Election announces as Socialists overtake Liberals in polls!

Liberal President Gilles Duceppe has announced today that an election will be held in 2 months time, which gives all sides plenty of time for campaigning. He made this announcement a mere 3 days before he had to make it, Constitutionally, which suggests to many that he was trying to increase support for his party before an election, but ran out of time. The Liberals are sinking in the polls, as the Socialists, led by the charismatic Paul Cere advance, and have barely overtaken them. The Socialists have the support of 42% of Quebecers, the Liberals 41%, the Communists 12%, they got into double digits, for the first time, 1 month ago, and the Conservatives have swunk to an all time low of 5%, a humiliation for the party which was once so dominant. The Socialists have already started campaigning, hammering the Liberals fiercely and without stop on the issues of Healthcare and Education, and pledging to maintain Quebec's Economic Prosperity while spending more in Social Programs. The Communists are campaigning for a Quebec Second Republic, which, as they propose, would be DemoCommunist, with elections to choose the Leadership and the National Assembly, to be renamed the People's Assembly under their plan, and a Communist system of delivering Social Services and the such which would make Quebec a truly equal society. Since the Communists have toned down and virtually eliminated their previous calls for a "Peaceful Worker's Revolution", which undoubtably raised eyebrows in Ottawa and Washington, and are now promoting a "Modern, Democratic, Reasonable" brand of Communism, their popular support has gone up. The Liberals have been campaigning on their past, and pledging to continue investing in the economy, and have been attacking the Socialists and Communists, saying they would devastate Quebec's economy. The Conservatives have been pushing for a greatly expanded Military, and to increase Internationalism in Quebec, which is quite isolationist. Quebecers, they argue, should be helping their Democratic Allies against the evils of Communism, like in South America against Argentina. Needless to say, this has not resonated with Quebecers.

Commission reccomends Public Healthcare

This is yet another blow to the ruling Liberals, and the timing could hardly be worse. A Presidential Commission on the Future of Healthcare in Quebec has just reported in, and their findings are devastating. Duceppe initiated this Commission to report on what Healthcareshould be, according to the panel of doctors and experts. Their findings were overwhelmingly that Healthcare should be Public, and only Public, in Quebec, This runs contrary to Duceppe's claims of a Public-Private system would be best for Quebec, and has led to him and his party dropping further in the polls. Meantime, another prominent Liberal has jumped ship to the Socialists, this time is it Jean Chretien, once considered a Duceppe loyalist, and the longtime Liberal Minister of Justice and Northern Affairs. Chretien claimed that Duceppe's and the Liberal's view on Healthcare run contrary to his own. All of these events make the election more and more likely to go to the Socialists.

Cere promises Democratic Reform if elected

Cere and the Socialists have come out with more of their platform, and this part is certainly to be very appealing to many Quebecers. They are promising to implement some Democratic Reform. Specifically, an elected Senate, Supreme Court, Solicitor, Auditor and Surgeon Generals, and expanding the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms to include protection of Private Property. Many have been calling for these type of changes, and Cere has even mused out loud about some kind of Proportional Representation instead of the current First Past the Post system for electing MNA, but no concrete promises on that yet. Many Quebecers have long been frusterated by the Supreme Court and Senate not being elected. Currently, the President appoints members to both, with the consent of Parliament, which he usually gets. Both Senators and Supreme Court Judges serve for life, which means that the current Supreme Court is filled with Conservative, right-wingers whom don't represent the feelings of Quebecers.

International Journalist Association finds Quebec Daily News "left-wing"

The International Journalists Association, responsible for maintaining ethics of Journalism around the world, has released its report on bias in newspapers, and it finds that this paper, the Quebec Daily News, to be "left of center". But, it also finds it to be "average for newspapers in Quebec, which are traditionally left of center". The Quebec Daily News tries to achieve a harmony of reporting the truth, and being unbiased.

