SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

“What do I care for your suffering? Pain, even agony, is no more than information before the senses, data fed to the computer of the mind. The lesson is simple: you have received the information, now act on it. Take control of the input and you shall become master of the output.” — Chairman Sheng-ji Yang, “Essays on Mind and Matter”

PI Aiur had commissioned a great expansion of Virtual Reality Technology, some had even attributed the above quote to her, the purpose was to take some of the technology recently developed and push the boundaries until they ceased to exist.

Project Log

...

PI Aiur personally came down by the lab, she wished to see what the fuss was about. We set her up in one of the Minkar IIIa that one of the techies from Genesis set up. She appeared quite pleased with the results, although she wanted get our personnel thoughts on the other various programmes we had developed.

...

Had to dive into the recreational area again, just checking out the final product. We've managed to solve most of the bugs in the virtual world we've set up although there is still the SD [1] issue. Most of the rec-rooms look quite good, we've got the planets of Zavi covered and we've also tested some various other worlds; the Urth simulator has proven popular. I've taken to diving into the world on my downtime, its nice to be able to control my environment and have it free from other people.

....

Tested the networking abilities cross planet, we can get a good range on this and our data protection seems up to scratch. Of course only the latest Comp Grads are working on this so we have all the best people!

....

One of the Military types came round today, seemed quite keen on the military simulator that Iyur had developed, he's signed a non-disclosure so he hasn't breathed a word of what he's up to, but he coded the Zavi I environment so its gotta be dangerous.

I've been stuck in meetings with all the sociology types they want to do a 'soft release' to gauge the effects it will have on the wider public. One of them had me code up a personnel project for them, testing the variables in social groups, he seemed particularly keen on testing what a multicultural planet would look like, and I don't mean like the Vazan on the same planet with us on Zavi VIa but different 'cultures' operating together [2]. The whole idea is rather odd.

....

We had a soft release today, it went quite well. The SD issue is actually balancing what might be addiction, all in all though its quite exciting!

[1] SD refers to Sensory Deadening, basically the techies can't figure out why after about 5 hours the body stops being able to respond well to being plugged into the virtual world. Its not a show stopper it just means that you have to unplug for a number of hours (more than 5 though!). Thats the most serious issue with the tech, but there are a horde of other problems that are bundled along with this which are mostly related to tech issues.

[2] Just an observation, we have large planets of monocultures. This is nothing like Earth. A lot of the other factions also have this too. Kations just find the idea a bit weird

Indeed there is very little mid ground between the isolated and the cosmopolitain. Thus the people here are used to backwoods Kentucky and Highland Japan levels of cultural mixing OR the New York style everyone ground together to make money, a Europe of seperate entities but closely placed would be quite alien.

No update as of yet (45% done), I've just remembered I have to go see a play this evening and thus won't be able to complete it after work today. Probably some time tomorrow instead.

An update nearly a week after the last one - I'm so ashamed!

Update 11: Waters runnin' in the wrong direction...

The Ik continued their system wide expansion, but it soon became obvious that the planets of Errai wouldn't be sufficient to contain their ambition for much longer as the Prime Chancellor bombastically announced the commissioning of design work on an interstellar colonisation and trade fleet and the continuing exploration of nearby systems. These new ships would be completed within three years if all the available Ik scientific resources were thrown behind them, but the exploration would happen right away as the package of Ik sensor components and its guardian Sloop jumped towards the star Kaus, and its interesting political situation. In more local concerns the long established base on the inner moon of the outermost planet was finally expanded and its water ice was soon being merely exported to the inner system, greatly helping the closed-cycle farms on the habitat orbiting Taik and lifting the food cap on the Ik holdings substantially, though more farms would be needed to really exploit the volatiles. On the interplanetary politics front the Ik government continued pressuring the Furtherest Republic into joining their society, using both threats of both Akresian aggression with their new ship, and quiet mutterings of possible Ik action to cow the dwellers on the lonely moon. To no avail as of yet, the republic seemingly having inherited the 'Al predilection for privacy and peace. The Ik also seem to have forgotten the Akresian security payments thanks to all their political turmoil of the previous year, something the Akresians were careful not to remind them about. The cause of those conniptions, the younger Rasheed, was still being confined to house arrest in a secure family compound, his cooperation kept with threats to relocate him to the newly established facilities on the ice moon. The elder Rasheed seemed more willing to accept the dissidents, attempting to bring them back into the fold by promising to reduce his remaining term of office from ten years to six, whilst seeking behind the scenes assurances that power would continue to remain with his clan and ideology. The Ik continued to make strong showings in scientific development, certainly gaining a huge lead over their Akresian neighbours, if not the other contacted societies.

