Succession Game for Newbies

>.> oops <.<
I traded them CoL for Lit and 107GP the traded China CoL for 62 GP.

That's bearable. :) We were already planning on trading around CoL before to get Math and I don't mind having it in AI hands. The only thing was that it was a monopoly tech.

Ok, at this point I say trade CoL and see what you can get for it. Don't trade around MM to keep the AI from getting galleys out to the other continents.

No worries man. :)

My people are never unhappy so I don't check my cities...that did not work in this game. Are people are pissed :(

My people are never unhappy so I don't check my cities...that did not work in this game. Are people are pissed :(

Why?

Is the lux slider up enough, did we do some whipping, or what else is causing this? Any more details could help...

Prolly 2 many people :/ usually reg.,doesnt have people get pissed so quickly ::confused: , :mischief: or maybe the aztecs have been stealing our people for the human sacrifices?:mischief:

I'd say we need to bleed off some citizens, our cities may be too big to make everyone happy. No whipping in Republic, so its not that. We need more luxes hooked up, thats important too. Those courthouses were market pre-builds, did you make markets in our big cities? We may need some war happiness, so get some horsies made too. I thought I left things in decent shape, so what's going on?

I had things under control at the end but all those unhappy citizens made me have an aneursym. My people as always celebrating we love the_____ day and I am unfimiliar with pissed of people. I almost started building temples everywhere :crazyeye: We can link up some silks soon :)

I am also a builder so my cites are cxxxxc or in some cases cxxxc and seeing all those unprotected cities was stressing me out...

This is my Got It. :)

It's possible that we whipped while in Despotism and the effects are still carrying over, but I can't think of any time we did that...Anyhow, it probably is due to a large number of citizens because we have some very food rich cities in our core.

I'll probably keep on producing settlers in the core as well as turn excess excess food (no typo, I mean food that is otherwise wasted on growth) into some taxmen or scientist to stablize the situation. I'm betting the large number of flood plains is causing us some major food overruns.

Also, if the courthouses weren't turned into markets, I'll sell the courthouse and maybe cash rush some marketplaces (I'll analyze it to see if it seems economical).

I'll also start an FP prebuild, get the horses coming, and look to start attacking the Aztecs within my turnset. :hammer:

Any further ideas on where you guys would like to see the FP built?

Hey Kumquat, the screenshots look pretty good. :) :goodjob: Good thing you didn't start the temples ;). I'll probably fill in some of the city spacing gaps with some extra settlers to get a tighter weave.

I'm also going to put together another dotmap at the end of my turns.

One other thing: Are you familiar with CivAssist2?

If not, I highly recommend downloading it from here and run it. It includes a lot of additional analytic functions that really make a CIVer's life more bearable. Even if you don't use all the tools, at least set it to show alerts in the little window. That will give you advance warning if any of your cities are about to riot. ;)

I feel your pain, as I have been fighting my builder tendencies too, but it's the end result that we are after, which is winning with a big score before we hit modern times. I have never done that myself, so I'm in new territory also. Do you use Civassist 2?

No I do not use Civassist 2. I would but I do not think I need it...The extreme growth from the pyramids threw me off

Do you use Civassist 2?

I'm assuming you mean Kumquat here...

I certainly do (among some other utilities ;)). If anyone wants to see what it looks like, here is the link to one of my previous post. If you open one of the attached screenshots, you can see the minimized CivAssist window running in the upper left-hand corner.

EDIT: crosspost...

Our cities on the flood were growing to fast I had adjusted by turn 7 or so but the damage was done

huh? I dont use civ assist 2 but I found out its really usefull (mm:D) where can I Download it?? Thanks :D [edit] Never Mind!

Happy People
Paris is cranky because it is too big for now. The answer is to play with the Happy Slider and increase the luxury rate.

Paris and Orleans are building markets, which will not do much to help their unhappiness. For markets to be effective, you need to have more than two luxuries connected or imported. Right now only dyes and incense are connected. Not good.

What I Would Do
I haven't been able to follow all the discussion here, so what I say may step on someone's toes.

Given that this is a Conquest game, and that the plan is to conquer the world, who is the first target? I would suggest the Vikings, which means taking out the Aztecs along the way. Vikings have Bezerk units, which are early Marine units that can attack from offshore. Kill them early and you don't have to worry about your coastal cities being sacked. Taking the Aztecs out is just a bonus. The Aztecs are closer to your borders than anyone else. Get rid of them.

After Paris and Orleans finish their markets, let them make settlers to reduce the happy issue. Plus, you'll need settlers to fill in the territory gaps created by your expansion.

Send two setttlers to settle on the silks between France and Portugal. You need them to make the markets a bit more useful. And the new luxury will help with happiness in the non-market cities.

Gang the workers together into groups of 2 or 3 to finish tasks quicker. Roading needs 3 workers to build a road in one turn (and thus be useful the following turn). Irrigating works well with 4 workers but can survive with 2 workers. Mines works well with both, needing 6 turns to mine flatland and 12 turns to mine a hill. Wait, France is Industrious, with each worker turn equaling 1.5 worker turns counted to task completion. Thus, 2 workers can make a road in 1 turn, not 3.

Assemble the forces together for your assault, except the scouting units that are fogbusting. Republic doesn't need MPs in the cities for crowd control, so put those guys into use.

Build veteran units only. Or catapults in cities without a barracks. Don't underestimate the power of throwing rocks at cities. With enough cats you can damage each unit defending a city, making it that much easier for your other units to attack, kill and capture the city.

Remember, these are what I would do or suggest to do.

Your mileage may vary.

Have fun!

Thanks for taking the time to do the breakdown, CB. :) It allows me to see more of what's going on when I'm still cut off from looking at the save for a couple more hours... :(

Yep, a number of the things you mentioned have been discussed, but don't worry about stepping on toes. The more attention given to these important areas, the better IMO.

Building the markets should work out because we have almost secured the silks and I anticipate being able to trade with some other civs shortly. We've been pushing out enough roads by now that we should be close! I might be building a harbor in Lyons if the roads don't work. Besides that, I think that once I can stabilize the happiness, the extra commerce from the markets should be a nice boost. I don't intend to run max science for a while.

Yep, the Aztecs are going to be assaulted during my turnset. I was rather unpleasantly surprised to realize that we are in 750BC and still no warfare... :(

Hey team, I plan on playing tonight. Anyone have further opinions on the FP prebuild placement or do you want to leave it to my best judgment? :groucho:

Oh, have we received the FP message yet, anyway? I'm assuming we have enough cities, but this is a large map and I don't remember the cutoff amount.

The "cities about to riot" alert makes it worth using CA 2 alone, and all the other stuff helps too. This time I am not able to use it, and I really miss it. I would need a 22 meg download to install it, and with dial-up that could be six hours. I heartily recommend it, it's like an extra dozen advisors keeping track of the stuff that you might miss.
No aching toes here;) I have been wondering when to end the REX myself, and i think I said something about going to war after my turns, and I think we are ready now, time to kick butt! Aztecs, Vikings, Chinese, Portuguese, Byzantines in that order is what I'd do in a solo game(of course as situation changes, so could that order). Good luck Othniel!

I use MapStat, part of the CrpSuite (Civ Replay Suite). It has a much smaller RAM footprint than CAII. True, it is not as pretty as CAII, but for me it works fine.

And the download is about 2.5MB, not too long over dial up.

Like CAII, it will tell you when cities are about to riot, if you refer to it during the turn. It will refresh each turn, but it does not have an in-game button like CAII.

I use MapStat in game because my PC is old enough to go to school. I use CAII outside of the game.
