In your opinion, what is the best way to deal with logical fallacies when they come up in arguments?

What is the best way to deal with a fallacy when the debate is on an online forum and what is the best way to deal with one when the argument is in person?

How do you deal with a person who is incessantly spewing BS at you every time you pause to take a breath?

What type of response would be the most powerful and effective?

a punch in the face?

You make the assumption that it's possible to convince people something over the internet. This is false.

follow the principle of charity. make their argument valid for them (validity is cheap) and then object to one of their premises.

ridicule

its kind of stupid to debate stuff over the internet because you will most likely never change their mind, so i've kinda realized ridicule is the best way. it doesn't convince the opposition, but its fun. and at the end of the day that's all that matters.

Just scream STRAWMAN STRAWMAN STRAWMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!! :run:

What's worked best for me is to have the fallacy called out by name, along with a wiki entry for the fallacy. It's quick and it allows people to self-improve. I've also seen some noted posters (temporarily) reduce the use of that type of fallacy once it's pointed out to them.

Unfortunately, naming fallacies directly have become cliche and often misused to the point where calling them has become meaningless.

The best thing to do is supply the logic against the fallacy. For example instead of just saying "that's a strawman", it's better to explain why the argument made is irrelevant.

If the person is generally reasonable (Or you don't know much about them, and are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt) then pointing it out plainly and politely is the best option. :)

If they have a history of ignoring this kind of thing, though, and just continuing to use whatever fallacy it is to support their argument, then the second best option is sarcastic mockery. :) While that can be greatly entertaining, it's not very effective at building a sense of community or helping people improve, so it's not exactly the best option, period.

Start flirting with them.

Sexual.

Simply point out the fallacy. And then ignore it until the "spewer" corrects himself.

I think fallacies are like ice ages. They can't be changed - only survived.
