Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Well while we're waiting for Dragonborn might as well roll a new character. I'm thinking a spellsword or nightblade. Maybe a Breton with Illusion, Destruction, Conjuration, One Handed, Sneak and either Light Armor or maybe Enchanting or Alchemy?

I've heard that Bretons would be good with magic stuff... so yes, I guess?

In preparation for Dragonborn (and also because my old save would have probably crashed from all the mods I was using, mods of which were not updated to 1.08), I decided to do yet another good old Imperial battlemage/spellsword. Somewhat impractical in terms of min-maxing, but I don't give a @#$% about that. It's nice playing a couple of mods that make the game surprisingly much more difficult despite their minimal tweaking (I don't like big honking mods).

I'm still not 100% sure what a 'spellsword' actually is :p Mage mercenary? I really ought to read the class descriptions in the old games (classes being unneeded for Skyrim and all).

Why not all of the above? As long as it makes sense for the character, go for it :)

Skyrim has leveled lists though, so as a low level character you only face opponents on par with you, and get loots appropriate to your level. Easy enough to get rid of level lists with mods so not a big deal.

We PCers are going to have to wait till 2013 for Dragonborn. I saw a video of a dude with an Xbox360 riding a dragon. I hate him.

That's only partially true. You face opponents on part with you but some enemies and dungeons are preset with certain enemies so it is possible (and if you got back to the beginning of this thread you'll see) to accidentally wander into a dungeon "you weren't really supposed to be in yet" and get your ass royally mauled for several hours.

Either way it beats the hell out of Oblivion's level scaling; having an easy go at everything and then finding out at level 10 that you didn't develop your character correctly when the game suddenly becomes Nintendo hard.

Agree with this. Skyrim leveling, though still not the best, is much more intuitive than Oblivion, where I gave up trying to micromanage my skills and attributes since it was ruining my immersion that I couldn't do X skill until I leveled just so I could level right. Some fans may not have liked the streamlining, but I think it was for the better. Makes it easier to focus on roleplaying and getting immersed rather than micromanaging some numbers.

Spellswords stereotypically fight with a sword in the right hand and a destruction spell in the left. However, despite how fun that sounds, Bethesda made it so fighting in such a manner is incredibly impractical. It's just as flexible to switch between two fireballs and two swords 95% of the time, and flexibility is half my friggin strategy.

I miss atributes, mainly because I'm a crit-stacking bastard. I don't miss the rest of the system. Skyrim's is great for the game it is, while Oblivion's was just copypasted from Morrowind (which would've suffered under Skyrim's system).

Crit-stacking = powergamer?

Go fight a giant then.

Easy! :p I sit on some boulders where he can't reach me and pepper him with arrows or bolts until he dies.

That would explain the Sightless Pit.

Only when it comes to critical hits. Really not an issue in Skyrim, though, because crits do such pissy damage.

If I was a powergamer, I'd just say powergamer. Even if you could optimize in Skyrim, my character would still be a jack-of-all.

I like Skyrim more than the previous games because it takes a lot of "meta" aspects out of the equation as far as leveling and optimizing are concerned, IMO. The only problem is that a lot of features were cut, when they could have easily been redesigned to complement the system we ended up with.

What enchantments should I be using on my sorta stealthy archer? And what should I give my housecarl? I don't yet have the skill to put 2 enchantments on anything yet

Probably buffs to illusion, sneak, and archery. Maybe extra stamina or feather so you can carry more crap. I like having extra magicka regen but I have no idea if it actually works like it's supposed to.

Enchant the bow to do extra (fire/frost/shock/cancer) damage. As s stealth archer your goal should be to take dudes out with one hit.

Has anyone here bought and started Dragonborn yet? I heard the reviews were good, or at least much better than Dawnguard.

Same here.

That does make me wonder - does anyone here play Skyrim on Xbox or PS3?

I do. I may buy Dragonborn when I get back to the states. That won't be until January though haha

I have a copy for my PS3, but I really don't use it that often.