The Akresians for their part managed to finally get their space habitat off the ground (heh), even though the expensive radiation shielding consumed nearly all their resources accumulated over several years. This might have staved off their food problems and allowed them to concentrate on the important business of planting the Akresian boot on the galaxies face, if it weren't for the sudden explosion in their population after having had its primary limiter removed. By the end of the year the number of half starved young individuals who had returned to the workforce had managed to hit the food ceiling once again and began demanded more farms or an improvement in farm efficiency. Putting up another orbiting habitat could be actualised as early as next year with current resource projections, however further advances in maths or propulsion would be needed to keep the orbital dynamics untangled.

Much like the Ik the Lantians were also made working on the ship designs necessary to maintain an interstellar presence their primary focus this year. Perhaps further along towards the goal than the Ik, the Institute of Aerospace Architects graduated the Hauxi Scout/Support ship from computer simulations to a working template, and the flowering of this IS workhorse inspiring them to begin on a new classified design – the Laoniu. Few other events happened to the Lantians this year, the rumoured successes of the Ik bouncing though the Ansibyl spurred the Lantians to work hard on the field of megastructure engineering, and a previously panicky and paranoid government began to relax as the food crisis appeared to be averted. They even began recalling the political exiles from menial work on Gemstar II, and instituted new government portals on the datasphere to greatly boost transparency and efficiency. If not a golden age, the Lantians were certainly enjoying a silver age of learning and good fellowship.

The Esani continue their shadowy and unnumbered projects, starting a metals mining facility on the small rocky world of Heze II. Some Esani commentators wondered at this course of action by the ill-defined government, considering the much larger and metals rich world of Heze I would be just as easy to settle on and give extensive system wide economic bonuses. The Government retorts that they have all the time in the universe to settle the Heze system, and that no foreigners would ever be turning up to take their heavy metals and exotic gases...also they think the dunes of Heze II look really pretty in the morning. At the other end of the system the sociologists and archaeologists continue working on ways they could decode the strange micrometer runes on the vast trees, and think they'll be done in a year or two – tops!

The Ik probe and escort arriving at circum-Kaus experienced something of a shock – unlike the empty systems explored so far, or the distant rumours of quiet Lantian and Vazan homeworlds, Kaus was a bustling clutch of worlds with nearly every usable world already having some sort of settlement, and a total system wide population twice that of Errai! After carefully quenching his masers the Ik Captain initiated contact along the 'ultrapolite' part of his protocol chart. He soon found both factions in the system were strident and somewhat militaristic, the paranoid and careful Soulons holding most of the worlds and the cunning and spiritual Gardeners the majority of the population on their delightful world of Kaus II. He also found that the Gardeners were well in advance of the Ik in some technologically areas, and that their IP squadron alone could burn the Combined Fleet from the sky. Certainly something for those back on Taik to ponder...