Canadian Serial Killer/Rapist denied entry into Quebec

In what was a surprise move by Karla Homolka, the Scarborough Serial Killer/Rapist who, along with her Husband, Paul Bernardo, raped 8 in Scarborough and killed 3, as applied to live in Quebec. Homolka was sentenced to 15 years in jail, after a highly controversial plea bargain, and Bernardo got Life in Prison. Homolka was recently released, and applied to move to Quebec, where they wanted to live with some Family Members. Immigration Officials recently announced that they have refused her application on "reasonabloe grounds" that she will re-offend, and "pose a threat to Quebecers". No comment from Homolka was available.

Duceppe invokes notwithstanding clause over Same-sex Marriage Decision!

It was a remarkable series of events which led to this event, and it has outraged Quebecers. The Supreme Court of Quebec announced a long-awaited decision on Same-sex marriage, 5 days before the National Assembly was officially disbanded, and campaigning actually began. The Supreme Court said, according to the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, defining marriage as only between a man and a women was illegal, thereby changing the definition of marriage in Quebec to "between 2 persons". In all but 2 of Quebec's 50 Counties, Marriage is between 2 persons, and pressure had been building on Duceppe to make it legal across Quebec. But he did just the opposite, he invoked the notwithstanding clause in the Constitution, for the first time in Quebec history, which essentially nullifies the Court's ruling. His reasoning was that this issue needed to be decided by the people of Quebec and the National Assembly of Quebec, after some debate over the issue. He promised, if elected, that he would ensure that a proper debate was held about the issue, and the National Assembly would have a free vote on the issue. But that is not the way Quebecers say it. The Socialists and Communists immediately pounced on the Liberals, decrying them for "denying Human Rights granted by the Courts to Quebecers", and attacking them at every turn. Support for the Liberals has plummeted to new lows as the Liberals reel from this decision. We will bring you updated polls in a moment, but the Socialists are ahead, and the Liberals seem to be hemorraging support. Duceppe has been on record as saying that Marriage should be kept as it traditionally has been, between a man and a women, but Civil Unions should be between 2 persons. The Socialists and Communists have unrelentenly attacked Duceppe for these comments, and they are bleeding him of his supporters.

Polls show Socialists, Communists leap ahead

After the notwithstanding clause was implemented, pollsters scrambledc to get new and accurate polls of how Quebecers are feeling about their political parties. The choice could not have been more clear. They were soundly rejecting the Liberals and the once popular Gilles Duceppe for the Socialists and the Communists. The Socialists are at 58%, unprecendented for their party, the Communists are at 17%, the Liberals have sunk to 15%, and the Conservatives and smaller parties have the rest. The Socialists seem set to make a major breakthrough, and form the next Government. The race is between the Communists and the Liberals as to whom will form the Official Opposition. Some suggest the Communists, with their power base in some ridings in Quebec City, will probably do so. Others think that the Liberals, with their power base in the more numberour small town and rural areas, will do so. The race is on, stay tuned in about 15 days to see the result.

Debates turn into Duceppe-bashing events

The 3 Presidential Debates held in Quebec have been widely acclaimed as sealing the fate of Duceppe. All 3 candidates used the oppurtunities to slam Duceppe on his Healthcare and Same-sex Marriage stands, and Educaation, and Social Programs. Duceppe tried to defend himself by saying that the Liberals were building Quebec's economy so they could later invest in Social Programs, but Cere stopped him short by pointing out that later is too late, people need the funding for Social Programs now, not later. The 3 debates, 2 French one English, have essentially sealed Duceppe's fate. The liberals will badly lose the next election. The polls have consistently shown that the Liberals have fallen behind the Communists for third place. The only question is how big will Cere's victory be in the National Assembly?

Leaders give their final addresses before Quebecers go to the polls

As is tradition with the Quebec Daily News, we print for you the final statements of the Leaders of the main parties before Quebecers go to the polls. So here are the final speeches from the 4 parties, and then the results of the election.

Paul Cere, Leader of the Socialist Party

Good Evening my Fellow Quebecers,

Tomorrow you will go to the polls to decide upon the next party to govern the Quebec First Republic for the next 5 years. But you will decide much more then just that. You will decide the future firection and the future path of Quebec. You will decide which direction Quebec goes in. And the choices couldn't be more clear.

