SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

OOC; Great and timely update as usual! It pains me to see that my government would keep the truth away from its people though :(

I believed I wrote in my orders that all new population growth (aside from those on Gemstar II) should be directed towards the gamma factory habitat. What's done is done, but I would appreciate it if in the future that would be remembered :)

pop growth occurs at the end of the turn, after movement phase

OOC: I am aware of that and saw that on the rules, but dis moved them automatically for me the last few turns so i assumed that would be the case as well. :)

Great speedy update :)

I had a sneaky suspicion that investigating the ruins required some form of s, too bad I had to rush the orders :(

OOC: You could take the 'Al :)

Notes:
[1]Kraznaya: Investigating the Ruins costs 10s and requires Social 3 – its there on the Tech tree. You alos neglected the alpha habitat beachhead on Heze IIIb, so I paid the 9e cost for that with the 15e you assigned to archaeology and saved the surplus 6e.

Wait, I'm not exactly sure what happened here. I built a Beta habitat, which according to the rules doesn't need an alpha beachhead?

By the way, does volatiles give me a bonus to Materials research lab?

Great update! Though, I think I'm missing an University at my Gamma habitat.

Yes, you have 37s.

Shouldn't I be receiving 10 s from my energy RC. Or 8 s at the very least.

OOC: I am aware of that and saw that on the rules, but dis moved them automatically for me the last few turns so i assumed that would be the case as well. :)

Not since the turn order rules turned up, it was just all your growth was in that habitat.

Shouldn't I be receiving 10 s from my energy RC. Or 8 s at the very least.

8, I forgot to switch on the hot bonus.

This looks intriguing; is there still a way to join as an original civilization?

Send me a PM with some sort of civilisation idea and I'll consider if its feasible/how to fit you in - turning up on a ship ala the Akresians is the standard entry. Or you can take the 'Al if you like ;).

Wait, I'm not exactly sure what happened here. I built a Beta habitat, which according to the rules doesn't need an alpha beachhead?

What the other guys said - the Alpha is a beachhead you need to build first on any new planet. Luckily they're pretty cheap.

Map stuff:

Doesn't have the 1 Ground force I built this turn, and you still haven't moved over a GF from Zavi V to VIa or the farms I built 2 turns ago on Zavi IV.

And the map displays an extra pop which I don't have.

Arrgh I always screw up your map - comes of doing it last (you better get someone to colonise the systems below you ;).

By the way, does volatiles give me a bonus to Materials research lab?

No, only the fancy resources do.

The Wrath of a Vengeful God

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Attributed to Edmund Burke

“The eminent Mr. Burke certainly meant well. Yet history has been fraught with horrible, evil men who brought so much good. I certainly do not think that the ends justify the means. There are simply no ends, or means. They are not of importance. There is only power, pure and raw power.” Doctor Kaiser Fuji

It was hard work. The ground coral had to be eliminated on an hourly basis. There were no machines, not yet, and not for a long while. They had to clear it manually. This was an around the clock activity, with groups moving around in shifts. Life was not pleasant.

But he was getting into excellent physical shape, for the first time in his life.

He could feel his abdominal muscles when he moved. It was as if his entire upper body had become encased by an unknown material. But it had been a good shift. More and more people were coming to Gemstar II and life was become immensely more enjoyable. For my part, I was come to rather enjoy the standard porridge with pieces of a century-old egg. There was certainly something delectable in the way it tasted. I was in the middle of enjoying this fine lunch when I knew I was being summoned. Two soldiers walked in and zeroed in on me. It was pretty obvious, considering that I was the only non-Lantian in the room.

“Doctor Rosenthal?”

“I am indeed Doctor Rosenthal. I didn’t think it was even necessary to ask.”

I couldn’t resist smiling at the young soldiers’ embarrassment. It had seemed like a good decision at the time to create a standing army. The failure of the economists and the managers to correctly estimate the amount of funds required for the volatiles mine was thought to possibly lead to mass riots. That did not happen.

“Doctor, I’m afraid you’ll have to come with us.”