Before the arrival of the Ik, who seemed brash, arrogant, and callow to both Kaus societies, a great deal of bitter upheaval had occurred between the Gardeners and the Soulon. Despite the now massive population majorities now held by Kaus III, the lag in re-districting meant that the arch conservative outer worlds still held the controlling fraction of the Soulon Interworld Senate and would maintain this hold for the next two years. Eager to use this influence to clamp down on 'corrupting' Gardener memes, the Outer Worlds forced through a raft of anti-gardener legislation. A Soulon would now lose citizenship for staying more than a year on Kaus II, all non-governmental data channels with the Gardener datasphere would now be closed behind a giant firewall, and all Gardeners working on Kaus III would now be restricted to short stay tourist visas and all those working in the new universities would promptly be fired. These measures, especially when accompanied with generous kickbacks to long term development projects on the outer worlds rather incensed some among the population of Kaus III even as they calmed protesters on the outer worlds. When it came to light that the Senate had also suppressed a report by Gardener researchers that the ecology of Kaus III was being made unstable by the industrial actions of the League even more anger was generated. This was expressed with the rise of two new parties, one demanding a restoration of friendly relations with the Gardeners and more ecological care taken with the world, the other a group seeking further independence for Kaus III from both the Gardeners and the Soulon. The Senate was certainly in a bind, and its efforts to improve communication and lessen corruption, as well as a biotech research centre to double check the Gardener findings, were generally seen as too mild by the Kaus III hotheads and pandering to a bunch of whiners by the Outer Worlds. Perhaps the only thing that went well was the continued explorations of their long range scout probe 'Voyager' as it successfully transited to Azimech this year, a system at the heart of the Spinward Lobe of the Hydra Tuft – possibly travelling where no human has gone before.

The Gardeners muttered darkly about Soulon paranoia and general filthiness over this blacklisting and blocking (not that the closing of the data channels did much – there were enough zombie spam sites and deep cover agents/teachers that the Doctrines of Kadesh were easily still drifting throughout the Soulon datasphere, if somewhat taking on strange new forms without the supervision of the central office). Instead they turned to higher and simpler things as they expanded their food production in the newly opened southern hemisphere and made tremendous breakthroughs in four desperate fields of scientific endeavour. The highly publicised papers indicating long term degradation in the Kaus III biosphere actually received rather more public anger than the Soulon actions, and people began to demand an expansion of the fleet in order to force the Soulon into dismantling their mines on the small planet. One of the most interesting fruits of Gardener Research was their discovery of yet another way to harness the spatial transcendence effect – the Twist Drive using carefully concentrated raw energy to tear space apart rather than the elaborate geometry of the Burst Drive or the microscale effects of the Manifold or Charm drives.[1]

In Zavi space the Vazan are so concerned with their internal development matters that they withhold once again from sending their Probe out exploring. Instead they expand their living space on the homeworld with a new Gamma habitat, though they were a considerable distance away from filling their current living spaces, and make several important technological discoveries, much to the ire of the Kations who believe that the mantle of 'scientific frontrunner' should belong to them. Relations between the two descendent of the Diamond Network have never been rosier however, and despite the mutual contempt and disdain it has been shown that they can work together and get along. The Kations would be keen on the Vazan sharing some of their interstellar discoveries however. The Kations too are rather introspective this turn and focus on their new, as yet unnamed, capital world of Zavi V to the detriment and dislike of their other system wide holdings. A new space habitat is orbited to increase food production with its hydroponic farms, the ruthlessly efficient Kations having determined that this will yield a slight fraction more food than anywhere else. The location of this space habitat is interesting though, as rather than put it about one of their inhabited worlds the Kations chose to place it around the brilliant milky blue orb of the Gas Giant Zavi VI – the habitat intended to be a stepping stone to aerostat gas mines in the gas giants upper atmosphere. Though actualisation of this plan is a long way off due to expense, the projected returns will be considerable and probably highly necessary considering the Kations were already using half of their current possible volatile reserves to keep their economic system running, and the only other potential site for gas mines is the Vazan claimed Zavi I. Finally the Kations of the capital, in a bold plan to lessen unhappiness with the crowded conditions there, undertake a massive effort to upgrade the local datasphere to offer fully interactive virtual environments, the rumoured favourite pastime of the idle elite in the Kingdom age. The complex vistas that could be accessed proved highly popular to keep people moderately happy and even spurred immigration from the other Kation habitats, and for once it was the Vazan who were jealous of the Kation's toys.

Random Events

Studying the microscopic fauna of Gemstar II gives some enterprising Lantian researchers ideas about possible dry nanotech designs: +2 s to materials.

