Equipped with a kontos heavy spear instead of the standard lance, it gives the Cataphract the edge in melee while retaining the best aspect of a lance of an initial charge. Cataphracts are equipped with a wide range of side arms - from maces to bash it enemy plate armor, killing a man not from piecing the flesh, but from blunt trauma; to fine long swords, as well as bows held in the "Mongol lock", increasing accuracy, and the force of the bow draw.
