Soda I - Jumping to Monarch

Great reading.

Stocking the galley up to take down the archer and bag a free worker was inspired. Much better than risking a naval battle one on one, which would have gained nothing. Nice job.

Trying to save veteran catapults, though, hmm. They only had one victory each, that was nothing compared to the experience in them horses. If it was me, I'd have sacrificed all the cats to minimalise every 0.1% damage to the immortals :p Cats even have half a chance of running away, regardless of health. I regularly throw near-dead cats at cities, because the cumulative collateral damage is irrespective of initial combat results: they die, they still take a chunk off 4 enemies.

Oh well, Stuttgart has a few more turns to grow, that can only mean more cash when we next storm it.

As for waiting to bribe Hatty, check every turn. When CS isn't enough to get her to DOW on Russia, that should be about the right time. Just sweeten up the deal with a map on top.

Rrau's next?

Now I'm back, sorry it took so long. It took a while to move in, get my connection running etc. My connection still dies randomly, but it doesn't matter when playing civ :)

got it and a couple questions/comments

1) We're in an unbreakable 10 turn peace treaty with Bismark, so no war again this soon.

2) Do we really want to go to war with Cathy this soon? I don't think we have enough troops and what we do have aren't in position.

I can't remember what happened with Stuttgart. I thought I left it primed for a takeover. Wait for the end of peace to give it another go. We need the cash to fund research.

It's only being suggested to bribe Egypt to fight Russia. No need to get personally involved yet. We just want to keep Hatty and Cathy tied up until the time's right.

ya we wouldnt actually fight catherine, and by her attitude, she is lookin to attack someone soon. So best to get her involved with Hatty instead of us.

who is up?/

890 (0) Trade CS to Hatty for war with Cathy plus 40g. Trade CS to Cathy for Feudalism. Persiopolis can grow one more before becoming unhappy.

905 (1) Move troops. Increase research to 40%

920 (2)

935 (3)
IBT: Hanno born in Rome

950 (4) Lose cat vs 2 archers in Harappan (barb city)
2nd cat wins vs archer
Axe wins and captures Harappan
Increase research to 100% for one turn
IBT: Mansa is advancing 6 troops towards Essen (2 defenders)

965 (5) I pay Mansa 10 gold for peace

980 (6) Start hindu monastary in persiopolis for research boost

995 (7) Start Forge in Carib. Plan is either whip the forge and start the FP there or Whip the forge and start making troops.
IBT: Peace treaty with Germany expires

1010 (8) DOW on Germany and bombard Stuttgart.
IBT: Lose 2 workers that I thought were deep enough not to need escorts

1025 (9) Bombard Stuttgart again. Cat 1 withdraws, cats 2 & 3 die, Immortal 1 wins vs Longbow. Immortal 2 wins vs longbow and captures the town and 2 workers.

1040 (10) Not much.

NOTE: I think either Carib or Teothihuacan are good FP cities. We need to get it built sooner rather than later

Lol, that's how to use cats. Cannon fodder to make life easier for the heavy troops. Never mind about the workers, at least they were replaced. We got loads anyway.

Carib might be good enough for an FP. It's not the furthest city from the capital, but it's furthest in the general direction we're heading, i.e. Russia and eastwards (does that mean we're soon going to be at war with our friend, Hatty?)

I think once we do in Russia, Germany and Egypt, we'll hit the domination limit. Or stop research after knights, go on a rampage, but risk having to deal with barbs in the no-man's-land.

Well played. rrau! I like your move for peace with Mansu as he is approaching.

IT: give dye to catherine for 4gp/turn. give gold to mansa for 4gp/turn. we need gold!

turn 1: give sugar to ceasar for 3gp/turn. kill a german elephant. start courthouse in essen, start library in tenoch. rework some city tiles for more commerce and increase research. we really need to get research back over 50% asap! I made those deals with ai and changed carib to commerce focus and was able to go from 20% research and +2 gold/turn to 40% research and +1 /turn. This moved machinery from 21 turns to 8 turns...

turn 2: wow big decision here..hatty asks us to go to war with Catherine..I say yes. Its been a few turns now so Russia should hopefully be wittled down some, plus we are finished with our german offensive (next city is Berlin). We'll see what happens. I am not going all out offense on them as we need to work on commerce and research some.

...ok i noticed tenoch and teo were suppossed to grow this turn and they don't...someone turned on avoid growth. Both these cities can grow 5 times without hitting the happiness limit....

turn 3: wow egypt razes novingrod! starting on settler in capital maybe we can get that spot if we are lucky. kill some germans.

turn 4: nothing really, moving troops north to russia. whip the settler in capital.

turn 5: wow germany has built munich right near essen...maybe starting another war was a bad idea...although russia has its hands full we dont have to do much there. I think I'll go for munich.

turn 6: nothing much, moving troops around..germany offers peace with 140 gold but I decline. Germany and Ceasar are ahead quite a bit in tech, both already have machinery, drama, and theology.

turn 7: nothing.

turn 8: establish arbela. finish machinery and start on guilds. no one who needs machinery will trade for it unfortunately...looks like Hatty already has it.

turn 9: munich is heavily guarded, im going to pillage around it some but will let the next person decide on an attack. Russia keeps sending lone units for free xp:)

turn 10: I'm about to kill a Russian swordsman...and Russia just upgraded to macemen!! doh. I make peace with Russia, they offer 130 gold and 1 gp/turn for it. Germany didnt like units in his territory and kamikazed 4 catapults and 2 horse archers...we lose a catapult and 2 elephants.

