Time of Troubles: Death of Tonsang-2. (1050 BC/950 TY)

There were mourners in the streets; the rumors spread quickly.

Shao-li sighed. He himself did not quite reconcile with it yet. The Teacher was dead! The Teacher was dead! Why did not the sky fall? Why did sea not consume the island? Why did demons not invade Taiwan?

Why?! Why was Taiwan to exist beyond the Teacher's death?

Because, Shao-li realized, the Teacher is dead, but his Teachings are not. Someone should pick up his mantle and his Teachings. But who? Who?!

The people mourned, Taiwan was coming down. So great and prosperous was this island... and now, it will destroy itself. Unless another Teacher is found.

Shao-li turned away and went back into the temple. He needed to meditate.

---

Time of Troubles: Shao-li's Declaration. (1050 BC/950 TY)

Shao-li was wearing the yellow mantle and robes, all strikingly similar to those of the Teacher. Of Tonsang, he corrected himself, the First and the Greatest Teacher. Alas, Tonsang was dead, but leaving Taiwan Teacherless, leaderless, would make it fall into chaos and anarchy. He was accompanied by his main supporter (so far) - Dao-fang, who was in the crimson robes of a Great Monk, which he was.

They were going to the central square, down the stepped lattern leading down the Great Temple of Huong-li. There was some sort of a strange silence in the streets, it seemed as if the city was abandoned, but Shao-li knew that it was not so. After the mourning and the open hysteria was over, came the passive depression and fear. Panic, badly-hidden panic. If the Teacher - Teacher Tonsang, Shao-li corrected himself - was dead, nothing was certain. If Tonsang should die, why shouldn't the sky fall?

And there was the curiosity, ofcourse. What was he, Shao-li, doing in the Teacher's (for Tonsang still was THE Teacher for them) clothes?

---

He stood just outside of the temple, near him stood Dao-fang. The monks from the temple and the people from throughout the city gathered around him.

"Teacher Tonsang is dead." - he said. Everyone knew that. - "He is dead now, and this is a horrible tragedy. Many of you are unsure of the next day now. Many of you fear. And it seems that without Tonsang, Taiwan and Tonsang's teaching would all die out, along with the rest of the world.

But this is not what Tonsang wanted. He wanted his Teaching, his beloved island, his Taiwan, to outlive him.

The world has not yet ended. We must accept this. Accept this and live on, as Tonsang wanted us to."

Shao-li stopped.

Now Dao-fang spoke: "Indeed, we must live on. People of Taiwan, I believe sincerely that a new Teacher should carry on Tonsang's teaching, so that his wishes are carried out.

And I believe that the answer to the question "who should be the next Teacher?" is obvious.

Shao-li Rin[1] was Tonsang's favorite pupil, and I believe - sincerely! - that he was his best pupil. I believe that he should become the new Teacher."

There was shock, confusement... and eventual cheering.

And a spy secretly shook his fists in rage and set out to travel to Guni-sang. There, Taowang was waiting.

---

[1] - Rin is similar to Japanese "san". It is only used in the presence of the person spoken about.

Time of Troubles: The Spy Returns. (1050 BC/950 TY)

It was the morning of the fourth day since Shao-li's declaration when the spy arrived at Guni-sang. The city was large, larger then Huong-li as the spy only now realized, but more humble decorations-wise. The three temples here (unlike the five in Huong-li) were also smaller.

It was only natural, as Huong-li was the capital.

The spy jumped from his horse (as all other Taiwanese horses, it was a rather small pony which however wasood for local rocky surface) and entered the administrative building. Or, rather, the Palace of the General.

---

Taiwan was almost always at peace. Almost because some bandits and old-faithers still remained, and much as Tonsang disliked violence, they had to be tossed out into the sea (nobody wanted to build another ship to transport them to the Islands of the Exiles). The latter, that is. The former, the bandits had to be killed of, for certainly they were no humans.

Many Pupils disliked Taowang's militaristic policies (or, rather, the strenghthening and disciplinnation of the armed forces), but Tonsang quietly approved them. Perhaps, Taowang thought, he expected his death. And expected the chaos that will follow.

Perhaps. But what was important was that the army, despite the early disertions, was mostly ready to restore order. It already did in Guni-sang, and now it will in Huong-li. But it will be harder there, Taowang was sure.

He was even more sure now, now when he was white from rage and hatred, knowing that power was usurped by a heretic who pretended to be Tonsang's good pupil. Somehow, Taowang never trusted the monks and the Pupils, with few exceptions. Now he knew - he was right.

Wao-li, the spy sent by him to Huong-li to find out the reaction of the Great Monks and the more prominent Pupils, continued the report.

"...by lies, my master, they gained the support of the people there. The masses follow them, and much of the garrison has defected. Shao-li was accepted by most."

"Most?"

"Some left the city quietly, hiding their scorn, like I did. One of the Great Monks, Ta-ling, is amongst them."

