SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

Um... I got a 4th tech in computation... not Energy. But you can give me that to! =D

Ah piss, thats what comes of doing stuff at 2 in the morning and reading the wrong column. Well nuts to writing up computation now, you'll just have to wait until next update to find out what it does - I'm still annoyed at your insistence on making me have to write lots of extra prose :p (Also it doesn't enable anything on its own so your not missing out on anything).

@Shadowbound, you never replied what you wanted your s spending to be, so I just redid the spending from last update which didn't feature any construction spending.

That's because Construction hit III two updates ago. I've built ships with Burst Drives, it's just a stat error.

How much does a Twist Drive cost?

How much does a Twist Drive cost?

Ah yes, you probably should have pointed that out earlier - its been like that for a while ;).

The Twist drive costs 11e, it is built into the calculator I just forgot to update the components list display. Also about that Burst Drive - forgot to charge you the 25s for your first IS drive of a particular type. Since its only one probe and it could be argued the Gardeners wouldn't bother properly checking something they were giving to the Soulon I won't make you pay it unless you build additional Burst Drive ships.

The excel version of the new ship designer doesn't open properly, and thus can't be used. Is anyone else having a problem with it?:(

What error messages are you getting? It could be any number of problems...

In addition HALT ALL SHIP DESIGN! A quick review reveals the Twist Drive is massively more cost effective than the Burst or Manifold Drives for nearly all ship sizes once you start powering them with fusion cores rather than the fission core of my initial design work, ditto the Charm drive. I intended them to better in some circumstances but right now they out-perform the other two drive types even where those are meant to better.

Thus there will shortly be the following nerfs:
-The Twist Drive will change from requiring [Ship Size]/7 surplus power to requiring 2+([Ship Mass]/4) surplus power. The Twist Drive unit will also now be of size 3 rather than 2 and increase the amount of cooling the ship needs.
-The Charm Drive will now require six computation modules in a fleet to operate. Computation modules themselves will be changed, now requiring -1 power, and increasing the amount of cooling the ship needs.

For comparison here are some charts showing how great a deal the current version of each are and how you Burst and Manifold drive kids are chumps. In the new version they are now only more efficent if you set up the ship to use them correctly.

New version of ship calculator coming shortly.

@Kal'thzar, you can adjust the Cosair if you want.

So... I have the worst IS drive. Can my discount in ship design be applied to all IS drives? Or must it still only be burst drives.

Look at the chart, burst drives are by far the cost effective for ships smaller than size 19 (i.e. considerably bigger than any ship yet built). Smaller ships have a range of functions, and I'm sure you can think of strategies to maximise their usage. Plus burst drives are pretty great for building cargo vessels and thus trade routes.

Plus these are only the Mk1 lines of the particular drives :p.

Huh, the new ship designer works fine for me. I don't know what the problem was with the one posted along with the update.:dunno:

OOC: Great update! :D

Greetings and well met! As the peaks of the mountains might seem high from far away, so do the dark skies of space. Fellow travelers might be foes in the cities, but they are friends in the wilderness: we are more than willing to entertain an exchange of maps between our two states.

Greeting and well met! For as friends' meet and talk with one another upon a daily basis, we ask that the peace and goodwill between us never fade and be renewed constantly.

dis, you missed the beta habitat I put on Rin'Esani. One of the Gamma Hab's pops and the mine was also supposed to be on the beta.

What's the problem with my planet's name?

Krige is the name of the actress that played the Borg Queen in ST: First Contact. I thought it'd make for a good name.

There is nothing wrong with it, I just found the idea funny.

@Kraznaya: Oops, consider it changed for update 13 and you have an extra 5 e.
@Kal'thzar: Haha, you're lucky I don't have a team of developers working to make stuff balanced.

@Kraznaya: Oops, consider it changed for update 13 and you have an extra 5 e.

Actually I looked at it again and realized I tried to put a habitat where there wasn't a habitat slot. Can I just get the 20e for the hab and 10e for the mine refunded? I guess I lose 6e that the Gamma mine (which was planned to be on the new beta hab) is currently "producing."

"Sha'du, if we don't handle this perfectly the public will hang us"
-PI Aiur, on learning of the economic crisis

The Biotechnologist backbenchers morale was high. The story had spread, the Cybernetists had been responsible for some of the most foul and corrupt practices in politics abusing a position of authority in a weak attempt to ensure that they remained in power.

The Initial story was muddled and had suggested that both parties were to blame.
PI Aiur had ridden this initial wave of outrage well, she had looked serene and approached the manner in a proper scientific manner, there was no emotional ploy to score points no accusations and insults of the Cybernetists. She had explained in a clear even tone how her government had inherited the economy, almost driven to destruction. Explained that the secrecy with which the problem had been dealt with was to avoid mass unrest and needless deaths and economic recession. Instead she had opted for a painful readjustment of the economy that up until now had been blamed on her by her Cybernetist opponents. And just to ensure that the people had understood the severity of the problem she had outlined several sources that had recommended martial law if the news had been leaked.

The initial reaction had been confused, and when the government had provided a full economic account every single economic agency had gone over the data with a fine tooth comb. Several more had asked for additional information and had been provided with it. The conclusion had been near universal, the Biotechnologists had done good, and in the aftermath the Cybernetists found themselves without allies and fighting amongst themselves. And as their party slowly crumbled, PI Aiur's subtle movement of her party to the centre of politics had forced the remnants of the Cybernetist party to the fringes. Her popularity soared and she came to be seen as a Hero.

Her Latest announcement had special significance to the Kation people. She had unveiled two space craft that were under construction at the docks on Nathrasils moon. They were classed as Corsairs and were named Romulus and Remus. In Comparison to the IP fighters the Kations already had these ships were vast, more than double the size. Their purpose was to travel to far off systems, explore them and if they were identified as colonisation targets, build a small military base on the planet. Their military abilities were also a step up from the fighters, although nobody mentioned that there had been a last minute readjustment of the ship specs that had reduced these.

"With these ships we are one step closer to spreading across the universe, let nobody say that we have abandoned our ancestors dreams,"
-Fleet Admiral Arha

OOC: The Third Way is a story unto itself so I haven't talked about it, but its likely that the Biotechnologists will be in power for a while...

Oh Outcomes wise; the Cybernetists have broken into four, two the technologist and federalist impulses have loosely allied themselves with PI Aiur, and are gradually being assimilated into the party. Although politicions that were around at the last government are basically being told that your not getting support...ever.

There are two parties that have struck it alone; a Kation Supremacy league (Aliens are vermin, that type of thing) and a populist party based on the more rightwing side of things (but being populist, lack that scientific credibility that had been with the Kations since ...ever....because you know, they were initially a crashed space ship team...

Also, finally got this written up :|
