A Complete History Of Austria
By Franz Erstweiler

Early Economic Growth
With the throne securely in the hands of Leopold he now set out to develop Austria's economy. The capture of lands along the Adriatic Sea were key to the development of Austria as it allowed the nation a coastal route into the Mediterranean. The Emperor knew that he would need to build strong durable ports to attract foreign traders from the lands that surrounded the Mediterranean. These new traders would bring new wealth and stories enhancing Austria's knowledge of the world.
The city of Trieste had become the new trade centre for Austria. It's position on the Adriatic Coast allowed it to attract wealthy traders from far and wide to sell their goods, which were in great demand in the courts of the Austrian Empire.
The Emperor knew also that to control his people he needed to ensure that his tax collectors were given powers to fulfil the laws that he had laid down. the tax collectors were effectively turned into Police detectives with their job to ensure that everyone in the Emperor paid the taxes they were due. This system of organised taxation worked wonders for the countries treasury but caused many grumbles of dissatisfaction from the Serb and Slavic people's who were hit especially hard.

The Roman War
With Rome being defeated and pushed back by the allied armies in Europe from all sides their defeat seemed imminent. Emperor Leopold had long cast his eyes upon the Roman city of Modica upon the Adriatic coast. It was a wealthy trading port and would offer many riches to the Austrian Emperor. Now with Rome a failing power Leopold seized his chance and sent his brother Artemis to take the city and the Roman colony...

Orders:
  • Invade Roman Colony on Adriatic Coast with 300 Clubmen and 200 Archers plus 50 Spearmen for defence led by General Artemis
  • Increase Economy (New Trading ports, taxation system etc...)
  • Expand Eastwards

I think they did stop working at one point, though...

to austria:
you did not joined the roman wars, why should you gain anything? the roman colony is selanto propperty.

that would be good

That might be necessary ;).

You should really update, Jason. Do update, please.

The Port of Caralis

The city of Caralis is established on the Masillian island of Sardinia. The city is rather large in comparison to other cities, and while constructed by the Masillian government with Masillian slaves and money, it is home to thousands of Romans who inhabit the island. Nevertheless, the city has become an important trading stop for many trade convoys going from east to west and vice versa. If utilized (taxed), this city could become very lucrative for the Massilian emperor. Also, with the increased trade with Egypt and Canaan, the Massilians have entered the iron age.

Again, a boatload of Gaul settlers sent to the mystical lands in the south called Africa, were never heard from again. The wisemen of Gaul continue to argue with King Alaric, saying that it is impossible for such a small boat as a galley to make voyages into the treacherous oceans.

The Modern City of Athens

The city of Athens, the center of the great Athenian empire in Greece, undergoes a major renovation project, which cleans and rebuilds the city. The result is a magnificent city, the most beautiful and large city in the entire world. It has become the end point in many journeys of philosophers and wisemen of the like, and has greatly added to the education value of the city. Athens is known as the “Capital of the Civilized West.” Such an introduction of intellectuals has propelled the nation into the Iron Age.

Using brilliant tactics and an Athenian Expeditionary Force, the Macedonians are able to launch a two-pronged attack against the Bulgars, captured the city of Bulgar, the capital, from sea and river. However, such an attack has left the ability to supply the army very hard without a larger navy, especially when the Bulgar galleys have cut of supplies through the Dardanelles. The army thus pillages the land for supplies, turning the population against them.

As the Chinese empire grows, so does the population. Outlying villages such as that of Jing (northwest) are more susceptible to rebellion, forcing the Chinese army to be more of a force to keep the provinces from rebelling other then to defend the whole of China from foreigners. Rebellion is a constant threat in China, and may one day get the better of it.

Novgorodian soldiers march to their first war against barbarian invasion in the east. At first, the battles were simply won by the Novgorodians, loosing only a couple men here, a couple there. But soon they encountered something they had never seen before: horsemen. These horsemen barbarians, only countered by the Novgorodian spearmen, gave the clubmen and archers no chance. The barbarians now united in a cause, inch deeper into Novgorod.

The empire of Rome, once feared all across the land, has now fallen to the Takirians of the north. The last battle was deadly for both sides, but with the defeat the Romans lost the city of Rome, and thus surrendered. This couldn’t have come at a better time for the Takirians, since they were running low on man power, and a rebel army in the north threatens the security of the King. Led by the noble named Nuch Ching, the rebel army consists of nearly six hundred poorly trained spearmen who claim that Nuch Ching is the rightful King, and that the one in power now is an imposter. The Takirian army, being so far south, is not expected to make it back to Taikir proper before the army reaches the capital.

Because of a close bond formed between the Canaanites and the Cypriots, the technology of iron and the philosophy that comes with it flourished on the small island of Cyprus and its colonies. Also in the north, the entire population of Hittites are taken in as slaves, leaving plenty of land free for new Canaanite nobles, more work, and the admittance of so many slaves into the Canaanite system has also helped the economy.