We have the Liberals, who have built up our economy on the backs of your Healthcare system, and Education system, eroding them significantly. They have eroded your human rights, and not allowed the Supreme Court to fully interpret the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They promise to invest in Social programs, but how do Bankers and Lawyers who compose the Liberals know how to make Quebec's Social System work better? They do not. Voting liberal will be 5 more years of the same.

Then we have the Communists. They are arguing for a Quebec Second Republic, in which we will keep our tradition of Democracy coupled with a Communist Social System. They have been long-worded, and short on details. Their plan has gaps the size of Montreal which they have not explained. Their views and opinions on the major issues is sketchy at best. The Communists simply do not have a coherent plan to become Leader.

Finally, there is the Socialists. We will use Quebec's surging economy to invest in your Social Programs. We will strengthen and properly invest in Healthcare and Education to ensure that they are properly funded, and that Quebecers get the Healthcare and Education that they need. I have proposed a list of propose MNAs to Quebecers, composed of healthcare experts, teachers, lawyers, and businessmen. We have men like Gerald Tremblay and Paul Martin, 2 respected business leaders, to ensure that our economy remains strong, and doctors and teachers to ensure that we properly invest in Social Programs. We are the only party offering any kind of much-needed democratic reform. The choices couldn't be more clear between us and our opponents. Make the Right Choice on March 5th. Make the Socialist Choice.

Thank you and good night.

Gilles Duceppe, leader of the Quebec Liberal Party

Good Evening Quebecers,

The Liberals have a long history of focussing on the economy. Our Economy is the lifeblood of our nation and our way of life. The Liberals have worked tirelessly to ensure that we are investing in our economy. The Liberal plan called for an improved economy, and then investment in our Social Programs. You elected us to start that plan, now we need the mandate to finish it. We will be investing in our important Social Programs over the next 5 years to ensure that they remain strong and vital. That is our mandate.

We have been attacked over the Same-sex Marriage decision. I invoked that clause because Quebecers need to have the oppurtunity to have a full debate on the issue before we decide how we should proceed with it. Marriage is one of our most beloved and cherished institutions, and changing it needs some deep and reflective thought.

The Liberals have strengthened your Police, Military, Cultural Programs, and economy. The Liberal Plan calls for us to strengthen our Social Programs, and this we will do. You know our plan, and you know our proposals. Vote Liberal.

Thank you.

Diane Bourgeois, Leader of the Communist Bloq of Quebec

Good Evening Comarades, and Workers of Quebec,

The Communist Bloq has offered a clear alternative to the unequal society we have today. We see poor people in the streets, starving, as compared to the rich businessmen with their lavish lifestyles. This is a very unequal society we have, but the Communists will change that. We have proposed the most innovative solution out of any of the parties in this race for the future of Quebec. They proposed throwing money at our Social Programs, and hope that does the job.

That is not a solution. Throwing money at a problem does not properly and fundamentally solve it. What will solve the woes in our Pension, Healthcare and Education Systems is the Quebec Second Republic. We have been proposing this throughout this campaign, and it is the only solution for this society. We proposed a sensible, modern, and democratic Worker's Revolution. The Communists Bloq is not preaching the corrupted version of Communism as was seem in the USSR and China, but a pure, version of Communism as it was meant to be by the great thinkers Lenin and Marx.

That is DemoCommunism. That is a Democratic system of electing leaders inside of a Communist system of running the country. Quebec would be transformed into the only truly fair and equal society on the continent, and in the world. Everybody would be equal under the law. All would have equal access to health, education, and money. It would not be like the system we have today, where the rich live off of the backs of the poor. On March 5th, vote for the only party preaching a totally equal society. Vote Communist Bloq.

Thank you, and Vive la Republique du Quebec Libre!

Jean-Yves Roy, leader of the National Alliance

Good Evening,

This election has been an interesting one. Never before have the Communists and the Socialists, but especially the Communists, have had so much power and influence. Never before have 2 parties wanted to destroy our grand nation.

Quebec is under attack by the force of the left. The National Alliance will correct this., We will make Quebec strong, militarily and Economically. We will end the isolationism strangling our fair land, and return to our rightful place in the world - alongside the forces of Democracy. We will fight the evil that is Communism the world over, whether it be with Brazil against Argentina, or in other parts of the world.

