped by 12% in the polls immediately, with 9 of that going to the Socialists, and 3 to the Communists. Polls done show over 2/3rds of Quebecers want a fully-funded Universal Public Healthcare system, with no private clinics, and yet Duceppe refuses to back down. The Liberals are currently at 41% in the polls, and have yet to reach bottom. The Socialists are at 30%, a record for them in the past 8 years. The Communists are also at a record 22%, and the Conservatives and other smallewr parties have a mere 7%. With more then a year to go, it seems that the Socialists will win, or at least enough for a joint Socialist-Communist coalition. The Liberals, it seems, have little to no chance of being elected next election.
Critics herald other parts of Duceppe's Speech on Education, Immigration, Economy
The news is not all bad for Duceppe, however. Critics are heralding his proposals and pledges for Education, Immigration, the Economy, Police, and Defense. The Government did launch a new campaign to lure even more businesses and Foreign Investors to Quebec, heralding Quebec as a stable, wise choice for investment, with a healthy, robust economy, low business taxes that the Governemnt will make even lower, a world-class business loan program, and a generally good place to come and do business. Business Leaders across Quebec have been calling this campaign exactly what is needed to raise Quebec's economy even further, but there are some problems onm the horizon. Workers in Quebec are in demand, and with the unemployment rate at all time lows, there are sometimes not enough Quebecers to fill enough jobs. The Government has changed the Immigration System to try and deal with this, making it simpler and easier for those whom are qualified to come into the country and work, and has launched a campaign in several countries heralding Quebec as a safe, secure nation with a good economy, good paying jobs, and a nice place to live. This also might set off Quebec's declining population rate. Duceppe's Education Policies have also been called the cure for some of Quebec's Education Woes, with overcrowded Universities causing problems for young eager High School Graduates. Finally, Duceppe's Defense and Police proposals are gaining approval from experts, who say that a Nationalized Police Force will better protect Quebecers from Criminals and Terrorists alike, and an expanded Military will make it easier to patrol Quebec's land and water entry points, and thereby crack down on illegal entry into the country. There are those whom are opposed to the increased funding promised for the Military, saying that it will not help protect Quebec, that Quebec can only be protected from terror by not having an agressive Foreign Policy that is interventionalist and incites terror. Of course, Quebec has never had an interventionalist foreign policy. In NATO, Quebec is the resident Dove, and has been strongly against any kind of military action pretty much everywhere. Few expect that to change.
Socialists net well-known Business Leader as Finance Critic
Socialist Finance Critic Gerald Tremblay
The Socialist Party has made a major gain to their ranks, adding Gerald Tremblay as Finance Critic after he won a by-election, after a Socialist MNA stepped aside, stricken with Skin Cancer. Gerald Tremblay is former CEO of the Bank of Montreal, Magna International, an auto-parts giant based in Quebec City, and just stepped aside as Leader of the Quebec National Business Bureau. He is one of the most successful Businessmen in Quebec, if not the world, and brought the Bank of Montreal from the brink of bankruptcy to the biggest bank in Quebec, and one of the biggest in the World. Mr. Tremblay is a International Businessman who knows how Business works around the world, and he is set to become Minister of Finance if the Socialists win the next election, and he wins his Seat. He is widely respected in both the National and International Business Community, and is expected to keep Quebec's economy thundering along as its current pace if he becomes Minister of Finance. Tremblay, upon accepting the win, said that he "is not a politician who happens to be a businessman, but rather a businessman who happens to be a politician". He says that he accepted Cere's offer to run because he wants to ensure that Quebec's economic success continues.
Duceppe proposes Free French Lessons for all
Gilles Duceppe in the National Assembly laying out his proposal
Gilles Duceppe is set to go down in the History Books as the President who not only made Quebec an International Powerhouse economically, but also as the politician who has done the most to preserve and enhance Quebec and French Language and Culture. Duceppe today announced plans to offer French Lessons for free to all Quebec citizens, and to all immigrants. The program will not come into place quite yet, he says, because of a lack of money in the Education system for the project, but will be in place within a couple years. Critics are saying that this will ensure that everybody can know the official language of Quebec, and are suggesting that this be proposed to La Francophonie as well. Duceppe says "wait and see".