“My dear boy, I admit I rather enjoy living in Gemstar II. Something about the way the sun shines in the morning.” That was a lie of course. The sun wasn’t even visible as a coherent celestial object in the sky. But the two young Lantian soldiers probably didn’t know that, or anything much for that matter.

But apparently they got annoyed at my attitude, lifted me up, and marched me to the awaiting shuttle.

Meeting of the Executive Council Minutes

President Kaiser Fuji, Vice President Jonathan Lee, Senate Imperator Christopher Ma, House Premier Herbert Phung-Hang, Minister Nathan Rosenthal, General Winston Kim and Doctor L. Wang of the Learned Council Present.

President Fuji: I thank all of you for coming to this quick meeting.

Doctor Wang: And the purpose of this meeting…?

President Fuji: Of course Learned Doctor, there are reports coming into the media of starvation in some of our habitats and…

General Kim: False I hope? My forces cannot possibly maintain peace and order in the event of a famine. Not with our forces.

Vice-President Lee: I am afraid that the reports are not entirely inaccurate. We have been slowly cutting food supplies to the outer regions.

*general murmuring*

Minister Rosenthal:
And the public is not being informed of this?

Premier Phung-Hang: No. There would be mass panic and subsequent chaos in the streets.

Minister Rosenthal: And how can we possibly not inform them? This is outrageous! We…

President Fuji: Be silent Nathan! It’s not if we were just hoarding the supplies. There *are* no supplies. And there will not be any until after the volatiles mines go up. Once they do, our problem is essentially solved.

Doctor Wang: Lee, how much more time is needed before the volatile mines go up?

President Fuji: Madame Doctor, the mines will be up within three months.

Doctor Wang: And the food situation will be quickly and decisively resolved?

President Fuji: Yes.

Vice-President Lee: Furthermore, the casualties will be minimal. We project that the numbers will be in the hundreds to the low thousands- there will be no great alarm, it will be seen as simply the further weakening of their respective immune systems to pre-existing conditions.

Minister Rosenthal: I am amazed that you consider the lives of hundreds or even thousands to be of little concern. My God! They’re going to die because there won’t be enough food and you tell me that we’re not going to tell them?

Doctor Wang: Doctor Rosenthal, calm yourself. I share your concern. But we do not live in ordinary times. Every year that we stay upon this barren Gemstar system is another year we slowly fade away. The matter is closed. President, you have my approval.

Minister Nathan Rosenthal Resigns!

In the saddest news today, Minister Rosenthal has offered his resignation to the Fuji Administration. Citing his remarkable successes in dealing with both the Republic of Ik and the ‘Al, he states that he believes the tasks delegated to him has been completed. And after having so distinguished himself in serving the Republic, he plans to return to private life.

The Minister has made plans to travel to Gemstar II and there take part in the great colonization process to bring increasingly levels of volatiles to our farms. It is a great thing that our Republic has people like Doctor Rosenthal who are willing to do so much for the continued prosperity of our nation.

Good evening I’m Safa Badra with your news at 7. In an address to the public, mining corporation Basmah Inc. have recently acquired the mining rights to the newly expanded facilities on the Errai X moon colony. President and CEO Fadwa Basmah stated that construction of mining operations would be completed within the year. Locals on the facility are celebrating the new expansion, hailing it as a break through in Ik expansion. New jobs are expected to bring in an excess of 8,000,000 Afshati profit over the next 2 years as well as provide key elements to improving farming on Taik. The TFU (Taik Farmers Union) has already anticipated a surplus of produce, causing prices to lower as food supplies of various sorts increase. After last years hunger scare, many are breathing a sigh of relief.

The IEP (Interstellar Exploration Program) has recommenced flights to unknown star systems. A spokesperson recently stated that the current goal of the IEP is to reach Kaus Ywithin the year. The spokesperson stated that IEP missions would continue to be accompanied by at least 1 Abu class ship for security.

