stDarNES1: Stars!

@Darwin: Ok, if the Vakkra want to fight rather than have the Sojourners build ships for them, they're welcome to be stupidly belligerent. What was meant was "specifically design materials/components/entire ships/weapons/stuff to their design and turn it over to them in finished form".

Oh Erik, is life so bad. Do you hate it that much?

Okay, good to know that Erik.

You know, you're just attracting attention to yourself here.

Besides, these guys think nothing of killing humans. They killed 5000 unarmed colonists on first contact! Even if it could be seen as unintentional then, now there is no question.

I was just questioning what you meant by the statement in the orders.

The Vakkra have specified that any Faction who wishes to submit to them, is more than welcome to serve.

EDIT: So, your message is: Now I'll send a communication specifically directed to the Vakkra, where the underlying text is "You hold the tech, but we hold the cards. We'll work for you, but not slave for you, so you'll have to show us something."

In first contact with our faction. Although it is possible that they were unaware of our factionalism.

OK, with all this mess and editing, forget I said anything. The public announcement stands. I'll send official orders soon.

Orders sent.
Ship specifications sent.

Will any sort of ship data become public?

There will be a delay on this update. My Wife's grandfather is not expected to make it through the day, and as such, I will be down in CT sometime today/tomorrow.

I'll be absent from the forums for a few days.

Orders will not be due until Monday, but I can't guarantee the update will occur until Tuesday/Wednesday.

STORY POST:

Picking at Ashes

*hand signal: query*
*hand signal: fine* (x4)
*hand signal: move*
Five people drifted out of the tiny base built in the ruins of the Old Dominion defense net. Scavenged from the life-support systems of two destroyed Cruisers and every salvageable hull, it held twenty people in relative comfort, with space but not resources for a hundred more.
"Got comm?" asked the leader.
"Yep."
"Yeah."
"Me too."
"Yes."
"Great. Try to keep to signals, though." He made a gesture and fired a shot from his airpistol.
*hand signal: this one*
Two of the workers placed a large lead-polymer sheet around the indicated area. The third began taking out tools and measuring gadgets, while the fourth and fifth began disconnecting it from everything else nearby with tightbeam lasers and monoknives.
Finally, it came loose. The sheet was wrapped around the huge node of weaponry. More or less in concert, they fired their airpistols, propelling themselves and the Defense Net gun battery back to the base.

"Phew... I was worried for a while there. Nice to know the cyberlord was right." :)
"Well, of course. If it shut down when the main node went offline, taking more connectors offline wouldn't really bring it up again." ;)
"Less talk, more cutting, you two." :nono:
"We're working. Do you really want us to have it fire in here?":undecide:
"Of course not. But we saw that the Old Dominion went for firepower over self-containedness. These units aren't independent, just very, very powerful. You've removed the power supply and the trigger; what are you worried about?" :crazyeye:
"A battery, perhaps? A self-destruct mechanism?" :p

Once cut open, the unit in question turned out to be a large laser gun.

"Impressive. Doesn't look like any frequency I'm used to..."
"Just a moment. Take it to the briefing room and dump it on the table. I'm calling in the others. We'll need every idea we can get when we try to understand this thing."

Minutes later, the partly disassembled artefact was lying on a table cluttered with sheets of scratch paper, and twenty men and women filed in to begin examining it and also to begin chattering at each other.
"Who's got the instrument calibrators?"
"I've got the weight and length ones."
"Are we sure this thing is safe?"
"Oh, please. Not you too!"
"Hey, it's in good shape!"
"Yeah, the fleet scouted out the area for undamaged ones before they left."
"Wait a moment, I'll get the nanoscale surface measurers."
"Are we going to test it?"
"Can we even test it?"
"Stop pushing, you'll get your turn, and I've just got the spectral analyzer in place!"
"Don't tell me you dumped that piece of junk on top of my stellar notes!"
"Were you on the team that retrieved it? No. So don't you tell me how it works, that's what we're here to find out."
"Order, order!"