"I know Ta-ling. He could be trusted." - that was not strictly so, Taowang didn't trust him neither.

"Indeed."

They were quiet for a moment or two. Taowang nodded.

"Very well. Wao-li-Rin, I ask you to gather the other emissaries and to contact Ta-ling, and some others. I will give you a list." - he indeed took out a parchhment. The hieroglyphs there did not, ofcourse, mean any names - simply the nicknames used by the emissaries. Taowang did not only strenghthen the army while General; he also created an advanced spy system.

Wao-li bowed, took the parchment and departed from the Room of Consultations.

---

Time of Troubles: The Room of Consultations (1050 BC/950 TY)

The Room of Consultations in the the Palace of the General was a craftfully-built small room, with the occasional ceramics, sculpture and flowers near the walls, and all this surrounding a well-crafted wooden table, with two decorated wooden chairs on its two sides. The General was a very cultured man.

This room saw not much intrigue in the past, despite what the rumors would say. No, the General would accept here his spies and his officers, and make sure that the army and the spy system continued to function, and function well, and also met Tonsang and his more trusted Pupils here.

But not much intrigue, really, more like the everyday routine.

Not until now, anyway.

The long-chinned, pointy-bearded, long-nosed, tall thin man in crimson robes was Ta-ling. The well-built burly well-shaven man was Taowang. The General.

"Taowang-Rin." - Ta-ling finally said.

"Ta-ling-Rin." - replied Taowang. They bowed to each other again.

"We had our differences in the past, G... Taowang-Rin."

Taowang ignored the fact that the Great Monk almost said "General". He acknolwedge himself to be the General and saw no shame in it.

"Indeed we had, Ta-ling-rin." - replied Taowang - "I will admit it, admit it bluntly so that we don't have any mistrust left - I thought that you would try to... replace the Teacher."

Taowang had to give his credit to Ta-ling, he did not shudder at all.

"And I expected you to do so, Taowang-Rin."

"But neither of us did." - said Taowang - "Instead, the snake that the Teacher fed at his breast, Shao-li did. No doubt with the help of the other snakes, especially Dao-fang. All the other colleagues of yours and his simply sucked up to him, hoping to increase their influence. You did not, and for this, you can have my - no, not favor, not friendship, but RESPECT.

They must not be allowed to rule Taiwan."

"Indeed. And may I add, that you too have my respect. You did not seek to replace the Teacher, in any way." - Ta-ling elaborated - "It is clear that you could never become a Teacher, as you are not a religious figure. But still, you did not offer your candidature to the post of Taiwan's ruler, under any name or title."

Taowang remained silent. Ta-ling smiled to himself.

"It is due to this that I decided that it is you who should become the new ruler of Taiwan, not Teacher, but ruler... General."

Taowang was rather surprised by this turn of events. He expected to agree with Ta-ling on forming a ruling council, and even then he thought Ta-ling would have to be persuaded first.

"Yes, yes, General-Rin." - smiled Ta-ling - "This is my suggestion. As you know, the other lands are, with no exclusions, ruled by dynasties of rulers. Many of them think that their imaginary gods watch over them, that they are thus superior to all mortals. They could respect other kings, only them.

You know, General-Rin, that the outside rulers do know about Taiwan. You know that they do have good boats. And that those boats are getting better and better. Taiwan - to them - is a state ran by a priest. Yes, I know that you had an idea about a ruling council; that idea, as you yourself know, has many flaws. The largest here is foreign relations.

We closed ourselves to the world. But now, the world is about to knock at our door. We should be prepared for it, General-Rin.

I will put it this way, General-Rin. While I will become the Temple-Keeper (no, not to replace the Teacher, only to lead the Temples, and to make sure that the Teaching is not corrupted or altered by heretics), you will become the Emperor, Emperor of Taiwan. You will crush the heretic rebels, and will lead Taiwan out of isolation. No, do not speak yet, General-Rin. While I will make sure that foreign influences will not corrupt our culture, and will only adopt those things that go with the flow of our culture and with the Teacher's Teaching, you will command Taiwan's domestic and foreign affairs. You will be an Emperor, their equal, representing a divine force just like they think they do, and then they will not dare to attack Taiwan just like that. No. They will accept us as equals... and one day, as superiors.

Please, consider this, General-Rin. Think and then reply."

"I already thought, Temple-Keeper-Rin." - said the General after just a moment of silence - "I agree. I wanted to refuse, but I agree. That is because I see it in your eyes."

"See what?" - asked Ta-ling, oddly quietly.

"You do not do this out of mere power-lust, or out of favor-lust. You did this out of respect, I saw it.

And I agree. Out of respect. And out of fear, fear for Taiwan."

Time of Troubles: The Messanger to Fuzhou. (1011 BC/989 TY)

Shao-li was meditating. He was still young, but his hair was now gray - all of it.

Time went by.