The DSRT has announced the commencement of 3 new ship designs, all designated as Multi-Purpose crafts, for the coming year. The spokesperson from the DSRT declined to comment on any specifics regarding these vehicles however he did state that the new ships would be in line with a new push towards colonizing other star systems. This has led many to speculate that the intended ship is indeed the first of hopefully many colonization ships to be made. The Prime Chancellor himself addressed a crowd at the Al-Hazred Institute of High Energy Phsyics three days ago regarding the new goal for colonization saying, quote.

“It has been the dream of mankind, since he first looked up at the stars, to touch them, to find them, and to mark them with his foot steps. Today I come to tell you that this is no longer a dream, it is a reality! Ladies and Gentlemen I am here to announce the designing of the first vessel capable of long range travel and long term support. The new Yassammek vessel, will house a recycling facility, capable of resupplying ships within our fleet after a year, two years, even three years of travel. That dream of mankind can, and will be ours given enough time, and hard work.”

Many political opponents claim that the new project of colonization is nothing but a waste of resources that could be put to better use within the Errai system, however these voices of dissent have been faint and few.

At noon today the Prime Chancellor addressed the Senate on his goals for the next 4 years, being the remainder of his term of office. One such goal, which caught many politicians and senators by surprise, was a resolution to reduce the term of the Prime Chancellor from 10 years, to 6 years. Here is a clip from his address.

“That is why I propose a reduction of the term of service of the office of the Prime Chancellor. Many of you will perhaps be shocked by this, as I have, in the past, neglected to comment on the rather long term which I, and those who will follow me, would have held. However it is, in my mind, a moral imperative, that we allow the democratic election of our leaders to take place, within a reasonable amount time. Ten years, is not reasonable. It would only encourage tyranny, and the jealous guardianship of the power which the office of the Prime Chancellor holds. This great nation was founded on the principles of fair representation, and equality. Without these principles, our nation, our people, would be nothing. We, the public servants of our people, must never allow ourselves to be corrupted by greed, and pride. Our duty is to…”

Shocking as it may have been the news was received by the Senate with a round of applause from all parties, including the opposition. The Prime Chancellor’s press secretary later commented that Rasheed intended to have a vote on the issue within the coming week. He did however, clarify, that Rasheed would not be resigning and would indeed serve the remainder of his term. Some political analysts have claimed that this reversal by Prime Chancellor Rasheed has been due rumors of his recent conversion to Izla. Rasheed himself neglected to mention Izla, or Alla within his address. Most believe that this was simply a calculated attempt to not offend the majority of agnostics who population Ik.

On a related note, the FoA (Fellowship of Alla) has reported and increase in the number of new members within its organization. The organization has been growing steadily within the last years by 5% per year, though many simply attribute this to the organization growing as population continues to expand. Leader of the Fellowship of Alla, Brother Abdul Al-Mutarak delivered an address the previous day stating that he would not comment on his position on recent political events. This has been the trend of the FoA, who have repeatedly stated that the FoA is not a political organization, only a spiritual organization who’s goals were to give individuals a higher meaning in life. Al-Mutarak did comment on the new exploration goals of the IEP, stating that they were “in the true spirit of knowledge and exploration”.

In international news, meetings regarding the renewal of the Ik-Akresian treaty that had been postponed after the recent turmoil within the Ik government, is now scheduled to be resumed within the coming weeks. Press Secretary of the Prime Chancellor stated that “Prime Chancellor Rasheed is fully committed negotiations of a fair Ik-Akresian treaty”. The Senate has also backed Rasheed’s proposed treaty, including opposition parties like the Al-Hassan.

Talks been the Furthest Republic and the Ik have continued to be pleasant however Prime Chancellor’s offer to allow the Furthest to become part of the republic have continued to be rebuffed. Instead the Prime Chancellor has chosen to take a different path, pushing for a shared Errai X second moon. However the Prime Chancellor as requested that, should the moon be shared, it should remain demilitarized.

That’s all for News at 7, I’m Safa Badra for TBC, now turning it over to sports with Mohammad Hassan, Mohammad?
