The Capo's Units Thread

Anyone who has seen my threads before (for my mod and for my LHs) would know I like to give a lot of previews. So here is a preview of the Turkish Cavalry along with a painting/etching (?) of a Turkish Cavalry "under-officer" that I based it on. I hope you guys like it.

And thanks achilles, I don't remember putting on a yellow trim but I'll take a look at it again.

EDIT: Just looked at it, you forgot to swap the head too. That's alright, I can fix it.

I fixed it, this is what it was supposed to have looked like. I'll try to post these units tonight along with the Indians and Portuguese. Remember, I said try, so don't hold me to anything.

I just updated the OP with ancient Lusitani Celtiberians (Portugal), Modern Indians, Industrial Turks, and a Turkish Explorer based on Piri Reis. :goodjob:

Good looking stuff. Some of those flags in the pics dont look familiar. Did you make those as well?

No, MadmanOfALeader made them for me and I think he gave them to the CivGold team too, but I'm not sure they'll use them all. If everything goes as planned you'll be able to choose which flag you want to use in my mod, which I think would be a cool feature, so I have at least one (sometimes up to three) alternate flags for each civ. :goodjob:

I was just thinking that having a unified idea of units for the major civs could be a good idea. I just like that idea. Could even kick off a wave of reskinning these units for other civs. I just think that there are a few too many generic units around for civs such as China. China some of the units in ROM still look European in face in the industrial era. Just my thoughts.

Well they must be using old units because there are some outstanding chinese specific units for just about every unit (especially from the HoTK mod for the early ones). Most civs have 10-50+ (germany comes to mind) units that were specifically made for that Civ. Granted not every unit for every civ has been made, hence what the Capo is doing here, but there are plenty of region specific units to fill in those slots till they are made. If you see things like european looking axeman for a east asian civ then they just havent updated thier unit art or dont use current version of the ethnic graphics mods. Check out Veritas delictat's or Diversica's, or LoR's unit roster and you'll see what I mean. And if Capo keeps going at this pace, he'll completely blow all those out the water with the number of diverse unit art with his mod.

To expound upon what achilleszero said a bit; when my mod is finally complete you would be hard-pressed to find units that are shared at all. Certain units will look similar but at closer inspection are not the same, then I'll have certain things like a European War Elephant (there are two types that get shared by about five civs, which is really not that ridiculous especially considering we're talking about a EUROPEAN WAR ELEPHANT), certain scouts and workers are shared, ship styles are shared (I stress styles here) and there are a few units here and there that are shared (Babylon and Sumeria have the same Industrial units for example) but other than that there is hardly any overlap. Basically this thread is an attempt to fill the gaps, I didn't set out just to make units, they all serve a purpose. So pretty much anything you see here either didn't exist, or did exist but wasn't up to par in my mind. So hopefully I can put a huge dent into the non-existing flavored units, although my aim is not to become a unit-maker and I'll probably stop once my mod is finished... although as they say, a modder's work is never done... :mischief:

Very well done, The Capo! I am just asking myself whether I should request an hungarian explorer from you as the explorer is the worst looking unit of Hungary. The only problem is, that I don't know how it could look like... There are two hungarian explorers that come two my mind...

and

Of course, the explorer isn't a great person, but these men might be an inspiration. So, don't know. I guess you have a lot to do, The Capo, anyways. Just mentioned it as this is a really needed unit IMO.

I do not take requests. Sorry.

EDIT: After looking at those images they really aren't all that unique looking so I don't understand why you feel there is a huge need for them. I'd just take the Austrian explorer and replace the head, but as I said I am not going to make it because I am not a unit-maker and don't take requests, I made these for my mod and I figured I'd share them with everyone.

Sorry to hear that. Well, the two don't look unique. But an hungarian explorer wouldn't need to look like those - it's just that they were the only explorers I could think of. Still, the point is, that the default explorer looks bad (for the desired purpose I mean). It's actually a conquistador, not an explorer. That's fine for Portugal and Spain, but not for any other country on earth. Well, anyways, you don't take requests...

Depending on the time-period you want to cover I'd either use Chuggi's explorer (which is a generic Renaissance explorer) or I'd do what I said and take the Austrian Explorer (you could even change the color of his shirt if that makes you feel better) and put a different head on it (perhaps the head from that Hungarian settler).

Okay, I might give it a go. I know Chuggis explorer... hmmm... Couldn't find any austrian explorer. You don't have a link by hand accidently? Or a hint where to search it?

Cool3a2, heres an Austrian explorer, also included an Austrian "pathfinder" (basically an explorer with a musket).