It all started out well, thirty-nine years ago. He was declared the new Teacher by the wide majority of the Great Monks and the Pupils. True, three or so Pupils and one Great Monk did not attend, and later were noticed at the Palace of the General, the cursed power-mad warlord who wanted to conquer all of Taiwan and rule it as his fief. But all begun well. Even when the General, Taowang, sent his forces north, still all was well, as soldiers left the treacherous warmongerer's army by hundreds. And joined the ranks of the Teacher's - his - supporters. The people of Huong-li took up arms, and after a ferocious battle, Taowang was forced to flee in shame.

And then it begun. First, Pao-ling, the garrison commander of Huong-li, refused to send his army after Taowang... and disbanded it. This allowed Taowang to even up numbers, to gather more forces... and by then, two more Great Monks and three more Pupils left. And many lesser monks and some of the fanatics followed when a lightning killed Dao-fang. Thus, Taowang escaped death, and managed to build up a new army, occupying and defiling the streets of the holy city, Guni-sang. And the unity of the Monkdom and the Pupildom was broken, Taowang and the hated, hated Ta-ling declared him - the TEACHER! - a heretic and a traitor. They said that Tonsang was the ONLY Teacher. MADNESS! They wanted Taiwan to fall into anarchy, where bandits such as they would be free to burn, rape and pillage.

And then the peasant leader, Mao-Tse-Tung[1]. Probably in exchange for a large amount of the loot, he switched sides and declared for Taowang, supplying his armies with food.

And now, Taowang was marching upon Huong-li again. Shao-li could see, hear and - that was the worst of it - smell the hordes of near-barbarians, ex-Taiwanese, who marched upon Huong-li, bringing death and destruction...

Anything was better then this! They must not be allowed to take Huong-li! They will destroy the Temple and kill at the loyal monks, Great Monks and Pupils! Shao-li trully did not care about his life as much as he cared about the city. That city... What could save it now?

Suddenly, his mind found a solution. A short-term, tactical compromise, retreat from the main ideology, one step backwards, two step forward...

He would send a messanger. On a ship, he would send a messanger to the Outer Realms. And find allies there, lure them with promises of Taiwan itself. Those allies will stop Tonsang, and will bleed themselves against him. And then, they could be expelled once weakened.

This move was risky. But Shao-Li took the risk.

---

Time of Troubles: The General's Uncertainty. (1000 BC/1000 TY)

Taowang was uncertain.

His armies stood on that day slightly outside of Huong-li, on a hill to the south from it. It was a large army, of many hundreds - not as large as he would have liked it, but still large, and loyal, and well-trained.

The war was taking a real lot of time, many, many long years. At first, it was catastrophical, later it was balancing on the edge of defeat, but then, it again switched in his favor. A patient man, Taowang rebuilt his army.

And so they stood here again.

In front of them, the black-clad armored Chinese and the yellow-robed heretics skirmished. Shao-li, the fool, called for foreign assistance, yet his would-be mercenaries turned against him.

But Taowang was not happy with this, not at all. Foreign invaders have taken Huong-li, Taowang even considered allying with Shao-li, but that... simply wouldn't do. Better to destroy them all.

But how? How?

Taowang walked away from the observation post, with closed eyes.

In his head, a plan was formed.

---

[1] - Not the real Mao... but very very similar. Not communist only due to the nonexistance of communism at the time. A "peasant warlord". I just wanted to find a Chinese-sounding name on letter "M", as I didn't use one yet here, and incidentally came up with this.

I hope you like all those stories I wrote up about the Time of Troubles.

No, seriously, we'd like you to have this, as a token of our friendship. You could use some more eco.

@das, awesome stories :goodjob:

lol, grandmaster had an original idea of his own for a carthage..

and sure you can join, as an npc or something in south east asia or perhaps if you can make a nice background story ill let you be a civ in a barbarian area...

hmm, Id prefer the Hittites to be perm NPC...so Ghana/Mali would be good

Mali Empire
Monarchic Federation
Capital: Timbuktu
Ruler: Sundiata Keita/Global Nexus
Economy: Stable
Army: 500 Spearmen, 500 Archers
Navy: None [?]
Culture: 1
Education: 0
Wonders:
Notes: For years the Mandinka people lived as the rulers of numerous nearby tribes, but it wasn't until Sundiata Keita that this rule became solidified into a true civilization. This civilization was given the name Mali, and from there Sundiata expanded his power to even more nearby tribes. All of this was done peacefully, and the Mali people are great lovers of peace.

-Note: The government of Monarchic Federation is a tight, closely-controlled federation of small tribes [or provinces] which are ruled by a single king but have very limited self rule over their lands. Hopefully, this government won't be a problem?-

Should I provide a map for the starting location. I, uh...I'm not wholly sure myself where Timbuktu is, unfortunately, since it's been years since I studied Mali...

OOC: Look at a world map or globe. Timbuktu is still there, just under a Frankicized name (Tombouctou). Although I'm sure Azale can figure out your start location easilly enough.

Now lets hurry up and make contact so we can both get rich off trans-Saharan trade. ;)
