Thatcher Revelations

So what make you so confident that you were a Great Power when your leader's "firm hand" could not budge Jimmy Carter.

It could have been worse, thus she is the greatest prime minister ever.
I'm surprised conservatives don't try to use the same logic to rationalize GWB's presidency. Or do we have to wait another 18 years before it will sound plausible to some?

This is Carter the 'Armored Duck' we're talking about here...

Maggie was a hardarsed old battleaxe who handbagged everyone in sight and quite freaked out a lot of politicians from countries that didnt have a tradition of such women. This is not news in any way and does not remotely effect my impression of her.

People had to pay for the utilities they used?! That monster!

Usual strawman. yawn....

It is monstrous that people had to pay a lot extra, just to create the illusion that he private sector could then reduce the price relative to inflation over time.

The point is that people have to pay a lot more. Which is something you should expect when a government privatizes something. In short, the government decided to make most of the people worse off in order to provide welfare to a special interest. Or, to make it shorter, they were ordinary conservatives.

New Year Speech by Czech president. Only book which is fronting. :goodjob:

OK I get it, you hate Margaret. But disgusting is just disgusting.

Interesting...
I express the view that I'm content to let an individual rot, and you say it's disgusting.

But the individual in question was happy to let millions rot...and even brought this situation about.... and you think I'm disgusting.

Consistent, much ?
Myopic is just myopic...

You know what? You fully deserve your current politicians

Why did the rates go up? Were they massively subsidized then the government ran the utilities, but no longer subsidized after privatization?

There were no subsidies, just a low price was all that was required.

Tory policy at that time, run by Tory ministers, was to create lots of profitable privatised companies. Public assets were sold off cheaply, and then the tory ministers later re-appeared as well-paid directors of these newly privatised companies.

Risk taking is normally justified as the rationale for private companies making large profits, but this rationale is hard to justify when public utility monopolies are being transferred to the private sector.

When privatised, the new compaines spent millions on marketing exercises.
There were lots of advertising, the gist of which was captured by some stand-ups of the time. "I see the new electricity adverts, and I feel so good I walk round the house and turn some extra lights and heating on....."

Plundering of public assets for private, and in some cases personal, gain.

But remember Thatcher sold social housing to working class Britons for very low below market price. Arguebly it is a huge transfer of wealth from the state to ordinary individuals and families.

And this is why people cannot get social housing. Nothing to do with Polish plumbers. Indeed the revenue from the house sales was specifically ring-fenced so that it could not be used to build or buy more social housing. Remember she didnt believe there was any such thing as community.

On a personal level I have to say I feel fairly good that my sweet silver haired mothers flat is 1,300% more expensive, but the reason there is no social housing in south Camden is that the council was forced to sell her the flat for a thieves bargain and prohibited from reinvesting the money.

The current situation, the foundation-stone of the BNP, is the legacy of the Iron Lady's petulance.

OMG your blaming the BNPs rise on Thatcher? Are you kidding me? Every left-wing lunatic in the UK blames everything bad that has happend to this country on her. The BNP wasn't even around during Thatcher's years. In any case how does giving working class people their own homes for a cut-price value in anyway create working class resentment and extremism?

Social housing is in short supply? I don't think it is. I thought it was only in private housing that their was such little availiable so prices are very, very high and many people live with their parents till they are 35 because they cannot afford those homes. Private housing is expensive because A) we are a small country therefore land is expensive to buy and build. B)We have a growing population from the third-word in the South-East which drives up demand and pushes up prices C) Government regulations are huge barriars to companies who want to build homes.

There is plenty of decent social housing even non-citizens get fantastic rewards for never paying taxes and having loads of kids.

Final proof you are not living in the UK. The statement that social housing in the UK is not in short supply could not be made by the lower middle class person you claim to be.

You are a double log-in troll.
