Snow Day in NY!

Don't really like snow, aside from the possibility that you can stay at home. It can be romantic and all that, but I don't really think it's very romantic when 20 people get killed.

@napoleon: did they really close school because you got half a foot of snow? I mean half a foot isn't reallly that much, is it.
Actually, by the time it stopped this afternoon, it had accumulated to about 12 inches.

Maryland has quite a variety of strange meteorological characteristics. The Appalaccian mountains and the Chesapeake bay shield us from direct hot and cold weather, but they also trap storms in the area. The past few winters we've been hammered by serious blizzards. The climate is such that we get really hot summers (95+ degrees) and cold winters, most of the time. The problem is that we don't have snow constantly over the summer, like North Dakota or Montana. Thus, our snow plow brigade(or whatever they call it) is usually not equipped to deal with large storms. Another problem is that in the afternoon snow tends to melt, then refreeze later at night.

Lucky you, getting snow. Our storm here in North Carolina started off as snow, then changed to sleet and freezing rain. Most folks here don't have power; luckily, my in-laws do, so we were able to camp out there last night (and, probably, for a few more days). It's 50 degrees at my house when I checked this morning. Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Nap526, I'd trade your foot of snow for 2 inches of ice in a minute. Snow rocks. Ice storms stink.

And yes, most schools around here closed about noon on Wednesday. The storm came through about 1, and lots of folks complained that the schools should have closed for the whole day Wednesday. The last time they did that (that is, close schools because of the threat of snow and ice), nothing happened, and people complained about that, too. There's no making some folks happy.

It was 20 degrees below zero the day before yesterday. And no-one seems to be surprised at seeing lots of snow. ;)

That's strange. My dad grew up in Buffalo and he says they get LOADS of snow. Sometimes FEET of snow. Anyway, I wish we had more snow over here.

Buffalo is right next to the Great Lakes which create a whole bunch of weather that the rest of New York state doesn't get. Thankfully, as by late February the snow banks are usually higher than the traffic signals.

Around two weeks after I moved from the Canadian praries to the American desert, in November, it snowed. Some people were saying that they hadn't seen snow in 20 years. I wasn't quite as excited about as they were. Of course it only lasted for a few minutes, and it turned immediately to slush, but still ... I moved here to get away from that stuff. :ack:

Snow is Great! My Labrador Retriever loves it! And we dont get enough in the Southern Midwest, USA, wish I was back in Wisconsin! Ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, I cant get enough snow!:crazyeye:

Makes things a bit slippery, and I had to pay a kid to shovel the driveway, but I still like it.

It is so rare we get any real snow fall in the city.

Here in Knoxville, TN, it snowed everywhere around us, but not here. Maybe were cursed. I do like snow. We don't see it alot down here. ALL OF THE SURROUNDING COUNTIES WERE OUT!! But, no, not a flake of snow here.

Heh, this morning it was that awful brown goop that gets into your socks. Snow is only good in NYC when it is still snowing. After about 12 hours, it becomes horrible and disgusting. Speaking of which, I have to go shovel the front yard right now. :(

EDIT: AoA, when you say "the city", I assume you mean NYC. In which borough do you live?

I lived on Long Island for 11 years.

I remember a few winters with lots of snow, but not too many.

For Wisconsin, 5 inches in December is light. We have that already in fact, and the temp has stayed below freezing for over a week, so is has not melted.

Last December, we had 49 inches of snow. Now thats alot!

My alley looked like WWI France, a bunch of trenches you couldnt see over.

 Oh my God! I think NYC has had that in total in the last 10 years! How do you deal with all that snow? I would just give up and let it pile up, I couldn't shovel every morning and night...

You have to shovel twice everyday, especially the front (for the benefit of mail carrier) and a path to your car (as well as digging out your car).

Last year sucked. I aggravated an old back injury and had to go to the hospitol, from shoveling.

This year, I live in an apartment. Snow removal aint my job. :D

I do park on the street though, and the plows like to block your car in with packed snow. Bastards.

 I hate snow plow people too. They always make a wide, deep wall of snow. I have to wade through it to get to the bus. If I take to long, the bus driver just leaves. I have to find already stepped in spots, walk in people's footprints. Ugh. And that black slush everywhere; do you get that in Wisconsin?

Well in South eastern Conneticut, We have about 6-8in of snow on the ground yesterday. Although I did not got a snow day, But at least the school district has gotten a early dismissal :D.

Now we finally get some snow here. Unfortunately, till now it's only about 5cm (still snowing). It will probably be gone by the morning  or worse still it'll be this brown paste, ugh

Oh well, at least for now it's white :goodjob:

I have been to many places, but NO place has the black sludge like NYC.

One day (in Manhattan) I stepped off a curb onto what looked like asphalt, but was really six inches of the black sludge.

The snow stays white here, for the most part. We dont have as many people and cars.

And so far this December, we have only had that one storm. Very little snow, so far.

However, the temperature has been single digits for the last three nights.
This morning it was 9 degrees F. Below zero with the windchill.

I hate this place...