...A day later...

Official Report Category #312 (D)
Old Dominion Defense Net investigation

DRAFT VERSION - OIP
The first gun battery from the Defense Net has been disassembled in laboratory conditions. For several reasons(1), it was physically disconnected from both the power supply and the firing mechanism initially, hence no live tests have been conducted. The battery consisted of a single weapon node: a large laser. Initial examinations of the power supply connector suggested that the energy capacity available was in the area of sixteen times that of a common Fighter ship's laser, while nearer inspection of the firing mechanism, and optical tests of a cross-section of the inner barrel indicate that it could fire at twice the power and five times the rate of our aforementioned laser.
//No - Nicat has papers, three/three more likely
We conjecture that the highly different standards make it impractical to directly adapt or convert these weapons for anything but additional Cruiser weapon sections(2). However, the reflectors allowed the firing of lasers with ten to twelve perhex less initial stimulation relative to our current technology. Development or imitation of such high-grade mirrors, if possible, would be highly useful with regard both to Cruiser class ships, drastically lowering the warm-up time after leaving a jumpgate, and also for Fighter class ships, increasing available engine power and thus maneuverability.
//Section on the power supply must be inserted here. Perhaps SE can comment on size, cable? Ask retrieval team, or get new visuals of site.
//HM has calculations, 5ph improvement. See notes.
//Multi-Collab not working. Get 5-6 people and acquire power supply from Net.

We strongly recommend the further study of the Defense Net, but advise against establishment of a permanent outpost. Study objects can be sent through the Jumpgate to Sabro for study at that research station while nonoffensive materials et al. should be lowered on Sierra for colony building. This will build centralized scientific expertise closer to Oncol; also the dismantling has several other benefits
//RE, you mentioned this. Care to fill in? Add "(3)" when done.

Mirian Research in ship construction is rapidly progressing to the stage of Destroyer class ships, below is the final prototype Mirian Destoyer, barring a few tweeks its going to go through mass production to help fight the Vakkara threat.

N.B These ships have had a new Chassis Designed.

Trinity Council Session
Vakkra Report
Presented to the council in year 285 of the Recovery(NDE 10) by Emperor Misato.

As you all know, aproxamantly three months ago, the Carrier Nyxius made an emergency long jump from the Kalkka system to Asuka. While it did not survive the trip, it's black box, along with a third of it's crew, did manage to survive. The did this by using a badly damaged sjac that docked with the nyxius right before the jump. We will manage to slavage it and it's black box, though it will need to undergo a compleat refit before it can return to combat.

Which, in part, is good. For what we have learned of the Vakkra is bad. They are more advanced then us in every way. At least, technologically. Their weapon systems are at least 2-3 times more powerfull then our own, and when combined with their superior armor, and the fact that they have some sort of system that negates our targeting system. Well, it's just bad news for us.

Luckly for us, we do have one advantage. our past. During the downfall of the dominion, and the subsequent rise of Trinity into it's current form, and the re-discovery of the gate, Trinity underwent three Global Civil Wars and two Solar Civil Wars. She second of which involved the use of short-jump drives.

Our entire fleet in Kalkka were designed around assault pinicipals. A balance design of weapons and defenses, they were perfect for their asignment, gaurding and watching the Miria fleet in orbit around Kalkka, and defeating them if needed. Since the Miria fleet did not posses short jump capacity, there was no need for the more exotic designs, as the standard assault design could easily mop up the Miria fleet while they moved to engage us, then short jump away before to much damage could be done. Given that they were so outclassed by the Vakkra, their defeat was given. But we did learn a bit of their tactics. Yhey are overconfident.

Instead of using any sort of tactics, they relied on their ability to confuse our targeting and their superior shields and armor. They engaged in what was essentially a slugging match with us.

So, we will take advantage of this fact and dilliver a nasty supprise. We will be resurrecting the shotgun and sniper designs, and starting in a mere two years, a very special supprise, complements of our good friend Zor Prime, who's recent work with the 'Flower of Life', as the Invid call it, has yeilded some interesting results.