Quebec will be a safe and secure nation with a National Alliance Government. Vote for the right choice. Vote National Alliance.

Thank you.

Socialists sweep to victory in 2006 election!

As the final results come in, they could not be clearer. Quebecers have chosen the Socialists, giving them a strong mandate in the National Assembly. However, it was also an historic win for the Communists, who finish much stronger then everybody though. They swept many ridings in Quebec City, while the Socialists took Montreal and many smaller cities and towns. The Liberals have been horribly defeated. Even Gilles Duceppe lost his seat, while all other leaders won theirs, Cere by a landslide. Quebecers have spoken loudly and clearly for the Socialists. Now that they have won, it is time to see what Paul Cere has in store for Quebec. Here, for the record, as the results of the 2006 election in the Quebec First Republic:

  • Party Name - Seats ( /250)
  • Socialists - 152
  • Communists - 84
  • Liberals - 10
  • Conservatives - 4

TO HUNGARY
FROM GERMANY

We demand an explanation for the invasion of Romania, as will our European Union allies.

We also hear of ill-treatment of our Austrian cousins which is causing them to desire unification with Germany. This had better not be the case.

If the Austrians do desire freedom, we would wish to open negotiations to secure their independence or even Anschluss with Germany. Germany is a rich and powerful nation, and we are willing to negotiate you a fair deal.

I just hope you don't turn out to be a warmongering tyrant on both these issues...

Otto von Bismarck

Sigh, remember what happened the last time Germans got Austria... In 1933, that is. That's right, they used it as a platform for their reckless invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, invasions that started WWII.

Nice stories Goober, but...

Communism as was seem in the USSR and China

There was no USSR, in fact Russia is one of the most far-right countries of the world here, and China never was communist.
That is a Democratic system of electing leaders inside of a Communist system of running the country.

Well, ideologically the Communist government IS supposed to be democratic. Soviet CONSTITUION was one of the most liberal ones in the world politically. De facto, ofcourse, it was (and is in this world) rather different.

(oc) Heeey... Das/Stormbringer/random Russian NES'r? How do you kill/work it around all the democratic leaders in Russia and gain the absolute loyal of the military and become the next Stalin without doing it slowly and carefully like Putin (sort of, sorry 'bout the comment about dear Putin if ya happens to like him as so many Russians do, right?). I mean... just hypothetically speaking? Maybe I should calm down and make a project... yeshhh... errr if I wanted to that is. Not to bother or any thing.. but do anyone around here have any ideas about how to off a whole leadership and assume the reigns of tyranny? If I wanted to switch to France and be crazy that is. I'm not going to be crazy. Really. I just want to lead my country without a load of biz-natch Duma biatches peeking over my shoulders!

I'm not helping myself am I? Ahhh whatever, I've been sane with Russia so far and it'll stay that way. Actions speak louder then words.
But please, if anyone knows anything special... Silver (oh wait I can't ask you) Sheep, Fantasmo... any closet-maniac who likes coups... please PM me. =^_^=
for hypothetical coups in future NES's of course :)

Toteone do everyone a favour and read the background history.

I'm not doing the world a favor, but meh. Toteone, declare a state of emergency and martial law, make a nice, snappy speech about Russia's victory in WWII being made possible by strong, determined, united leadership and start a War on Terror, but not with halfway measures of Bush - rather, with a complete, unlimited power being concentrated in the Regent, with the Duma reduced for the time of "emergency" (make sure not to give it any constraining definition) to the position of an advisory board.

Go read what happened to Russia over the last few updates in Goober's NES and you will know.

TO SOUTH AFRICA
FROM GERMANY

You would do well to keep your opinions to yourself. Germany is now a completely democratic country, and if you look at the European Union Council's records, you will see that Germany has stated she will support Austrian independence or Anschluss, on Austria's terms - she can have a completely free independent referendum to decide this.

South Africa is the closest nation to the Nazis as you can get at the moment, with your appalling civil rights abuses towards black Africans.

So "pot calling the kettle black" would apply if your accusations were true, but they are unfounded, as Germany is a peaceful, democratic nation, and has joined the European Union to prove this. So actually, "be quiet before we point out what you're up to" would be a much more appropriate reply to your outburst.
