The Cheapest Generation

Having a car at a such young age isn't all that great. Yeah you think about having your own car as soon as you get your license. Then you realize people around you that don't have constantly nag you about driving them around and borrowing it. Not only that you are likely to be the DD. Besides at that age you can't really own anything other than a hoopdie, unless your parents bought you one...

Oddly enough, I live in a struggling rural area where almost every young person has a car because of necessity.

It is just economic reality. As Arwon said, the same thing is not happening here in Australia, so just wait for the economy to pick and things will become a bit better than before.

Isn't it happening in Australia? I am not sure either way.

machinists still pay a very good wage and could still afford to buy a house. The thing is most kids today have no skills, and want to make 50k a year without doing any hard work.
You really haven't seen the job market have you?
I tried for a machinist job last year. You had to camp out for a week for the line to get an application.

That seems unusual. I don't know much about machinists, but I have seen news reports of people qualified to work in fabrication of equipment were in high demand. The news report specifically focused on one guy who was trying for over a year to find someone qualified for the job.

That's hardly surprising considering they were all out camping

That's in part because employers now wait for the perfect candidate for a job rather than take the many 1000s that could do the job, but were only 95% perfect for it. Employers will no longer train people for any part of the job is many cases. Not if there is any possibility of hiring someone who doesn't require any training.

Really? Find them and give them my email address. I am *always* looking for machinists, and I can never find any. You know anybody who willing to relocate to the great lakes to operate CNC machines, you let me know. I have jobs for them.

I suspect a lot of guys with those skills haven't figured out how to be searchable on the internet. I know of dozens of machine shops with over 10M in revenue that don't even have websites!

Ah, that was the catch, on the job training was guaranteed. Union thing.

Ah, yeah, that would explain the tents.

Of course, if we have slowdowns in home construction and the automotive industry, then we really won't have any jobs for machinists. Those two are kind of the ice that stirs the drink.

Heck, *I* would prob be fired too.