From now on, aporoxmantly 50% of SJAC's, and 1/6th of the cruisers will be built around the shotgun style of short jump warfare. Based around the Pod, which is basically an overpowered shorjump drive, a reactor, and a simple gyro-targeting system, The SJAC's build around this pinicipal will hold aproxmantly two thousand twenty-pod tubes, and the cruisers three thosand fifty pod tubes. By short jumping in to less then one thosand kilometers, they will able to use a simple targeting protocol to launch the pods en-mass the enemy ships and achieve at least a .02% direct hit-rate and a proximity hit-rate of .14% per enemy ship in the targeted area. With the sheer volume of fire a single SJAC can produce in a single volley, over 40,000 pods, that would amount to 8 direct his and 56 indirect hits per volley per ship.

Yes, I know there are drawback this system, the most seiver being that the cruisers so equipped will only have enough for fire 3 volley with reload time of over 10 minutes, and the SJAC's will have but a singel volleys, though a carrier or starbase can reload their tubes in a mere 5 minutes. There is also a weakening of their armor and active targeting system will render their defense weaker, but they will issue a second short jump out of the enemy range once they have dumped their volleys.

The second tactic is the sniper class. Which is a lot simpler in design and system then the shotgun or assault class. Aproxmantly 1/3th of the cruisers will be built on this chassis. It is designed with long range kentic rail guns with storable/programmable rounds, superior sensors, and sensor linking systems. It's main purpose will not be a active attacker, though it will fire when it has a shot. Instead, it will server to boost the others and hopefully eliminate some of the problems with aquiering target locks on the enemy Vakkra ships. when combined with the new target-predication software, we should have less problems.

We have also recovered several old assault ships from the Second Solar Civil War. Outdated, they will be retrofitted as they are shipped to Asuka along with the troops. Hopefully, we can use them to take one the Vakkra ships. We could learn a lot from their technology.

And so, that sums up the report. Please, discuss and present alternative options, questions, and improvements to the proper channels. We are always willing to here our subjects.

OOC: note, these are just tactics. these are not uu's. okay. so don't get confused. just interesting weapon systems.

pods: a pod is a one meter sphere with a very compact, short lived and unstable reactor (when active). the reactor serves as a warhead, and powered a small short jump drive, which has been miniaturized by removing the initial dampers and a lot of the safety mecnizems. they target themselves in relation to the ship that lunches them via a gyro-targeted, and one they activate their drived, are non-stirible and travel in a straight line. they have an active range of about 40,000 kilometers, and travel around .8lightspeed. they are launched via a simple pressure jet, and in large numbers. they are a very simple weapon, and relatively cheap, compared to missiles.

the snipers are simply decicated sensor ships with a long range weapon. they can assist the other ships in the fleet with their sensors also. heh, nifty, he? and darwing, they are not uus. like a said before. simply a division of tactics, and ship specialization. and again, i applogize. ^_^

Ummm no need to apologise TerrisH...quietly begins developing countermeasures...

<_o
>_o

(I'm wearing a monocle)

...countermeasures for something completely different.

Incidently @Trinity - movement of Military vessels through Vayim space is now prohibited, have a nice day.

Oh, I was apologizing to darwin. I was a little mad at the way combat happened int he update,a dn I was a little mad, but at my self, not him. but I sounded a little harsh.

and you hade better make up counter-tactics. I have.. an intrest in spaceborn tactics. let's see. Beamers (C-BS), Sluggers(BS+), RPG(BS+(see SDF-1)), swarm(FI, SJ, Cr), sledgehammer(group, BS+, fi), Project:Overkill (Dred+). and that's just to name a few. I got dozens more.

Kal: hmmm I might just absorb you for the greater good. nah.. I'll keep it peacefull, would you care to set up a trade route next turn?

Dis: hopefully, you don't consider scoutships millitary.

(sercret to Gellion guess my plans with the invid. for if you know robotech, you already know the fate of Trinity)
