Stray (?) Cat Advice.

Are you allowed to euthanize it, or is it a legal hassle to do so where you are?
WTH? Why would he euthanize it? You don't kill a cat because you find it annoying when the cat drops by to say, "Hi, I'm hungry, please feed me." Especially if you think it might belong to someone.

Technically allowed but.

1. May be someone's pet.
2. Can be rehomed.
3. No reason to it's healthy.

If it's a stray I can re-home it in around 5 minutes.

And he is cute.

Guess from 13th century cats pogrom, 18th century cat-burn till this day nothing have really change, the war toward cat in the West just sublimated but it's still there.

My experience prove to me that cats keeps control and check the encroachment of many rodent, this is real despite some article stating "oh cat is not an effective rodent hunter, they consider mouse to be large animal and not necessarily hunt them" while cats in our neighborhood keep our cluster clean from mouse, roaches, centipede, and septic rats.

I can't imagine this lol, from asking is it alright to feed hungry animal to a conclusion just to kill it.

Unsub thread, too much for me.

mac: can you have it killed?

When the first of many stray cats started hanging around my house, I always try to use social media to find any owners first. Eventually I have to call animal control. There are a lot of undeserving owners out there.

As an aside, people might have some insight into how I feel when I see bragging about steak or bacon consumption.

My social media has services that allow me to easily find people who've posted "help find my cat" requests. I've spent many hours doing some stranger a favor because I suspected they actually loved their cat.

I dunno, we feel this need to rescue unwanted cats. I think they hijack something in our brains. I think there are more deserving causes that we ignore due to the moral license we get from rescuing cats. I totally recognize that some people get huge benefit from their own ownership.

We have posted on local Facebook lost and found.

if you have cats dont let him in, feline leukemia and other diseases are a threat to your cats (you probably know that but just in case). Vaccinations offer protection but I dont know how effective they are.

One neighbor down the road has an animal farm with a barn full of barn cats...semi-feral, unfixed barn cats. The last 2 strays that showed up here probably came from there. Both are probably males, I think they roam further than females.

Na not letting him in. He turned up today and I gave him a few biscuits and water.

He scoffed them more like a stray vs someone's pet.

Some photos from few minutes ago. He is thin at his back legs.

Spoiler Aww :

Well, to be fair, Zardnaar is talking about rehoming it. El Machinae casually asked about killing it.

Good grief, every time I get up off my chair, Maddy assumes she can talk me into feeding her, even if it's only been 10 minutes since she ate. She's had her breakfast, had her afternoon snack, and will have supper later. She should know this, but operates on the assumption that "you never know; mom's a pushover at times if I word it just the right way."

More deserving? It depends on what your personal list of "deserving" is. I donated my time to a no-kill cat shelter for special-needs cats. Some were permanent residents there due to medical, behavioral, or psychological issues, but others were there because their owner died and they were too old for the SPCA (the local SPCA deems cats older than 5 years to be unadoptable). They were considered adoptable by the shelter staff, but they would need human companionship to remain that way.

My job was to play with these older cats, cuddle them, and keep them socialized so if/when they were adopted, they would be able to adapt more easily to their new home (this shelter tries to match cats with the relative ages of owners so senior humans get senior cats).

I certainly considered it a worthwhile thing (to the point of walking several blocks to get there through snowdrifts in -30C to do my shifts). I didn't have money to give, but the cats appreciated my time.

@Zardnaar: This cat reminds me of my Gussy. The hair color is the same, but the markings on the face and chest are a bit different. He's a grey tuxedo, if anyone asks.

The tragedy of all this is that the lockdown is preventing somebody from helping an obvious stray from getting help. Lockdowns not only affect the human spirit it also prevents kindness from being performed. I'm not trying to start trouble, merely observing yet another consequence of lockdown policies. It's so sad now the world we live in.

My sister in law is open to the idea of adopting him. She wants us to try and find owners if possible.

Her words "lockdown is hard without a cat".

Puss has an advantage atm the SPCA is shut.

Cats not in serious distress. He can probably wait a week or so.

If he was he would be looked after, rehomed already and trip to vet to be checked out.

The main reason he hasn't been adopted yet is because it could be someone's pet who just like scrounging, pats and fighting.

Cats are pretty bad for the environment. They are obligate carnivores, so cannot go vege like us and dogs. They also do a number on many bird species. Cute though.
Cats can go canned and dry, if the owners are responsible (that said, I did used to let some of my cats out, knowing they would catch a mouse or two - which is a good thing). Maddy has never killed anything, though she has tried to play with the insects that made it inside. She was upset when I shooed her away and killed the insect.

If someone wants to spend money to prevent unnecessary suffering and death, they can give to the MSF. If someone cared about animal life, they wouldn't rescue an obligate carnivore and raise them on inhumane or unsustainable meat.

If someone can derive utility from a cat, they should definitely get a cat and neuter it, I'd never disagree with that.
Thanks for the permission I don't need.

You have a medical background. What about the mental health aspect of cats? If not for the cats I had in 1997 - the year my grandmother died - I would not be here today. I was in a very bad headspace back then - the worst ever. The only thing that stopped me from taking those pills was the realization that the cats would die if I did, because my dad was more into the bottle than being responsible in those days. He'd have gone on bender after bender and let them starve.

Cats are essential for my mental health, and theirs matters to me.

So you're vegan?

My housekeeping helper declared herself vegan and proceeded to lecture me about the contents of my fridge. Then, another time, she said she was thirsty and did I have anything she could drink?

Her vegan self was quite happy to drink a can of clamato juice. Last I heard, clams are animals.

It's been frustrating. I'm allowed 2 cats under the terms of my lease. My older cat died 4 years ago and I've had a few unsuccessful attempts at adopting adult cats since then.

But a kitten would work. A kitten would be subordinate, and not come with a lifetime of previous medical issues, psychological issues, etc. I've adopted adult cats before, but find it easiest to bond with kittens.

So I've had a permanent alert placed on my Kijiji account and get daily emails about available cats.

Kijiji has bizarre ideas about what "local" means. Most of the cats on offer aren't local, and I have no way to get there to meet the cat and see if it's feasible.

If the best we humans can do for a cat we don't know much about and looks not perfectly healthy to us, is to put it down, I'd say the cat's perspective would be: I'll take my fighting chance elsewhere, thanks.

Well gonna save this one one way or another.