Meanwhile, a rather large Canaanite army is dispatched to attack the Assyrians near Hatti, but not taking them by surprise as the Assyrians expected something out of Canaan. The city is taken by the Canaanites, but nothing else is really annexed. Meanwhile the Assyrians have begun to muster a large army for a counter attack. Several attempts at assassinating the king of Assyria have been unsuccessful, and the assassins of Cyprus are to blame.

Through the constant battles and trading missions, the whole of Mesopotamia learns the Iron Age from the Canaanites, indirectly of course.

The Siamese continue to win important victories against the Mekong, establishing the fact that the Siamese soldiers are better trained, better led, and better equipped. The Mekong are pushed back ferociously into their capital and the surrounding suburbs, forced to fight among their most lucrative land.

General Artemis, leading an army of Austrians appointed by the King, fights his way south into the lands of the Roman colony. Using the terrain to his advantage, the general quickly routes the small Roman garrison and takes the colony without loss. The men serving under him greatly respect him, and claim that he is the best, without question, general in all of the lands.

Metaliturtle, where is Chang’an?

Das, normally you cannot teach a civilization the iron age. Its on the front page, but this time I made an exception since the Cypriots are such a small civilization.

Jason, I'll be gone from Thursday to Sunday. If you update in that stretch of time, could you just make my nation a temporary NPC? Thanks in advance.

Me too!!! Maybe we'll see eachother....

Chang'an is like southwestern china just east of some mountains on a river
my guess is that lowest point on the river in China would be the place to put it

To Hanseatic:
We are having troubles with barberians on our borders and that is preventing us from going forward with our plan. We would apreciate any assistance you could give us.

OOC: Well, I think it isn't very unrealistic for us to explain the Cypriots how to forge iron weapons. We could just teach them, couldn't we?

And thus begun the rule of the Sadist Monarch… :)

Story:

Hasilis died. Died peacefully in his sleep, expired without pain and his death was only noticed in the morning. Yet silent as his death might have been, a scholar later compared it to be a “thunder that deafened Canaan, earthquake that ruined an entire era”. And indeed, the Era of Hasilis was over, and the next Era of the Canaanite history went down in history under a self-explanationary title – the Era of Blood.

Hasilis had no legitimate heirs, but he did have a bastard son – Odreath. He was found and brought up by priests, and it seemed as if he would be an enlightened and wise ruler. But it was not so. Odreath had a hatred for his father and his people and the entire world, a deep hatred ever since his birth.

In his childhood he was traumatized – his mother, a fairly poor lesser queen, died during his birth, and a neighboring Canaanite lesser kingdom took over. Thinking that Odreath is a legitimate heir to that kingdom, the king of the conquerors, Telominis, imprisoned him. He wanted to execute Odreath, but it was then that a group of bandits, whose leader too was imprisoned in the same dungeon, has rescued the leader and during the panic, Odreath escaped. He was captured soon by one of Telominis’ men, but was not recognized, and enslaved. And during this harsh life, he was suddenly found by one of the Priests of Baal. His hatred for the world, developed with time, was hidden and somehow decrease by the education in a temple. But it was still there, and hatred for those who ruined his childhood he unleashed on Assyrians, on Anatolians and on his own subjects.

Remember our treaty against the Assyrians? It seems that they think you will help THEM. I have an EXCELLENT an idea on how to deal with those pests. Pretend that you agree, but ask them to give you the land they promised now – it would be more land gained without fighting. Then, join their ranks in the former Hittite ranks. We shall attack them, and unexpectedly for them, your troops (each one of whom will have a red piece of cloth for us to recognize them) will attack them as well, leading to much panic within their ranks! Then they will be routed and defeated! Defeated, seized and slain or enslaved! Muwhahahahahahaah! Um, nothing really… ;) So, will you do so?

Orders:

- Continue wonder (5/6).
- Grow army twice – train our first short swordsmen.
- We have an unproportionate amount of archers as compared with the amount of spearmen. Try to convert 200 archers to spearmen.
- Found the city of Tyre.
- Our entire army is to attack the Assyrians again. If the Akkadians go along with the plan, we are not to attack them. We are always to try and force a battle on the Assyrians by putting our infantry in front of their army. They will then, probably, start a chariot attack, but our own chariots will be hidden as best as possible and then attack the enemy chariots in the flank, making them helpless victims. After that, we are to charge the Assyrians with all forces – hopefully the Akkadians will then attack the Assyrians as well. Have no mercy. Those whom we do capture are to be tortured alittle and ransomed – if the Assyrians don’t pay the ransom, they are to be slowly and painfully executed (our king needs to build up an image here).
