SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

Either way I'd like orders for 8pm GMT Tuesday the 11th of March

@dis regarding the deadline, I assume you mean Tuesday the 9th, which is today? I just read the 11th before, which is actually Thursday, unless maybe I have shifted dimensionally :( I haven't read the rules yet, and the deadline hour is probably before I can get online again, asuming I have the time to organise myself here. Assuming I don't send orders, can I just have a generic long-term investment turn?

Yes I know that sucks, but I fear I have gotten in over my head here, while I attempt to update my own NES and write stories for SLYNES too. Daftpanzer is frightened by tables with lots of decimal values. Perhaps I can operate as a kind of eccentric high-level administrator leaving the detailed details to you? :)

EDIT: I really like the system map, but everything else is confuzzling me personally at this time. Advice need! It seems like mining is the way to go for me, but I need construction lvl 1 (I assume the mine I start with in one of my habitats is just a freebie?), and that is 15/4 turns away. As for my e, I guess maybe I should build another habitat, assuming it starts with population and a base amount of 'e'. I can't work out how much it costs (what is an .ods file and how to I use it?) or if it would do any good to go ahead and colonise the metal-rich moon IV:a already. Anyway, looks like ships are not needed right now!

Research is gained fastest by population, or universities in high pop habs. That may be the best way for you to go Daft, to get Construction I.

.ods uses open office, which I also downloaded exclusively for this NES.

Orders should be due on Thursday, not today. Also these rules were much larger than I anticipated. I feel like I'm drowning trying to read them :(

OOC: Orders are to be due on Tuesday, not Thursday. Ignore kentharu's post :p

But Dis states twice that orders are due on the 11th... It IS the 8th right now so.... *confused*

Anyway Dis tried to get the ship designer and it doesn't work for macs sadly. Is there any way around this? Right now I only have access to this hellish communist-infested piece of technology that is an iMac.

OOC: Dis was very specific that he would do the update on Tuesday. I've spoken to him at lengths upon this.

And you won't need the ship designer for a while; I fiddled around with it and everything just costs too much ;)

Anycase society description sent.

All ye cybernetically improved races, let this be a warning to ye

Yea none of the calculators will work for me but I sent orders anyway, hopefully they are correct. If you can Dis, please PM me back if my orders are wrong some how.

@Kal'thzar: Thanks I might msg you tomorrow about it.

Yeah sorry guys, total brainfart on my part regarding the date, I mean tuesday the ninth (i.e. today), but since this is my error I'll be forgiving ;).

@Daft, I realized the tables were scary, which is why I made those open office spreadsheets to auto calculate things - you just need to stick stuff in and it'll give the results. .ods iis the spreadsheet part of Open Office, a freeware office distribution.

Additionally I decided everyone should get some free techs (three of them in fact) for the first update, so you can get construction 1 with those and build another mine right away. The mine you already have was a freebie yes. Constructing a base on Heze IV will require - a) building an Alpha Beta base there (the cost is in the Habitat Calculator * 4 for the distance modifier), and b) spending 2e to shift 1 on your population there. You then want to upgrade that base to a Beta and start building mines and farms. However this will cost a good bit so I'd recommend building a mine in your current habitat first to get some more e.

Its got something of a learning curve, but once you've grasped it the orders are really quite simple, I do hope you stay!

@Kentharu, your orders were fine, but I guess you missed the free techs discussion on the last page - which ones do you want? As to the calculators, do you have the mac distribution of open office? If that doesn't work, what spreadsheet program do you have on your machine, as I should be able to save them in that format hopefully.

The Politics of the Kations

The Kations society initially descended scientific team exploring the rift to incorporate their environmental armour into their very bodies. The team was lead by a group of several Principal Investigators, however, there was no one person in charge and this led to a rather diverse approach to solving their principle problem. Broadly speaking this can be split into two groups, the Cybernetics Scientists and the Biotech Scientists. Both saw an opportunity and a method to improve the body of the individual to its absolute peak, both had been unrealised so far, with but minor implementations. There was an additional advantage in that the Kations were descended from genetically modified stock, this allowed them greater insight into the scientific problems they faced, and generally made the people happier. Thus the rather chaotic organisation survived for a time, together visiting new worlds and gaining as much research as possible.

However, after the Tumult and the landing on Zavi VIa this began to breakdown, with no specific person in charge it fell to a vote and the Cybernetic Scientists gained the first 'Presidency'. As times progressed the President was referred to more and more as the Principal Investigator and the party leaders were referred to such as such less and less. This was made formal in the Second Constitutional Reform act[1], an informal constitution was adopted to allow for greater flexibility and the rights and freedoms of the people were codified. This allowed the people who had supported the scientists (pilots, repair crews, cleaners) an equal say in the running the nascent nation.

The adoption of the softer sciences had been hard, for instance many had looked down on economics as something unquantifiable and too hard to be able to legislate about properly. However after the first economic recession hit Zavi VIa the Kations slowly began to adapt to those professions that had never been included on what had been an exploration mission. It was around this time that a third party, "the Third Way", sprung up based on what had been the non-scientist members of the mission and finding new found acceptance of things that weren't strictly to do with Cybernetics or Biotechnology, this third party gained minor power, but has yet to overshadow the Cybernetics or Biotechnologists strangle hold on power. This has put a certain scientific bent to politics, however whenever the Third Way proposed a popular or otherwise good idea the other two parties quickly cannibalised it and spat out their own version.

More recently the ability to plan further afield that just Zavi VIa has meant that politics has exploded with an almost infinite amount of fourth parties, all equally minor and all spouting another idea with what to do with their new found abilities. Some wish to simply get off the rock called Zavi IVa and get on with the initial mission statement, others realise the realities of the situation and are pushing for major development of the system, and extraction of the resources of the Zavi IV system.

Diplomacy as well has seen a small but significant spark, the current party in power, the Cybernetics has had a cautious approach to the Vazan, who are in some ways much more limited than the Kations, but in others much more powerful.

[1] The First being the rather hasty and well meaning adaptation of the scientists mission statement into something at least approaching the framework a country should be run by...

ooc:I hope I got the scientist groupings right, would those be the appropriate tech groups dis?

Cool story Kal' though the first sentence is...odd. Divide the scientists however you like, the fields are merely an imposition on the nebulousness of science (also nearly all advances take more than 1 field). A useful term for a planet and all its moons is 'Circum-[Gas Giant]', in this case circum-VI, meaning 'everything around' (see real life circumjovial).

@Circuit, I'll be around from now until late in the evening, so feel free to PM or AIM me (Disenfrancised) with any questions or problems.

I didn't miss I just completely forgot about it >.<

Thanks Dis I'll resend my orders some time today. (before the deadline)

No worries mattnumbers! The deadline was slackened due to my own incompetence in posting deadlines.

Just waiting on Circuit now, all but Kaus and Zavi stuff written and stat-updated.

Did you get the most recent society creation PM I sent you Dis? :)
