Stargate SG1 and/or Andromeda

Of course people like SG1. I use to like Andromeda better, but now it's just trash. HOW has Andromeda gotten better at all? Just about all the Andromeda fans I know have abondoned it. Saying that where there used to a story arc and decent storylines, there's cheesy fight scenes, comic book villains, and costumes with an extremely annoying level of flashiness. I agree with all of that. The show is on par with Mutant X, or even lower. At least that show has REAL sex appeal.

I find them both entertaining, along with Farscape, but I won't go out of my way to watch them, I'll wait for them to come to me.

BTW, Don't you just hate that captain from Andromeda. I mean, god damn what a paunce, he's worse than the Star Trek captains.

I didnt dislike the characters as much (make no mistake though, I still hated all of them- nothing persoanl ) as I hated the story line, and the costumes AND THE SHIPS!- they sucked most of all, like bad concept art for far scape brought to reality....

Never seen Andromeda, but SG1 is pretty cool.

I really liked that episode of SG1 where they opened the gate, and there was a black hole near it. . . that was cool.

Well, I would argue that, at least for SG1, the cheesiness is what makes the show so great.

They don't try to fight their cheesiness or avoid it -- they EMBRACE IT. I mean, look at the bad guys. Cheap Canadian (or sometimes Jamaican) actors with deep voices and glowing eyes. Sounds like it should suck, no? But then they dress them up in clothes that went out of style 3000 years ago and give them lines like "Make no mistake, Osiris will return and the rivers of earth will run red with blood" or "take him to his place of shame and kill him". They go for the BIG cheese.

They've just taken a major disadvantage and turned it into their strongpoint. That's just one example. Other shows would try all sorts of tactics to cover up their cheesiness -- and they collapse on themselves. Not so with Stargate. This is why they're still on TV and still getting record-setting (at least for the Sci-Fi Channel) ratings.

Sorry, I can't really talk about much about this at the moment; however, I would like to read your papers sometimes (if you don't mind). May be some other time when I'm not too busy at work because this is really a long topic and we can't really talk about it in depth without dissecting the Bible, etc. In any case, I believe the Bible does strongly support the theory that God (s) was really an alien from an advance civilization. We had a lot of debate about this topic at the Infogrames Forum (since there are a lot of devoted Christians over there) last year.

Ironically, I didn't watch it because I thought it would be The Legendary Journeys of Hercules (Kirkules?) In spaaaaaaace. Saw a few episodes and came to like it.

Have to admit Third Season was getting a bit warped, probably because one of the main writers/producers left. (That, and with the fledgling Restored Commonwealth starting up the crew seems to run into the Ultimate Threat to high adventure: bureaucracy.)

Continuity suffered as well. I mean, you have this rather nasty threat coming in ready to blow planets apart and turn stars into black holes. Don't need more problems from another universe coming in. (Though I guess it has a small bit of merit in the "when it rains, it pours" standpoint.)

O' Neill's comments make me roll on the floor. At first I really couldn't stand his brusk, off-the-cuff, nonchalant attitude. Now I see it helps make the show what it is. I really do love it.

Well, Xen, when I first started watching Andromeda, I couldn't have agreed with you more. I turned it off for like a whole season, then I thought I'd take a look at it again this season . . .

This past season saw the storyline become much more succinct, much more drawn together. Most of the shows started making a lot more sense. (Some are still psychotically wierd, like someone's acid trip).

The characters became MUCH more developed, deep relationships formed, and I became more connected with the characters. Once I know the characters, their interpersonal relationships and their cheesy lines make for some good fun. The only thing that really irks me now is that Keith Hamilton Cobb (Tyr Anasazi) decided to leave the show. That's a real bummer since his character added a lot of life to the show.

I really don't know how the next season will be, but I'll certainly give it a try. I very well may hang it up if it turns back into it's original "crap fest".

I can't disagree more here. Everything pre-season 3 was going great. There was an actual storyline. When season 3 started, there was like no continuality between the eppies. They don't fit together. The only thing that has improved is the special effects. Other than that, they've lose a lot of sophistication. The fake and cheesy fight scenes, the bad lines, the lack of a believable plot. Season 3 was goddamned crude.

Actually, some of the episodes seemed to recall previous events. Just too many "filler" episodes.

There were a few little things I noticed from episode to episode that were nice touches. As the series progresses, there seems to be more and more crewmembers working in the background, implying the new High Guard's been recruiting and training more people and such.

One thing I found amusing was bringing back Christopher Judge and Micheal Shanks as AI characters. Thought it would be funny if they brought them back again, along with Amanda Tapping and Richard Dean Anderson as ship AIs so there could be a High Guard Battlegroup SG-1.

"Stand down, Rommie. It's a clean (and sane) copy of Balance of Judgement." "Great!" "Stand down, Rommie. Nothing like Gabriel is in its personality matrix either." "...dammit."

(Okay, maybe that's not such a good idea.)