Karmically Blessed Societies:

Stories hoooooooo: +1 lucky roll to the Kations, Ik and Lantians
Long term planning pleases Thoth: +1 lucky roll to the Gardeners

Random Stats
-Most centralised societies: the Gardeners, Akresians and Lantians have 100%, 100% and 94% of their total populations on their respective homeworlds.
-Most dispersed: The Soulon have less than 50% of their population on any one world.
-Most popular Lantian children's show: Story time with Jian Bing

Notes:
[1] New Ship component discovered, the Twist Drive: Deep within the belly of the twist drive craft, tremendous energies are employed to torture a rift in space-time through which the ship can throw itself. Only one unit (of size 2) is required per ship, but greater ship mass needs more energy to force the twist – expensive but the excess power can be used for other things when the ship in normal space.
Mk1: Requires 1 unit of surplus power per 7 ship mass

OOC: Great update!

How come my population growth has been so small in the last few turns while other states have like 5+ growth? :( Am I that unlucky?

Nice update:

Two things

The uhmmm.... Ground forces on the map are still displayed one Zavi V :p

And my energy s spending is wrong, it should have hit level 2 this update, might have been because I divided my S spending into pop and Research centre s (last turn 18 RCs and 8 Pop s was spent on Energy totalling 26 s), I'll combine the two this time if it makes it easier.

Yeah I forgot the 8 pop research you have energy 2. You should really have reminded me about move that troop in your orders :p.

New Random Event:
A space time anomoly causes all troops on the outer moon of the Zavi system to be teleported to Zavi V, baffling Kation scientists.

I should have Construction III, and I also think there's a little something wrong with my research, but I'm not on the same computer as my orders. EDIT: Found it, I put 2s to start work on Social III.

Also, I got dibs on the manliest interstellar drive!

*******

Yriel had arrived on Aranahra [1] from Zavi III but mere weeks ago on a government sponsored research project. He had been chosen on the basis of his excellent construction design and his academic background on basic space ship designs.

A series of interviews progressed rapidly, first a generic academic interview asking him probing questions, basically screening out the chaff. Next a series of tests to separate the truly gifted from the merely intelligent. Lastly a group interview with what appeared to be a mixed group of military types and the people actually involved in the project.

Having signed a dozen secrecy act documents, he was then accepted into the specially provided accommodation (effectively keeping him separate from the rest of the population).

The projects basic objective was the design of a exploration vessel, capable of traversing the void between stars without the need for significant resupply, it would also need to be self-sufficient in maintenance and repairs. The military had also imposed what it thought would be the minimum acceptable armament without imposing too much bloat into the budget.

The government had indicated that it would purchase a pair of such vessels once they were designed and all the faults were worked out, this latter point had been particularly plaguing the Computation guys, who had already told everyone involved that the ships weren't going to be operating independently due to a lack of processing power, but more importantly had been sucking up resources in implementing the mechanics for moving a large object through a rift in space-time.

So Yriel got to work designing the more formal structure of the craft that they were to build. Being restricted to the requirement of military efficiency over Kation self-expression allowed him to think more in terms of what was important for survival than what the customer wanted.

His basic design was as such: Three squashed spheroids in a line, housing the majority of the required features, an Engineering and Power segment, a Computational and the 'Charm' Drive segment and a living section with the required recyclers. Sensors and Weapons were housed on wings in the same plane as the squashed spheroids, two large wings at the back held the lasers and routed power from the power spheroids.
The large wings were also utilised for cooling systems for the massively powerful lasers, with only a small fraction of heat recovered and recycled overheating was a serious issue for warships. Designing the weapon around the cooling systems meant that an idiot captain couldn't fire the weapons and burn the ship to a crisp having had his coolants blown away. After all, all engineers lived by the motto of making the product idiot proof, and that was the reason why his pen lid had a hole in one end. The smaller wings at the front housed the sensors, both passive and active, this information was linked to the computers for a range of tasks, from weapon ranging to scanning a planet and star system for vital information.

Yriel had got this basic design down in about 7 months, by which time the finer parts of the project were starting to intrude on the more advanced sections. It had become obvious that of the things that a project could be, quick and cheap wasn't it, quality was important to all involved, especially the government who were looking for a big project to pay off and push up support for their party and had seemed unusually adverse to cutting corners. [2]

But the Project advanced none the less, and the Kations first IS Craft was born, The Corsair.