Well we are at a bit of a crossroads, we need to focus on getting research back up or we are going to fall way behind...

also, whoever is next make sure to renegotiate the deals I made at the beginning of my turn set, see if we cna get a few more gp.

Overall I think we are in ok position with lots of land but we are lagging in research from our large army and amount of cities. With people getting macemen/crossbows and soon pikeman our army is going to be dated quickly. I would be inclined to stop warring for a bit and get on a solid tech foundation.

Nicely detailed.

Sorry in advance for deconstructing your post like this, but I had a few critiques :mischief:

I'm pretty sure the AI don't care about happy limits, they carry on growing despite useless angry citizens. So you've potentially added another citizen to each of the Russian cities for 4gpt :crazyeye: It's only monarch, though, and the deal lasted but 2 turns, so no worries. Just thought it might help by pointing that out.

On the other hand, it's good to start these deals when you can, if only for peanuts. It's like keeping money aside for the AI. After several renegotiations, it's possible to get a good deal eventually.

I didn't think we had enough units to split between 2 borders. It certainly wasn't worth declaring on Russia with nothing to gain. That's just one more neighbour who hates us, which we will have to be extra vigilant towards from now on.

We may have been lucky that Cathy didn't have anything to spare to throw at us, but you never know with her.

Ironically, that cash would have let us run higher research with a deficit in order to catch up :p Especially while we had another war going on.

Obviously, noone could have seen that coming, but it shows what happens when you spread yourself thin. Bismarck can afford to lose the units, we can't; he's not going to win the game, we are :D

Unless we're going for space victory, it's no big deal. Elephants and maces kick ass. Even if we have to face knights before we build our own, they are no match for elephants. Longbows are tricky to get past, just throw some disposable catapults at them to soften them up first.

VeryApe, you still online in your new house?

I'd just like to say thanks once again for letting me participate here. I've learned a ton and even this: When one puts on the "stop growth" icon on the city screen, even if the city is one turn away from growing: It does not grow! That might be funny but I just learned that tonight from my own personal games. I always thought it did its best to stop growth and that growth and such were automatic with the other numbers on the city screen no matter what---I was wrong.

I had one question tonight but did not write it down. For now on I'm going to write them down as they come because you guys definately know how the game works.

The last two posts by both parties are an eye-opener to me. :)

And btw, who made this game so addicting???

I like how turning off 'avoid growth' while building settlers and workers can make the city increase in size, as long as the food storage is full.

And sometimes, with 'avoid growth' on, the city automation can't use tiles that amount to zero excess food. Even though there can be excess food, it will go to waste because of 'avoid growth'

I'm still online, although it's not totally reliable but that doesn't matter for civ :) I'll play tonight sometime.

IBT: Bismark attacks and loses two horsemen, two longbowmen and one axemen :D We lose nothing.

1142 (1): I make peace with Bismark for 5 gpt and 10g. Didn't think we could be sure to take Munich. Started chopping some forests and started a macemen in Persepolis waiting for it to grow (only one turn left).

1148 (2): Sell copper to Hatty for 2 gpt. We don't have any use for it anyway and she is our only friend :p

1154 (3): Apparently avoid growth was still on in Persepolis so I turn it off.

IBT: Mansa wants CS from us but i refuse. He is the only one who don't have it.

1160 (4): Start the Colossus in Teotihuacan (only 9 turns) to get some more money out of our water :) Also start a forge in Susa.

1166 (5): Move some workers towards Essen to build cottages there. Some nice land around Essen if we chop down the jungle.

1172 (6): Start a forge in Pasgarade and a Lighthouse in Tlatelolco.

1178 (7): Sell rice to Cathy for 2 gpt. I don't know if this was such a smart move now that I think of it, Hatty hates Cathy but done is done :(

1184 (8): Start a worker in Persepolis and a Lighthouse in Stuttgart.

1190 (9) and 1196 (10): Just some tileimprovements started.

Wow, what a boring round for you, lol.

Good that we still have a wonder to build. The extra commerce will be useful.

Sprite should be next. Speak up if you're still with us.

If not, then it's me again. So soon?

Should we apply for more?

1025 (9) Bombard Stuttgart again. Cat 1 withdraws, cats 2 & 3 die, Immortal 1 wins vs Longbow. Immortal 2 wins vs longbow and captures the town and 2 workers.
I'm impressed that an Immortal can take out a defending Longbow, even w/the collateral dmg!

if i were not already committed to 6 SGs, i would apply to the team here ~ i'm glad you're still carrying on w/o Sprite
