Spl01 - Noobish Players Try the Concurrent Format

Interesting. Splime declares on Cyrus. Frank declares on Toku (and takes a f---ing city!). And I pussed out of a war. Mayhaps this warmonger is getting to old? :(

Frank and Pholk, did you guys complete the Colossus? I couldn't tell.

No, i deleted it and built axes.

Man! It really is impossible for you to complete a wonder, isn't it?
Hey, i built some in one of my SP games...it was on Noble ;)

No, but I did get it started -- partly because I felt guilty for trying so hard to persuade votes from Colossus to circumnavigation last round  It'll be done next turn. Hey, maybe I can use that as a campaign slogan -- "Vote for Frank's save, hit Enter and enjoy the movie!"

Man, that iron makes rex's save tempting... OK, I'll be analyzing now.

How about we turn up the heat on France and go capture Paris?
Turn 3 - 55BC: Send axemen to Kagoshima, settler to the island with Gordium on it. Oh, did I mention we declared war on Japan?
nice

I have to go w/my save simply b/c a)we're at war w/one civ, why declare on a second, esp after wanting to turnup the heat :edit-too many laughing smilies:, b)I've got about 6 axes that are making their war towards france (4 will be @ Rheims [nap's Iron city] in a turn or two w/two more shortly behind them.) If we take Rheims, we have an outpost in France, and a city with Iron AND it's on a river so our other cities can have it too...

Question about Rheims: What do we have that can take out three archers at 22% odds? I don't think we're in any position to land war yet. (Though, Frank's proved we can take a small city.)

4 axes is all we need. In my save, Rheims had an Com I/Medic axe and an City 1 archer there now.

edit: okay, maybe not 4, but, we'll have 7 axes there in a few turns and if that doesn't crack the nut, i don't know what will.

edit2 (b/c i an't leave well enough alone): nappy is never going to be our friend, so i think the sooner we eliminate him, the better for us. His lands seem pretty green from what I was seeing.

Yeah, you caught me, Pholk. I was looking to do something to differentiate my turn set -- give us some real choices when voting. And when Kagoshima suddenly popped a second archer after I landed the 2 axemen, I wasn't expecting to actually take the city. Then they both won their combats at 26% odds. Go figure.

I'm torn here between Rex's and Pholk's saves.

I really like the iron coup that Rex pulled. Rex's economy is better than any of the others.

I like Pholk's setup to take Rheims along with the new city west of Frankfurt. Based on my outcome at Kagoshima, I think 7 axemen could surely take Rheims although we may not withstand an onslaught of counter attacks there.

Splime's economy is cooking along nicely too. Mine sucks but will get better next turn when Colossus completes.

So I'll listen a little longer ...

this may come back to bite me, but I can't think that Nappy has all that much of a force. Or it's not here on this island ~ I don't know if you noticed my scout on the French island..it's playing cat and mouse w/a couple of axes up there.

I will say this regarding my "strong" economy. It may be stronger than yours, Frank, but it still blows compared to England who's clearly out-teching us. Edit: If we don't militarize, we will lose. The sooner, the better.

I spent a lot of my turns exploring and we got the shaft. France is all grass. That leans me toward Pholk's. Though I haven't opened his save, I did some testing. I created a 20% defense city held by two archers. I had 4 axemen. None of the units were promoted (because world-builder makes it really hard to mass-promo). My first two axes never scratched the archers, but those were just bad rolls, I think. Three and four brought the archers to around 50% health. Next turn, they were all healthy again.

So, if, using Pholk's save, we try an invasion at Rheims, let's get all seven at once and prepare to lose probably four or so. We also need to ship archers stat.

Not a vote for Pholk. Just discussing how we'd play it out if I did.

hmm... unfortunately, I haven't had time to check the saves, but pholk's seems good... I'll check...

Voting with my heart, not my head. I think the iron coup I pulled is big. Not only do we get it, but it takes it away from Cyrus. However, Pholk's save is probably the most entertaining of the bunch.

That said, I'd like to suggest a change in format. At this rate, this game won't be over for a year. That's not bad in and of itself and I don't have many hangups over it taking so long.

However, this slow pace makes it difficult to maintain constant interest as little changes from week to week.

My proposition? 30 turns per set, but with minimal reporting. No turn-by-turn writeup, but a few paragraphs outlining the major happenings and maybe a summary. A couple of screenies of important events and maybe a few from the F9 screen.

This isn't my game, so the ultimate decision lies with Splime. I just wanted to pass along my thoughts.

not a bad idea. Hmmm...

If Pholk is in a position to attack Napoleon, then I'll vote Pholk.

Now the turnset vote:
Splime: 20t (More than before, but 30 seems to be a lot at this stage...)
Rex:
Pholk:
Frank:

no... ack, I might have to re-advertise this, get some more people...

frank just posted some turns in another SG we're in so he's not totally gone...perhaps just has missed the thread due to low activity...perhaps a PM??

I apologize for my absence here. I was traveling away from home for a 3 day weekend and then had eye surgery on Tuesday. Bad news is that I missed more time, but the good news is I don't need glasses anymore!

Anyways, I'm back here, now. Put me down as voting for Pholk's save and for 30-turn turnsets.
