The Deity Challenge Line-up #25 - Venice's Fool

I'm going with Order, but yeah Artillery is effective, but oh so slow. It wont be as good of a milking as consentient.

No, not directly anyway. It'll reduce the AI's cities' population which does affect the score a bit, but it's nothing you can't fix with some food buildings and/or internal trade routes. You still have 265 turns to play, and in the end most of your cities will probably stop growing anyway.

Autocracy is great for happiness, but Freedom's probably the best choice for Time victories overall because of 1 food specialists. But then again, if you go unhappy, it doesn't matter. So perhaps Autocracy is the better choice here, especially given the abundance of Shaka. ;)

For reference, here's the list of multipliers for each element of the final score:

Cheers for the additional info. I am sure I will have enough Culture to finish Rationalism, Aesthetics AND Piety by T500, though, right?

Yeah, definitely. Puppets don't increase policy costs, right? So at least that's nice about being Venice... And a well-timed World's Fair can be pretty ridiculous with 100+ cities.

Spoiler :
This game is still wacky, as I have no reference point! I'm still wonder-whoring, which is probably a mistake. FP (GE), Sistine (for culture), Ahlambra and Himeji and Red Fort (GE) (firsts on Deity), and LToP. I buy/build a unit every few turns, that may be my downfall that I'm not full out military. The defensive wonders are nice, and keeping the AI from them will definitely help.

No TR now as Red Shaka allied Sidon. I suppose I should run some internals in Korean cities. Running production boats up N.

Was Friendly with white/blue Shaka, and denounced by Teal and real Shaka. Sure enough, white Shaka got killed, then I was denounced by all 3 survivors, eventual DOWs by the other 2. Only one Korea left, and not for long. Red Shaka citadeled me, so I hit him back with one. As he moved a new GG to the front I DOW'd, and have killed 3 more, and even pillaged a citadel across the river by Valetta. I have a decent killing field there. I citadeled some jungle by the river S of Zurich - Impis crossing the river are getting weakened. He will get Rifles at some point, by which I had better have Arty or Gats! Red Shaka has Frigates, but no N coastal towns. He took Kabul with ease, and I puppeted Zurich finally as I didn't want their units hopping into the water, plus I wanted GW help (and now Himeji).

Promos are slow in coming, as is often the case, I get Military Tradition just as a war ends (with Korea). All my CS troops were green, of course. Plus I'm not getting many shots on cities for +4 xp. With only 3 in Honor Red Shaka's Impi weren't unstoppable, but now he has 4 - gulp, as do I. Plus full Trad, Patronage Open, and Rat to Secularism.

Tech-wise, I had planned to bee-line Schools and maybe Radio, but I needed Muskets and decided to try for the lower Mil Wonders. I would like to get Range/Log before Gats, but would love Big Ben. Currently doing Astronomy as Caravels are about. Frigates won't help much currently up N, but need some in Korean puppets. (They have horrible production, smaller one built a damn Caravansary - instead of walls, workshop, etc. 18 freaking turns.) Am thinking of Dynamite path first, to get Brandenburg and Mil Academy. Fert is no help, so may just do Mil Science and then go Sci Theory and Radio.

I am horribly short of workers as I just haven't built any. I have settled 2 GP so far and one GS - I need to get to Industrial soon. Any suggestions on my tech choices?

Oh, yeah, and I had a brain fart with the no razing comment.

They are all working specialists already - I am sending production to my core 3 as my happy is getting near 0. :)

I'm on turn 110 ish. My greed stopped me from growing faster, because HG got sniped 2 turns before I'd get it, and I got invaded by 4 barb units at once, so yeah .... Only got away with ToA, Oracle, Hali and Colossus. Punching in Rationalism now, bought a CS, I think the plan is to turtle up until XCOMs and then blitz

T300 update

OK so the land is mostly mine. Gold reserves total more than all the gold earned in all my other games combined, most likely. Religion has been spread throughout. Tech-ing future techs steadily.

I'm not sure what I can do to improve my score now...?

Score is only about making many cities and growing. But that is necessary only if you want a very high score. And I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a standard speed maps, the time it takes to resolve turns out of 150 cities is stupidly long.

If I need 150 cities to have anything near a high score, maybe I should abandon my attempt and just go take the remaining capitals? I'd hate to play another 200 turns for nothing :(

Can't blame you if you choose to abandon it, Standard/Standard/Time games take really long and aren't particularly exciting in the end either. Last time I played a score game I could barely even load my late game saves... Was pretty interested to see how a Venice Time game would play out though.

Bailed DomV T321 (was aiming for Time but was too bored)

Obviously I could have won 150 turns beforehand, but it was a really fun game nevertheless, and even though the start was the most OP I can imagine, I learned some things from this game.

I'm too jaded from having to give up to post a full write-up with the 20+ screenshots I took (unless anyone is particularly interested), so I'll just post the last one I took after victory.

Most interesting was the fact that I broke my happiness record. Peak happiness was 228, nearly 100 over my India game in DCL #21, which I thought at the time was insurmountable.

Autocracy is all kinds of broken for happiness, and Venice, I will concede, has moved up in my estimations slightly. I still don't think it makes it any easier to win, but the double trade routes is better than I thought it was.

I kind of had the same idea but I knew before I started that 500 turns would be impossible to wait out, so I'll just hope to get enough XCOMs supported by enough nukes to swipe 7 caps as quickly as possible. Is it even possible?

I guess my aspirations were bigger than my patience, in the same way that someone's eyes can be bigger than their stomachs ;)

I have no experience with X-Coms and Nukes for all capitals, but it worked OK for me for the last two, so I see no reason why not. I could have and should have done it a LONG time before.

Still chugging along. At least I am not just hitting next turn with extreme boredom. Coming up, Military Caste and Naval Tradition will unlock a lot of happiness. Nothing can stand for long in the way of 10 to 15 Logistics Artillery.

Spoiler :

So wait, we have:

Spoiler :
4 Shakas - Real, Polish, Portuguese and Shoshone

and 3 Sejongs - Real, Moroccan and Indonesian

Also, Venice are still a bottom-tier civ, no question. But they are really fun to play when you don't get boxed in and killed off quickly

Nice game, consentient!

I am very frustrated with the whole puppet mechanic - I understand one of the drawbacks is not being able to select tiles worked, but... I citadeled up to a city, was able to grab a lux even. Pounded on it, as usual - once captured (now size 5), it grabbed a bunch of good tiles from my 9 pop Valetta, leaving it a whole 5 land tiles. So I reloaded, and set to raze - once it was gone, I lost all the extra tiles from my citadels - 5 to be exact. WTF?
